    Icon3 Travelling to America

I hear that in Medieval 2 you can travel to America. However, to reach America, you need Caravels, which require a naval dockyard. However, it seems impossible to build this because if you look at a city's building browser it says naval dockyards can only be built in castles, and if you see a castle's building browser it says naval dockyards can only be built in cities. What do you need to do in order to voyage to America? Is there a historical event that allows you to travel to the New World?

I got "the world is round" (or something like that) at 1500AD and (playing Spain) was able to build caravels right along, because I had upgraded my shipyard to the maximum in a city already. However, I got the possibility to upgrade it another time and thus could build large carracks (Spanish special, the others get carracks).

Caravel and carracks kann sail to America, and only ships of their level can do that. Every other faction most likely receives similar types of "trans-atlantic" ships.

    SPOILER WARNING

And be prepared for the journey because it takes a lot of time, and you can only land in south america at one point. The upper part. For some tactical advice. Take lots of gunpowder troops with you. Take the carribean and north america first. And use those cities as staging areas for assaults. And take a lot of generals too. If you want to look at the americas before being able to go there use the remove_fow cheat. And fear the aztecs, they are very very very tough. And there are lot and lots and lots of them.

You know, that may not be the truth.
No one knows the truth, and the facts wich lead us to support all the idea that he is italian are weak.
Many people belive he is spanish, some people that he is portuguese, nobody knows, the fact is that he lived in portugal for several years.

And the portuguese king was stupid for refuse his project, twice.

Was he stupid for rejecting it?

    Let's roleplay.

Are you going to fund somebody to take a trip half way across the world, which you still assume to be flat, to find a land that may not exist? :hmmm:

I took a horde of swiss pikemen, experienced musketeers, two monster ribaults, a few units of familigia ducale and a caroccio standard. I only survived two armies before an assault on tenochtitlan gutted my already worn down army. One helluva gaming experience though, really atmospheric in those misty jungles (reminds me of Jurassic park).

In a discovery show I saw it was suggested that Christopher Columbus was from Barcelona and involded in fighting against the Spanish Royalty, but that it was concealed since his plan would never be realize if it was made public knowledge that him and his family(Nobles of Barcelona) fought against the King in the Med like pirats.

WTF is it with you? Everyone should know that Leiv Eiriksson, a norwegian viking discovered America 500 years before Colombus! Is it any point arguing about this when the vikings were first? Jesus Christ....

hahah nice, BUT anyway on topic, be prepared for some intense warriors, they have crap armour so missile units are perfect, but its mainly their numbers that will piss you off :/ any defensive lines seems to just get overwhelmed by sheer number size :c

Who are you talking to? The guy who asked this question initially did so almost 5 years ago, and from the way it looks he never even came back to check on the responses...

Do you guys know that archaeologists have found a sunk greek trirene some miles from the coast of Peru?I'm not saying that they knew where they were going, they could have been draged there by a storm or something...But there's an ancient greek book written by Plato, the famous philosopher,at 5th century B.C. which is called "Timaeos and Kritias" that talks about a distant land at the other side of the Atlantic. In that book Kritias, which is a person, explains how he studied some Egyptian documents kept in a sacred Vault which dated some 9000 years before his time.Concidering that Kritias lived in the 5th century B.C. that makes these documents 11500 years old.In these documents there's a description of a great civilization founded in a continent at the other side of the Atlantic and hosted by a great Empire called "The Atlantis".It is written in these documents that this great Empire was destroyed when the whole continent went underwater during a great cataclysm.
Now guess when the Hebrews place the great cataclysm that they describe in their Old Testamen. Some 11000 years ago...
    Weird ha?
It was that book written by Plato that inspired the myth of the Atlantis when the Europeans redescovered the ancient greek literature during the Enlightement Age.
Now I'm not saying that it is historically true,Plato himself refers to the content of the Egyptian documents as tales lacking historical accuracy.
    But it was THERE!Written.
So we have ancient egyptian stories about a continent at the other side of the Atlantic,we have ancient greek stories,we have an ancient greek trirene sunk on the coasts of South America and we know that the Mayans who where by far the most technologically advanced civilization of S.America were WHITE and TALL!No physicall resemblance to any other pro-colombian native peoples in S.America who where all dark skin and short.Anthropologists say that. It's like they came from somewhere else. It's like descovering an ancient negro tribe in the heart of Europe.
These stuff may be just but man there's definitely somethin there.
All I'm saying is that there's evidence of ancient civilizations travelling crossing the Atlantic or at least knowing of the existance of a continent there.Long before Colombus or the Vikings.
P.S. I havent googled these informations.I read it in decent books. And that book of Plato,I have a copy of it with both the ancient greek text and it's translation. But I'm sure there lots of stuff on the Internet. You just have to discriminate the serious stuff from the usual crap

Irw.. I discovered america first when i bought world atlas..

In my new mod i add Vikings to Norway (Norman faction) and make searoute to north america or make Longboats able to sail thare. Don't know yet. But i have succsessfully enlarged map adding whole scandinavia and Island 50 pixels to north. North american part still missing havent draw it yet. I plan to extend map to west about 50 - 75 pixels. Takes about 4 hours with Gimp 2.0.

So then americans are thare.. 4500 years and Leif Ericson can sail thare. the event counter makes possible to build spetcial longboats for certain time. I will exploit it for this.

Dude, what was the point in reviving a 3 year old thread? This is necroposting, and it's generally frowned upon.
