    Default Cloaca Maxima(RP)

Early one morning, a large band of laborers sets out for the Cloaca Maxima. They make their way down into the sewer. Their task is to clear out any blockages in the drains and to make sure there are no build ups of filth.

    OOC: Price for this please.

    -------------------------------------

Meanwhile, Sextus Julius Iulus makes his way to the home of one of the best known architects and engineers in the city - Vopiscus Marcius Fortunatus. Many joked that the Fortunatii had an architect or engineer in every generation, and had gained their cognomen because very few of their tenement blocks collapsed. While the Fortunatii claimed this was from their great skill and knowledge of engineering, almost everyone else thought it was luck - to the extend that Vopiscus Marcius Fortunatus is often called "Felix" behind his back.

Knowing all this, Sextus still waited at the doors of the man's domus. Someone needed to oversee design and construction of the expanded sewers and streets.

It soon becomes clear the Cloaca could use some additional support beams (or something) to keep the river of flowing smoothly. It will cost 1,500 denarii.

Sextus smiled at the man easily. [color=blue]"Vopiscus! Salve, I am Sextus Julius Iulus, the new Aedile in the Senate. I have come here because you are one of the most renowned architects in Rome, and I have need of your services.

I wish to expand the Cloaca Maxima and design a new drainage system for the streets of Rome which are covered in filth on a daily basis. It is a task that will require great skill.

OOC: Sorry, I choose the name just to throw a humorous element in! A reference to Roman housing, lol.

    -----------------------------------------

The band of laborers are quickly set to fixing the worst of the clogs and the surfaces of the sewer itself. A dirty, stinking job, the men are extremely unhappy with their task. They have to spend hours in the cess, patching up walls, repairing collapsing sides and digging . They are terrified of Sextus returning with an engineer, knowing they will then be set to expanding the Cloaca Maxima. A couple of them had almost drowned in the faster flowing sections, and the men had taken to tying ropes around their waists in order to keep themselves safe while working.

    1'500 Paid!

"It won't be cheap." the man replied. "But it will increase the effluent capacity of the sewer."

Sextus nodded seriously. "What do you think it will cost, Vopiscus?"

"It really depends on how much of Rome you want to do over, Aedile." He responds. "You can expand the Cloaca without disrupting all of the overhead travel fairly easily, but adding new drains and sewers will be a major project just from the interruption of traffic throughout the city."

    ----------------------------
ooc: Vospiscus also means survivor of twins , so maybe Fortunatas has a double meaning here. Although it was a cognomen

"The poorer district's streets are the problem. Sanitation is an important issue in Rome. I believe the little disruption caused by renovating the.poorer streets will do much in the long run. Have you notions of a price?"

"7000 Denarii, Iulus and you will have all of the poorer sections of Rome done." He replies.

Sextus nodded thoughtfully. "And what price for expanding the sewers themselves?"

"You realize the lower parts of Rome are built on a swamp, Sextus? I am not sure how much you would like to enlarge the sewer without compromising some integrity."

    10'200 denarii

    --------

Setting to their tasks with dread, the band of laborers begin the new innovations. Having already cleaned and repaired the Cloaca Maxima, they begin the daunting task of upgrading every single street in the city. Hundreds of stones are lifted and replaced, cambering the streets in such a way that the filth runs into the new gutters set at the sides. The innovative design of Vopiscus costed a fortune, but it was worth it.

Having completed the streets, the bands of workers then set about enlarging the Cloaca Maxima. This was vital to the whole project - the Cloaca Maxima needed more capacity to handle the new streets which would have more sewage flowing into it than ever before.

Sextus was, of course, delighted. The completion of this project would do wonders for Rome.
