Upon his arrival to Massalia, Lucius had already word from Rome, as it spread like wildfire. He was being criticized for his negligence during the last year's tenure as Consul of Rome. He sighs deeply, knowing this all too well. Which was why he came to Gallia Narbonensis, not only to escape the criticism but to renew himself. Here was a land relatively untamed and ready to be nurtured, something that appealed to the Roman. There were a number of Romans already present, but there were also Greeks and Gauls, both of whom the Republic had long term relations and interaction with. He would seek to weave this land into a more abundant and thriving region of his beloved Republic. That way, he may redeem himself in his eyes and that of Rome.

Upon taking up office at the Proconsul's palace in Massalia, Lucius begins sending inquires throughout the area to find a worthy individual to serve as his legatus. He would need such a man to help him with understanding the land and it's customs.

Lucius was reviewing the records of the Proconsulate from his predecessor when an attendant came in with a Roman. He takes a sealed scroll and examines it quietly.
"Titus Druentia Scaevola. You are a native of Picenum, it says here. Recommended from your village's leader too I see. Tell of your family background and your profession, Titus."

"I was a minor military tribune for Marius when he helped repel the Gauls oh, a decade ago now. It was hard work, he worked us all the same, no matter what background we had. However, after Marius , not many Consuls wanted to hire homo novus like myself as legates. My brother is an upstanding equite but he has no Senatorial aspirations, so it is left to me. I am not much of a public speaker or liturgical advocate, so my only hope is to make a name for myself with the legions. " He answers

"Yet would you say you have a profound or workable knowledge of the lands around here; it's people and customs to say the least."
Lucius needed both a man of military standing like the one before him but also one who knew the land of this proconsulate to help him run it.

"We were mainly stationed around Aquaea Sextea and then we got leave to go to Massalia. But I haven't traveled much inland, Proconsul."
Titus replies.
"I was included much in the talks with the local tribes, and we didn't have much trouble with them when I was here."

Lucius smiles, knowing this was the right man. He turns to an attendant.
Get my new Legatus his uniform.
The attendant departs, allowing the Proconsul to get right to business.
Legate, I plan to assimilate the Gauls, Greeks and Romans more closely in these lands. Enough to make Gallia Narbonensis a more prosperous region of the Republic. This untamed land is truly a god sent; plenty of lumber and fields as well as resources to tap into and create a grand potential. To that extent, I would like to speak with the local leaders of the Greek, Gallic and Roman communities within Massalia and the nearby area.
It was the first step, but hopefully the right one.

"Well the Greeks have been here forever, as you know, but that has always been mostly a trading outpost of theirs, and even now Rome has largely controlled this area for a long time. You shouldn't have much trouble there. The local Gauls are used to us too, but I am sure some might want a return to their old ways and customs. And they will get Gauls from farther north who come to trade, so you might have vastly different interests if you have them all at once."
Titus replies.

"Pro-Consul" Claudius said while entering the office he is lead to.
"My brother send me to personally thank you for your support in the latest elections. Without your support he wouldn't have become this years leading consul."
I keep my promises to those I give support to. I will continue to show such support if your brother continues to support me.

"I have no doubt my brother will qontinuesly support you." Claudius quickly says to dismiss the subject.
"I however have a request pro consul. After years of doing nothing and living of my brothers wealth I wish to engage in political endeavors myself. I hoped I could prove myself with you here in Gaul. "
I do not plan for war, Claudius. I plan to build up these lands and make them a thriving province of the Republic. I hope you are ready for desk work and diplomatic overtures.

"It is exactly what I hoped for. War is tiring I fear. Plus I find the flow of wine a little lacking for it to be spectacular. It's a necessary evil I suppose. "
A letter is delivered by a messenger boy carrying the seal of Consul Lepidus.
Salve Pro Consul Regulus,
Let me start with a cen sere thank you for taking up my brother. Perhaps you can learn him some values. However to business.
Recently the senate passed a series of bills that reforms our tax system. One of these bills includes that the pro consulates need to inquire how much their respective provinces can pay yearly. Based on these reports the senate will name a figure which needs to be collected and paid annually. We hope to hear from you soon.
Signed,
Consul Marcus Aemilius Lepidus.
Given the message from the Senate, Lucius sends out the quaestors of the previous proconsul, who had served his predecessor ably, to investigate the yearly tax income of the province for the Senate's records.
