Eventually Quintus is informed that the Proconsul has taken up residence in his offices, and that he is now invited to a meeting.

Metellus Nespos makes his way over to the Proconsul's offices, leaving his servants to continue the investigations of temples.

Carnifex was waiting for him, looking out over the idyllic scenary of Athens. A servant poured wine for two. "Nespos, I hope you enjoyed the sail over?"

Without further pleasantry, Iulus spread a map over the table, nearly spilling the wine. "We have a pirate problem. Crete is overrun. It is high time a pro-Consul took action and burned them out of their rats' nest."

    "Pirates?" Nespos asked.

"I know nothing of pirates, and I will be no help to you on water. I took the land route to Greece."
"If you want to go lead out triremes and biremes to try and rout these pirate scum, I will gladly tend to fiscal and provincial matters on land."

"Agreed, you'll manage the provincial matter - maybe organise some games and drama we can spend the war spoils on. Go to the best entertainers in the city and find out their prices. We'll have a Ludi Romani of our own, here in Macedonia!"

"The tastes of Greeks are not the same tastes of Romans Gauis." Nespos responded.

"No, but Greeks do love their drama and festivals. Besides, there are plenty of Roman citizens in the region. Something that comes from being occupied for years.

And what about you, Nespos? You mentioned something to do with gold and temples?"

"Yes, I was thinking of writing a historiography of the temples here in Greece, so I thought I might scout around and see some of the more famous ones and the artwork they have displayed. Might inspire me to donate something when i return to Rome."

"An excellent idea! Certainly Greece has an interesting history. Her Gods especially so."

Gnaeus pauses to pour more wine, and to munch on a date.

"In terms of public buildings, what are your thoughts. I've been considering a large forum, as big as the matketplaces in Rome perhaps, where we can sell stall locations to merchants in order to raise some coin to spend on the province."

"The Greeks have their agoras, Gnaeus, precursors to our Forums for sure, but you would have to found a new city if you really wanted to install one of those." "There are many poor roads around, that will help both the economy and the military."
"But perhaps you could have a statue put up in your honor. "

"Very well, you're a convincing man, Quintus. I want you to go and talk to the merchants around the Province. Target the larger cities, Athens, Corinth, Thessaloniki and so on. Convince them to donate funds to the improvement of the roads - it'll aid their businesses - and to the campaign to root out the pirates from Crete. Both are in their interests, they shouldn't object too much.

I'd also like you to find out who the richest of them are."

Hearing news that Proconsul Iulus was stuck in Crete, Nespos decides to stay in Greece to make sure the province ran smoothly for another year. He did not deem it necessary to inform Rome of this.

A letter arrives sealed with the seal of Marcus Aemilius Lepidus delivered for the pro-consul Iulus.

    Iulus, friend.

I want to inquire into your business. How fares the province ?

    Signed,
    Marcus Aemilius Lepidus.

Several angry petitions arrive for the governor of the province complaining of thefts and arbitrary actions taken by officials acting under the authority of the governor himself.
