Located within the capital town of the Kingdom of Leinster, Fern Castle was built in 13th century by William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke. It is notable for being near the Ferns Cathedral or the Cathedral Church of St Edan (Aidan). It is also known to the Irish as the Cathedral of Máedóc of Ferns, the patron saint of Ferns. At some point in history, the Mac Murrough took command of the castle and broke away from the English, most likely around the troubling times of John Lackland. Recently, the King of Leinster has bent the knee to an English expedition, making them tributary vassals of England
