Default Processor for old TW titles, such as MTW2 and RTW

Hello there ladies and gents :-)

Does anyone else here struggle to find a cpu that works well for both new and total war titles. The i7 4770 that I have currently, does the job for newer titles (ETW and beyond), but begins to become under-utilised in older titles that are built for single threaded performance (up to, and including MTW2 Kingdoms). Looking at the CPU load in these games reveals a maximum of 35-40% utilisation, meaning I can only attain around 30fps in RTW (Steam version), although MTW2 fairs a little better. Has anyone managed to find a processor that caters for both old and new TW titles? A processor that can be fully utilised by the old, as well as new engines? I've just ugraded to a OC'd 1070, so that shouldn't be an issue....I hope.

    Would appreciate any advice,

    Thank you

That's odd, 30 FPS in absolutely maxed battles? And did you overclock your 4770?
My 3770k @ 4.4ghz is doing just fine. Keep in mind you may need a good cooler, for example a H100i, not entirely sure whether that one would fit or whether you have one already.

Not overclocked, but I can turbo boost it to 3.84GHZ Perhaps I need more? I've got a cooler already installed for the CPU (air cooler). CPU temps are not a problem really (30-40C). By interest, I hear that the steam version of RTW is not so good. Do you run both RTW and MTW2 Kingdoms from disc? Thanks :-)

No for both RTW/M2TW I use exes from gamecopyworld as steam is a huge pain when it comes to mods on RTW/M2TW. I spoke with a high profile RTW modder recently who mentioned that there are huge issues with steam, perhaps deliberate ones, after the update CA released. In any case, I really appreciate that CA made it possible for people who lost their discs but still have their CD key to activate copies on steam.

As for turbo boost, I'd suggest trying to up it if you can however in the future I highly recommend spending the extra however many dollars for the k version. As you will notice a difference in certain games (not all, as it depends on how much the processor is being used), for example a modded skyrim with an extreme amount of scripted mods had 10-15 FPS less without my overclock. Normally in the future you won't need to buy a new CPU for 5 years~ as things have really, really, really, slowed down in terms of gaming. There's a 5FPS increase at most over the past years, mine is running just fine (thanks to the overclock in part perhaps) - so I'd experience a much larger FPS increase upgrading my graphics cards even if there is no need at present. Perhaps when volta comes around and I have some reason.

Appreciate the advice z3n. Down the line, and if other factors allow (motherboard, psu), I'll probably try and upgrade to the 6700k ,as its meant to have good single thread performance. For now, I've disabled hyperthreading, which seems to have helped and have purhased a disc copy. Hope you're well :-)
