Gaius poured himself a glass of wine and went to the garden in the center of his house, taking a seat in the midst of one of his small rose bushes. He waited for his son to join him.

Gnaeus Julius Iulus arrives to speak to the Praetor.

He is welcomed into the villa and the Praetor soon greets him. "What can I do for you, Iulus?"

"A legal matter, Sulpicianus. A Military Quaester can serve outwith Rome in the capacity of a Legate, can't he?"

[Pontifex Maximus]

"He may be negligent in his duties as quaestor." Gaius mused "It is not something I would have done, personally."

[The Mad Skylord]

Gnaeus nodded thoughtfully. "Perhaps, and had circumstance been different I would not have appointed him so quickly. But Rome is threatened by this menace. My argument in his defence will be the fact he is a Military Quaester, and he oversaw the finances of the Legions while he served with them. A strong enough argument for the courts, Praetor?"

[Pontifex Maximus]

"In this period of upheaval I doubt that many will challenge it." Gaius concluded. "We have never faced a conflict quite like this one before, we need our most talented men in positions of importance, and we could not have foreseen this war."

"Agreed. I wish you luck in this most troubling time. I am glad to know that Rome is in the hands of two good men while the Consuls are absent. Farewell, Gaius, and thank you for your advice."

Lucius Cornelius Scipio A. pays a visit to Sulpicianus.

The Praetor welcomes the man into his house, where a slave serves him with a glass of wine. "Welcome." he said with a smile "I do not think we have met before?"

"Oh, we surely have, Sulpicianus"

Said L.C.S.A., with a warm smile. He was already a grown man, already in his forties.

"The front brought troubling news, so many fine Romans died in the hands of our treacherous socii"

He added, trying to begin a proper conversation.

"I thought, perhaps, that this war would be costly. This war is essentially a war against ourselves. The Italians have copied our methods and style of fighting, and many of them are veterans of our own wars. We will play a high price in blood to defeat them and maintain the status quo." Gaius added

[Oznerol]

"A bloody price, none less"

Said the senator.

"I feel we should rather sign a peace and try to sway them with words, for swords they fear not even an ounce. However, it should be done without comprosing the name of the Res Publica and its most honorable Senate"

[Pontifex Maximus]

"I personally do not see how we can give the Italians increased rights without declaring the war lost." Sulpicianus said with a heavy sigh

"Maybe just a single victory is required. Just another battle and the Senate could sign the peace without covering us in shame"

Said Lucius.

"Still, it would require something remarkable for the Italians to seek peace, the full citizenship even. I still hope that the consuls will manage to completely defeat them in battle soon enough"

"If we appeared to be winning the war, then it would be much more liekly to be receptive in the Senate, I think." Gaius replied. "If you had a law already drafted for such an occurrence...then it might be successful."
