ROUGEMONT CASTLE, SEAT OF THE DUKE OF EXETERBuilt within the Roman wall of Exeter itself by William the Conqueror, this castle of blood-coloured stone has seen better days, but is still a prominent obstacle for any would be attacker. Its prime location within the city walls allow the Duke of Exeter to exert a good deal of authority upon the city, despite it being officially independent from its rule. It has served as the headquarters of the Holland family since their rise to prominence, and it is from here that the Holland estates are administered by the current Duke, Henry Holland. While it is the official seat of the Duke due to its strategic location, it is by no means his favoured castle, resulting in its defences being largely neglected.
The Holland estates were once the greatest in England, although the divided inheritance of the last Earl of Kent robbed the Hollands of their formerly far-reaching influence. The family does still however hold bountiful estates in Devonshire, Kent, Huntingdonshire and Lancashire, making the Duke of Exeter one of the more prominent nobles of England. The Holland family is, for the moment, declared for Lancaster, partly due to the familial connection between Henry Holland and King Henry VI of Lancaster.
