    Regional Bonuses

    Lincolnshire:

    • Lincoln Cathedral: The tallest building in England and indeed the known world at this time, this magnificent house of God is also famed as a pilgrimage site for Saint Hugh of Lincoln (one of the kingdom's best known saints) and the burial site of the viscera of Eleanor of Castile, Edward I's beloved wife, whose funeral procession started in Lincoln. Naturally the Bishop of Lincoln can count himself one of the more powerful clerics in England. +10% income, +1 Charisma, +1 levy and taxation rolls. Characters may also seek refuge within the Cathedral for up to 1 in-game year and, unless permitted by the Bishop of Lincoln, anyone who would do harm unto them on its consecrated ground will certainly have to face some consequences at the Church's hands.
    • The People of Lincoln: Lincoln was devastated by Viking raids in Saxon times, but gradually recovered and boomed after the construction of Lincoln Cathedral and had become one of England's wealthiest towns by 1150 thanks to the cloth & wool trade. It began to decline at the dawn of the 15th century due to plague and flooding, but even so its remaining people will do their utmost to defend what they still have should an army come to their gates. d2*d1000 Militia (75% Militia Longbows, 25% Militia Footmen) will spawn when the city comes under attack unless its people happen to actually like the attacker more than its present controller and are confident that they won't sack the place upon victory.

Boru fall to his knees before the Bishop, possibly the only Priest in England not to have taken a side. "You Excellency, I am humbled by your presence. I wish to confess unto you my sins."r

"Rise, man, I'm not the Christ." Philip ordered. Normally he would have extended his signet ring to be kissed, but such a showing was bound to land him in some trouble if word got to the right ears. "I shall hear your sins, my son, provided that you are prepared to confess them. Christ's promise is absolution. Speak." Philip placed his stole around his shoulders, preparing to hear the man's confession.

Boru arose quietly, seeking to act as humble as possible. "Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned. I have commited fornication, slain my fellow man, I have led men to their deaths. I have lusted after my father's title. Even at this very moment I feel a desire for great power..."

Philip scowled. "I see." he said after hearing the confession. "These are grievous sins, my son. Life is sacred, and the waste of life is not easily forgiven." A solemn silence prevailed during this period. "I believe God may be willing to forgive you, but the cost is great..." he trailed off awaiting a response.

"Then you must repent of your wickedness." he replied coolly. "You shall wear the hair shirt of repentance and sleep on the bare ground for three days. Your head shall not be covered and you must remain exposed to the elements. Reflect upon your past actions and how to escape vice and the machinations of the evildoers."

    "I shall, My Excellency.

There is one other matter, Excellency, I wish to be re-christened. I am an Englishman, but my father gave me the name of a filthy pagan Gael. I wish to see England rule over the entirety of the Island of Ireland. It is her right."

"The Irish walk in the path of Christ." the bishop replied. "They are good christians, although backwards in some respects. If you wish to renew your faith through baptism and be known by another name to the heavenly kingdom above, I will baptise you."

His Eminence is welcomed into Lincoln and taken directly to the Bishop's palace located to the east of the Cathedral. The apartments are walled, but small.

the Bishop rose, folding his hands. A ring was on each finger. "Your Eminence, thank you for arriving so swiftly. I have a matter which I mean to discuss with you." he motioned to the door when once opened, led to a well lit sitting room adjoined by the library. It overlooked Steep Hill street, a cobbled road winding up the hill to Lincoln castle. Several ornately carved chairs stood there. The bishop took one. "This fighting in the Realm is uncomely, but probably necessary. Eventually once enough blood has been spilled it will come to an end. When it does, we must do our part to redirect military action against enemies that matter."

Francis followed the bishop finally taking a seat facing the window, he enjoyed the fresh air and the pleasant view. Francis spoke in a calm and gentle voice.

I'd like to hear more Lord Bishop, what do you have in mind

It is my understanding that you wish to remain neutral in this fight

"I care not who ascends the throne provided he is a man of god." Repington replied, "I wish only that not too much English blood is spilled. We must focus our efforts on the common foe, the Saracen."

Ideally Lord Bishop, Jerusalem should be in Christian hands but Europe is too divided and even if England were to be at her greatest strength it would not be enough to defeat the multitude of the Saracen forces. We must look to strengthening the Church in England

Francis stood up and began to pace

This war has divided the nation, uncertainty is behind almost every door. The people require leadership and it is our duty to provide it. We shall guide and shape the future of England ensuring the church's rights and creating policies which include the Will of God

The Bishop gave a derisive laugh. "The will of God." he repeated. How often the will of god happened to be that which the clergy willed. "What will this new order look like, Your Eminence? One in which I shall be able to control the Count of Lincoln? Would that it could be so..." his voice trailed off. "The truth of the matter is, examining historical trends, we exert less and less influence over secular authorities. We must reverse this trend."
