To pass the time, I thought it might be worth asking the fans and devs, youtubers what faction they intend to play. Please note that through more later updates the mod will be updated with new stuff.
I also want to know what your fav factions are, and what hopes and dreams you have for the mod. This would be a good discussion area so we can forget about the 30th as it arrives. I want to bring that discussion way back in the RII forums when it was first announced. Let's give it that hype, but well deserved hype. The Medieval Kingdoms have had theirs for sure, so why not AE?
So for devs, your hopes, your dreams, what can be done and what can't.
So for fans, your hopes, your dreams and what you want to see being added
So for youtubers, what are your hopes and dreams for this mod, and does it remind you of playing the old RTW mods?
So I might do it this way:
The Original Rome Total War way:
Play on Rome as very hard, defeat Macedon, defeat Carthage and conquer the Gallic Tribes. And then go to expand across the Selecuids until I meet the Parthians. Germania is one area which I def want to conquer. The thing I like about Rome is their massive amount of legions, something the other factions don't have. They will all be transported to the Coliseum!
Or if I ordered it:
1)Rome
2)Parthia
3)Macedon
4)Selecuids.
I'll prob go with Rome first, easy to play and the most fun faction to be with it. I just like Rome, and the city and stuff.
For the mod, I want it like others to be released on 30th and it will, because the amount of work this mod team has done is comparable to the way RTW 1 Mod teams have worked, and especially DEI. So they deserve a hearty congratulations on release. I also have a dream that someone makes a Sassaind Satrap playable mod. Just add in the Sassanids would be awesome. Where I can see this mod going:
- Focusing on mini campaigns based on Rome and Parthia after 100 ad
- Focusing on Marcomanni Wars - this hasn't been done yet and in future updates would be nice
- Adding a whole bunch of new stuff and just keep working on it guys
- And finally maybe in the future someone figures out how to implement maps into the campaign map.
You all remember when you first saw this image:

What it didn't turn out to be. I mean DEI was awesome, and that's what makes it worth playing, except the meager medium sized cities. I mean I've tried to come playing like that as depicted i the screenshot but the way Ambush battles are set up means it puts you right in the middle of the action, giving you no time to set those 'super alpha' screenshots where the Romans defend. It's all damn scripted and things are hardcoded. So I'll try as the Suebi to be careful, but I'd just love to take three legions and re-enact that Teutoberg Forest. These are my thoughts, and RII well I'm not sure. AE is the one mod that perhaps can bring back a lot of total war players. RII is def improved, the environments are good, but the cities don't work for me. Only Rome and a few Egyptian cities are worth it, but like ABH, I consider Doomon's Alexandria and Carthage much better than the RII versions. If historical battle maps are figured out to be imported from RII to Attila in a future patch, this would be so worth it.
One of the things I've noticed is that Attila has improved sieges but they're medium sized, for most cities. Only who knows when Doomon's maps will make it. In the mean time to get a proper ambush battle you're gonna have to pit yourself to the deepest forest. Because playing with vanilla most battles you get are mountain, or ones which don't have much forest. Look for the battles that have two mountains where you're going to get the most action. There is also some flat forest ones, but they're not that great. Now why would I be telling you about my vanilla exp, well its because UM's centurion mod has made me played the Attila vanilla game once again. Seriously it is so immersive that its even better than the Attila UI itself and the time period obviously for us players is the Ancient World. There's no shortage of great environments with Attila for land battles, but the only problems are fighting next to Attila buildings instead of RII ones. The campaign map for AE will obviously feature imported maps, and will retain some vanilla. But don't let that distract you, because I played a mod which put the RII factions in, and although you can ignore the cities timeframe for the time being, the environments in which to fight are simply awesome. Check out the screenshot thread if you can. There's also another annoying problem with Hordes I've noticed. They continuously run away and don't fight leading to frustrating times but I think that's with the way CA developed the AI since its a horde attacking game so to say and it is a remake of the old RTW 1 Barbarian invasion, albeit a very good one. So why vanilla, well AE on release will be different from it, but playing through AE's UI mod, it gives you a certain exp of what may come.
I'll have you note that the wonder models on the campaign map are not playable. So even if you played near Harlicansuss, it won't appear on the battle map as you had in RII. Bam Citadel might, but not the others. This is one thing I don't like that they removed from RII. So how do I know this, by watching a video from Total War Zone displaying the events. So while that isn't great, not much can be done about it. One of the things about the mod is that Petellius mentioned that everything will come, but on release it will be a full version, albeit more good stuff will be added in so that's worth taking a note about. If you want great screenshots for Barbarian factions, fight in the mountains which have seriously impressive landscapes. Egypt however doesn't have that good of a environment as it had during its RII phase, still looks awesome. Africa is much more forested, North Africa if we take it into account. I've not fought Spain in vanilla, but in RII Vanilla it was the most barebones environments you could have fought in. So....boring were they that it wasn't that great to fight. The best battlefields are:
AE Battlefields:
Germania - has a good variety of forests
Balkans and upper Germania - excellent variety of forests/mountains
Greece - Mountains and passes
Rome and Gaul - the most natural ways of fighting and has good forests
Parthia - has the most natural environments and great for battles.
I'd avoid Denmark because that's not in the time frame anyway, and I think Scythia's ok but it depends on what you like and how you will do it. So all the good stuff is there, its just that more stuff will be added and they'll keeping working on the mod so there's no hurry. I mean the wait has been worth it. It has. Seriously in 2015 I wasn't expecting that much progress would be made. Now its all up to CA whether they'll release that nefarious patch or they're always swamped up in Warhammer. So lets give it that proper release it deserves on the 30th so they can notice this mod and give it as a award winner. Would be nice with winning that we remind them that we need a simple patch to convert battle maps into the campaign. After all didn't they acknowledge DEI for RII in a facebook post? And if there's a modding summit next year in 2017 Jan, make sure the modders tell them that we need that patch!! I want to see Doomon's Alexandria on the campaign map just like everyone else.
Again, just my thoughts, and would like to hear your thoughts, dreams, aspirations. A bit of indepth discussion could also clear out what kind of goal we expect for the mod. All the important work is being done for the release, so in the mean time let's share our thoughts as to how we want this mod to succeed, to get that damn patch and be awesome as it is!
One thing though, I really would like the square formation being put back for the Romans(it makes epic screenshots).
