Casper Frozenfist, previously of House Royce, entered the common hall at Castle Black and filled his trencher with stew with bits of pork, carrot, and onion. A mug of greasy beer was added to the meal. It was a poorer meal than normal today, but at least it was hot. Casper had been training in the yard earlier and now sought to rest and recover his strength.

Benedict sat within his office, reading ravens from across the whole of Westeros. There was word of Andals, foreign raiders from across the sea, who strike ever deeper into the Riverlands. Recent news brought forth word of Jon Stark's death and the elevation of his son, Rickard, to King in the North. Rumblings came of Andals now on the eastern shore of the North. So much was going on. He was grateful that he wasn't in the Riverlands with what was going on there. He takes another letter, examining its contents before being handed some papers to sign; most of them involving assignments to the other strongholds and some much needed promotions that were awaiting his approval.

Leobald Glover entered the common hall of Castle Black, and wasted no time in getting himself some food. A lengthy but uneventful patrol at the top of the Wall, from where he could see nothing but the hardy grasses, shrubs and pines that could grow beyond the Wall, had sapped his vitality, dulled his wits and left him cold beneath his furs. Upon filling his trencher with a stew of pork, goat and peas and seizing some beer to wash everything down with afterwards, he didn't even wait to sit down before tearing into his meal. By the time he dropped himself near where Casper Frozenfist was seated, the trencher was already half-empty, as was his mug.

"Glover." Casper said by way of greeting. "See anything amusing on the wall?" He bit into a butt of black bread and chewed heavily, slopping up the remainder of the stew with the other half.

"Saw a bird drop a big one on Hallis from the Shadow Tower while we were making our rounds. Right on his head, and he had just taken his hood off too," Leobald chortled between bites of stewed mutton. "He would've killed it in his rage, except he was the worst shot in our entire patrol and wasted two arrows on thin air instead. Besides that, no. It's been a quiet day. And you, Frozenfist? Met anyone who could fight worth a damn on the training grounds?"

When Benedict came by, Leobald rose from his seat in respect. "Lord Commander," he said with a nod.

They will eventually learn to fight... or at least they can be extra meat if we ever go over the Wall for long.

The Night's Watch would find ways to live beyond the Wall, even if it meant looking to the weaker of their lot as food.
Casper gave a low, rasping laugh. "Has not come to that for many years, and even then it was a far ranging. Next time we range up the frozen shore best to take a brother who knows how to catch fish from the icy lakes and sea."

"THe he can fletch two more." Frozenfist replied with a low laugh. He lifted his trencher to his mouth and slurped down the rest of it. "Truly vile today." It was salty enough as to never turn. "Broke in a few of the new lads in the yard, most of them aren't worth their weight in piss but they will be whipped into shape eventually. It's coming up on my turn to lead a ranging, might take some of them along if its an easy assignment."

"Good luck," Leobald remarked grimly after finishing the last of his stew. He didn't envy Frozenfist in that regard one bit. Somebody had to do it, he supposed - regardless of the skills or at least the capacity to learn that they had displayed in training, unless their only job was to clean the latrines new recruits had to eventually earn some field experience in order to become useful - but he was keenly aware that just as being any young and inexperienced warrior's first sparring partner had its risks, that didn't mean the senior brother holding their hand through their first real trial would be safe, nor were they immune to the consequences of their charges' mistakes. "In my experience, newly-minted fools on their first Ranging are more of a danger to the men who're supposed to be watching over them than the enemy. I can deal with a Wildling any day, but having to yell directions at a green boy who's like to piss himself with fear in his first real fight all at the same time always complicates things."

That's if their head is thick enough to crack open that ing thick ice. And even then, the fish would sure be encased in ice.

Benedict grabs a piece of bread and bites into it. He always wondered why they never sent recruits first beyond the Wall. That would show which are the best at survival and which weren't suited for the Night's Watch quickly.

"A few good ranging will do me well. The commander of the Shadow Tower is unwell, he'll need replacing soon enough. Might be a ranger could rise high there, the right ranger." He gave a yellow grin "And if the wildlings carry away a few pock-marked youths what concern is it of mine? Stand and fight, or the others take you I say. Might discourage the rest from trying to flee north once they see who the true enemy is."

"I'm headed out on rangings soon, any preference as to where? Perhaps a place less travelled, less watched. It's been too quiet of late."

The hall continued to eat and drink even as the Lord Commander strolled in. He walks over, grabbing himself a trencher of the stew that had been made along with a mug of beer. Benedict strolls over and sits at his usual table, dining quietly for now. He had had enough of raven messages and signing documents. Had been awhile since a good flogging had happened since most now dared not to slack in their work, even if it was the same thing over and over again.

Frozenfist stood out of respect as the Lord Commander joined them "My Lord." the man said in greeting "The new lads are coming along well, thought few of them have ever held a sword before."
