East beyond the lower end of the Last River lies a thickly alpine land with hills and gorges cloven with metal and snow. It rises up high above the sea and shows only grey walls to the summer-traveler, while the winter-traveler should be wary for the eastern seas will smash you against these Grey Cliffs. A secret path, then, drives deep into this lofty domain, a fjord they call the Grey Sound, at the end of which one will find the well-guarded settlement of Karlon's Hold, or Karhold as its folk are wont to call it.
The lands around Karhold are known for their wealth in copper, tin, and timber, but naught much else. The Karstarks have taken to hanging aloft banners of bright suns and decorating posts with solar shapes, for here the land is dark underneath the thick forests and towering cliffs and hills. In wintry years, there is little light at all, and so the Karstarks have taken up the rare sun as a symbol of power and hope. They're known, however, as sullen, dark-haired men, built large and hirsute with lofty shoulders and cold eyes.

The steward is welcomed at Karhold; the servants and guards let him into the longhall of the lord, and let him stand by the hearth in the middle of floor while he waits. After a short bit of respite, three dark-haired youths appear at the other end of the small hall. Two young men, and one young lady, the latter taking a seat in the chieftain's wooden throne. A great woven banner of a white sun hung above them, clearly new. The elder of the boys stood by the lady's side, and on further inspection, they were clearly twins, while the younger of the brothers watched from farther away.
"Welcome to Karlon's hold," the Karstark daughter called across the hall which was otherwise quiet in this morning except for the crackling fire of the hearth.
Yoren bowed. "Thank you me lady." he replied "I am come as Steward but also as diplomat. We seek trade with Karhold, but we also seek to gain information about the invaders in your lands. The King is troubled by the news."
"Murderers and beggars from across the sea," she nearly hissed, making a point of showing nothing but absolute hatred for them.
"That is where the lord is now," she explained to the man from Winterfell, "Our brother is fighting the invader."
The Karstark girl shifted in her seat. Her brother seemed to glance at her, seemingly familiar with her demeanor.
"We assume you seek the copper and tin of the grey cliffs." Greatest supply of bronze in all the North..

Helisa had dark brown hair that was currently tied up into a large bun. She shifted her gaze a little and made a bored expression.
"The king will recall that part of prince Karlon's tasks was to protect the mines of the Grey Cliffs. We cannot of course deny the king his source of copper and tin."
She leaned forward a little, restlessly.
"Is there something the king would like to offer in return, for our loyalty?"
