Default Winterfell, the Seat of the King of Winter

    Winterfell

    Description

Winterfell ruled by the Kings of Winter was a structure of special significance. It was among the most impressive strongholds of the North though was little more than a motte and bailey constructed of wood with perhaps several towers of pile stone. The First Tower, the largest of the stone structures, was surrounded by the graves of loyal men killed in service to the King. Beneath the sprawling quarters, halls, and wooden constructions lay the ancient crypts of Winterfell, in which all the Starks were buried. The crypts furthest to the back were the only occupied cells, with room for expansion in either direction with careful excavation. The godswood lies within the protective walls of the stronghold with its pools of earth-warmed water.

House Stark, the Kings in the North

    Rickard Stark

    King of the North

    Aged 24 years
    Traits: +2 Battles, +2 Duels, +2 Survival

Rickard Stark is the eldest surviving son of King Jon Stark. Rickard's childhood and adolescence was filled with training in the yard and studying the arts of war. He had always considered his future as being one of service to his older brother, the heir to the throne at Winterfell. He has devoted precious little of his time to any courtly politics or training in etiquette, as little as there might be at the court of the King of Winter. As such Rickard presents as one well versed in the arts of war but rather ignorant of politics. He holds his family in the highest of respect and has a great deal of love for him immediate family. Rickard, like the rest of his siblings, is the son of a union between his father Jon Stark and Lady Aliana Bolton, the aunt of Lady Cerenna Bolton of the Dreadfort.

    Equipment
Bronze Scale Armor: (+20 hp, +1 Battles, +6 Survival, +5 post-battle condition rolls)
Ice (Bastard sword equivalent): (+4 Duels, +4 Survival)

    Children and Family
    Gelther Snow: 1

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Name: Errold Stark
    Age: 49
Marital Status: Married to Maege Cerwyn
Children: Jorelle (4) and Jon (1)
    Traits (11 points): +3 Duel, +2 Survival, +3 Battles, +2 Charisma, +2 Pathfinger

If one could what loyalty looked like, House Stark could easily say Errold. Errold was the younger brother of the late King, Jon Stark, and an uncle to his brother's many children. Wherever Jon went, Errold followed him, not as a dog to its master, but as a brother watching his kin. It is said that Errold and Jon were always on good terms, never once arguing save when they drank too much and hurled fists to see who could crack the other's skull open. All the while laughing as they taunted each other and threw good punches to see who could best who. As the years went on, Errold remained in good standings, becoming Jon Stark's right hand and favored commander when the banners were called and the war drums were heard.

The brother of the King hoped to die before Jon's time so that he may never witness his own brother's death. Yet, in the end, Errold witnessed Jon's death. The Stark, full of rage, cut down as many as he could, hoping to somehow save Jon's life and bring him back to Winterfell. The King knew his time was up and gave his final word before passing away. It was Errold who rode to Winterfell, bloodied and torn. It was Errold who laid the crown of the Kings of Winter before Rickard, his nephew. It was Errold who was the first to offer his sword and proclaim Rickard, the King in the North. Even with the passing of his brother, the Stark knew there was still a King in the North to serve. For it was his duty to protect Rickard and serve him just as he did for Jon, his brother.

The Stark is known as a stubborn man and prone to drinking heavily when in the mood. Yet he is well-known for being a strong warrior and capable commander, having served Jon Stark diligently. He is loyal to his household and family, hoping to serve Rickard just as he did for Jon.
    -------------------------------------------------------------
    THEON STARK

Brother of Rickard Stark, King of Winter
Known to some as "The Quiet Wolf"

    AGE: 23

    TRAITS:
    +3 battles
    +2 duels
    +1 survival

The third and final son of King Jon Stark, Theon was never expected to hold any responsibility of his own, save perhaps with lifelong service to the Nights Watch. However, since the untimely demise of his eldest brother, he became more committed to his remaining family than ever, something which has only increased thanks to the death of his father. Since his youth, he has been often mocked for his quiet, solemn, and serious nature, which is accentuated even further by the characteristically sombre Stark countenance. Nonetheless he is slow to anger, and his precocious patience allows him to silently observe a situation and then offer good counsel when it is needed.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Lilith Stark

    The Winter Rose

    Aged 19 years

    Traits: Survival +3, Charisma +2

Lilith is the only surviving daughter of Jon Stark, and Princess of Winterfell. As such, she has become an attractive prospect for marriage being the only eligible Stark woman. In her late teens she is reaching the end of her prime marriageable years and will need to make a decision soon, guided by her king of course. Her personality is dark, more akin to her brother Theon than Rickard. She has always given herself over to queer pursuits and studies, such as that of old magic and herb lore.

Rickard sat grim faced on the throne, his surviving siblings beside him. His shield bearer, Donnel Greystark, was on the dais as well dressed as if for battle. Lilith wore a simple black dress and dark gems alongside her amber necklace, indicating she was in mourning. Rickard wore his bronze scale armor, though in place of wearing a helm he wore the crown. The vice-seneschel called the court to order speaking in a clear, booming voice "Silence for the King!" Soon the murmurings died down and Rickard stood.

"My Lords, the grievous news from my Uncle has left me grief-stricken, but not paralyzed. I must avenge the death of my father and brother. I have been trained to use my sword and shield, but not as much in the command of large armies. I will rely on many of you for your wisdom in the coming war. Which of you now will follow me to war?"

Theon stood adjacent to his brother, clad in bronze armour and grey furs. He had begun to come to terms with the death of his brother and father, but his face was more drawn and solemn than it had ever been previously. Silently, his icy gaze studied the lords assembled before them, all who had pledged their fealty to Rickard as King of Winter on that fateful night in Winterfell's great hall. As his brother stood, Theon stepped forward, and nodded as he met his gaze.
"I am your brother, now and always. I'll follow you into war, from this day until my last."

    ---

Dustin, having slightly recovered from his hangover, stepped forward before the throne, and answered the King's question with a characteristic bellow.
"I mean to keep my promise. Cape Kraken will be ours, and Bear Island too! Those Ironborn will never set foot on Northern land again, if they want to keep their heads... And cocks."

Lady Cerenna sits with both hands on her lap. Her pink, spotted dress is lined with white fur.

"The Dreadfort shall follow you, there is nothing we would like more than taking revenge on those raiders"

Her bright eyes studied everyone on the hall.

"I shall call my banners as soon we conclude this meeting"

The Dreadfort commanded as many men as Karhold and Winterfell, and Lady Bolton had more shieldbearers at her service than anyone else in the North. Her levies were numerous and even if ill-equipped, they could be certainly powerful. If Stark wanted to wage war against the Ironborn he would need House Bolton, and its vassals.

"I cannot and will not leave my kinsmen on their own. I will not rest until my good uncle is avenged"

    -----------------------------

Lord Cedrik had slept like a trunk the whole night. He now attends the setting, as one of Stark's most experienced and closest bannermen. The old Cerwyn wears a furry cloak, his pot-belly covered by soft leather. The axe hung from the belt.

"Aye, my King. We lost quite a few men in the ambush, but more can be conscripted, sire. House Cerwyn will always follow you; we are 'honed and ready'"

He said, mocking his own motto.

"We must kick out those filthy raiders from the Bear Island and Cape Kraken, as Lord Dustin says!"

Beron stood among the other Stark sworn swords and assembled lords. The leather patch covering the old man at arms right eye made him look especially grimm. He listened to the young king in silence and when he finished Beron spoke up, "I followed your father and I will follow you. My sword is yours King Rickard."

Jeor chukles muttering to his brother, "don't look so grim Brandon, we are going to get a chance to kick those Iron Born from the shores."

Brandon just shakes his head and watches grimmly. His brother was reckless he would get himself hurt if he wasn't careful.

Since the day before, Errold had remained quiet. All knew that the two brothers, Jon and Errold, were close; they looked out for each other and never lost the bond they shared by blood. It was Jon who raised Errold to be a shieldbearer. It was Jon who molded Errold into a trusted companion and commander. It was Jon who secured the marriage from Lord Cerwyn so that Errold could be a father one day. Everything Jon did for Errold was not forgotten, but would remain unpaid. So the older Stark would do his best to serve Rickard as repayment to his brother for what he had done for him. Still the retainer of now his crowned nephew remained quiet, listening to all who spoke.

The Lord of the Wolfswood sat among the assembled Northern lords, having changed out of his battered armor to dark clothes and furs. Nothing remained in Galbart's mourning attire to signify his headship of the Glovers, save a wooden brooch shaped like the mailed fist of his house. He did not hesitate to join those lords who had already risen to announce their intent to join King Rickard's anti-Ironborn campaign, adding his voice to the chorus of support.

"Your father died in my lands, fighting the Ironborn who have brought nothing but death and misery in chains unto my subjects and all others who live along the northern shores of our Kingdom with their incessant raiding ever since they overran Bear Island. The very least House Glover can do to respect his memory would be to march at your side as you move to punish those accursed pirates, Your Grace."

Rickard's gaze turned to Beron Mormont. "Beron you are a fine warrior and have long served House Stark faithfully. I would name you the Captain of the Guard in Winterfell - duties more fit for you than training men and boys in the yard, I think. Your sons shall accompany me on the war path, but you shall remain as my castellan in Winterfell to safeguard my Household and my sister."

He turned to Errold Stark and Lord Cerywn "I name you both Captains of my host, to counsel me and keep the men in good discipline."

    "Lord Dustin...step forward."

"Greystark stands with you." barked Harrion Greystark, opting for his usual minimal use of words, delivered with his deep and guttural voice.

Lord Cerwyn, arms crossed over his ample chest smiled to his son-in-law, glad of receiving such an honor from his Grace.

Ah, the lad is smarter than I presumed. He did the right thing appointing us. Who else could command the host? No-one! I wonder what is he going to tell Dustin.

Errold hears his name being stated as a captain of the host alongside Cerwyn. The uncle of the King bows to his nephew, grateful to see that Rickard was quick to utilizing him.

Beron nods slowly, "No one will take Winterfell while I command here." he had filed King Jon and he would not fail now. Not again.

Jeor smiles, "I will gladly march with you to send those Iron bastards from our shores once and for all."

Brandon just nods slowly at the King's words. He would be marching with the rest it seemed.

Lord Ryswell and his eldest were present at the impromptu war council and listened as the new young King delivered duties and prepared for the incoming conflict.

"Lord Dustin, for you I resurrect the ancient title of Master of Horse, held vacant for hundreds of years. While my House and many among us here have not seen much use for horses other than to get us to the battle line faster, that old tradition must be reverse now. The Kingdom has grown vast. Each house shall supply 50 horse riders to you (taken from their militia points). And you shall be their sole commander. I command you to harry the Ironborn but never engage them in pitched battle. In addition to this duty you shall report to use of their movements. You may name a second to your command from among the lords and warriors gathered here." It seemed the best strategy to delegate tasks. Each man would be responsible for his own part of the war and Rickard would direct them.

"Lord Greystark. You shall have the honor of commanding the vanguard." Rickard barked. "It shall be its own column, and its strength shall be 1,000 men. If the Wolf's Den cannot provide all the necessary manpower, then we shall draw manpower from elsewheres."

    To Dustin and Cerwyn:

"You shall each command a column of 1,000 men apiece, and harry the Ironborn on their southern border, deny them the aid of their pirate friends on their longboats." Rickard pointed to them "To you is appointed another great task, perhaps the key to our victory. In order to attack Cape Kraken we must pass through the fetid marshlands along the coast. We should ask the Marsh King's permission to cross his lands lest the blasted frog eaters harry us."

"All the ships must be levied." Rickard concluded. "But not all should be used in ferrying our men if the Crannogmen prove unhelpful. We shall keep half to the defense of the coast from raiders from Bear Island." There. We can defend the coast with ships too, not just men.

Boasted the old man. He liked to brat about his martial expertise, but truth be told he was actually a fearsome warrior and a diligent commander.

"We have to cross the frogmen's lands... Certainly, we couldn't march into Cape Kraken otherwise. But the Marsh King could be hard to convince... and even harder to find. We could just cross the waters between the lands of Dustin and those in hands of the Ironborn"

"So, I understand I shall ride by your side, doesn't it, cousin?"

Said Lady Bolton. She was known to lead her men in battle, as any lord would do.

"I also suggest we should claim the Bear Island. It has been a thord on our side for far too long. If we get rid of that pirate's nest our Northern coast would be easier to defend against the Ironborn's depredations. And I am sure my cousin Glover would be delighted of erasing that menace on his very doorstep"
