PC is freezing when running MTW2

This happened twice, I could play for an hour, perhaps even two. First time I alt tabbed to check some stuff online, after a few minutes, it froze my computer completely. Second time, I was in-game and the game itself became unresponsive all of sudden. Third time again I was out of the game and the computer froze. From what I saw I can play enough time before it happens, but it is bad for the computer to go around rebooting all the time bruptly like that, no?

I was running SS 6.4 on Steam. I don't know if the problem is SS or vanilla, therefore I post here. I haven't played vanilla either in a very long time, I had another PC and hardware, so it could be any, I installed both together and went directly for SS.

Medieval 2 has always been a fairly resource-heavy game. If you've got other programs (web browsers) running in the background, there's always a chance of a crash or freeze. I remember experiencing freezes exactly like you mention (both the game being unresponsive and the computer freezing) many years ago (at least 5 years ago), but since I bought my new laptop PC, I've never had the same issue, so I put it down to hardware.

So I would recommend avoiding running background programs, and avoiding Alt + Tabbing. Instead, maybe exit the game and relaunch. See if the problem reoccurs.

It might be worth going through all the regular troubleshooting, too. Check for driver updates, etc.

I'll try that and report back, but I'm fairly sure that it isn't that since my older PC was even weaker, and this PC I can play even heavier stuff, like Attila or Rome II etc, even alt tab out of it, keep Firefox running with 600+ tabs open (yes, I'm insane like that, I keep opening stuff "to read sometime" until the browser becomes horribly messy then I simply restart all over again, I need therapy lol). As for the time you were having problems, were you running SS as well?

I should add that I found out some resources on the map are wrongly named, Salt is being called Tobacco for example. I described better at a thread I initiated on Stainless Steel forum:

It froze the PC again, this time in-game, I have not alt-tabbed out or had anything else running.

It's possible I was playing SS back in the day, or at least KGCM, but I don't recall if either mod was more or less unstable than vanilla.

~~Are you playing a disc version of M2TW, or Steam?~~ I see from your other thread that you are using Steam.

The resources thing is a bit odd. There are only 20 or so resource slots allowed by the game, so some were renamed for the Kingdoms campaigns (Tobacco and Chocolate appeared in the Americas campaign). A simple text edit, but, if that is occurring in your SS game, it hints to me that perhaps something went wrong during the installation of the game and/or SS.

Do you have/play the Kingdoms campaigns?

In any case, it might be a good idea to reinstall.

I did reinstall and in four hours it didn't freeze anymore, seems fixed. I disabled UAC this time.

Also the resources bug remain, it is unrelated but happens to all SS on Steam as I found an older thread about that.

Could you open the CFG file in the Stainless Steel folder (use Notepad) and copy it's content here? Maybe some configuration tweaking will help.
And tell us your desktop resolution.
