CTD when starting campaign game

Maybe I missed an earlier thread offering a solution to this problem, but my computer is crashing to the desktop within one minute of attempting to play a campaign game. I can play historical, random, and custom battles but I can't play the campaign mode. My computer has an Athlon 64 3700 processor; Radeon x850 xt card; and two 512mb sticks of OCZ Gold pc4200 dual channel memory, so it's more than capable of handling the game. If anybody has any suggestions I'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It just seems to happen randomly to a few people. And no, the patch doesn't fix it. The only option that works for me is playing it in another computer (no, I don't want to do a full system reinstall in my main PC just to play M2TW and possibly find it didn't make a difference)
