8800GTX requirements

I didn't want to upgrade my computer, and I certainly didn't want to buy a new one, but then ME2TW comes out....

I currently have a ATI X1800XT 512 and me2tw struggles to say the least, I have terrible frame rates (13-25 during battles) and lots of stuttering during battles, so I now have my hopes set on a Nvidia 8800GTX.

Question is... is it compatible with my current computer or do I need a new computer and if so what will I be needing in a new computer cpu-wise?

My current spec is... amd 64 4000 2.4ghz, 2 gb ddr ram and win xp pro.

also how much does the 8800 GTX cost in the UK as it doesnt say on the nvidia web site, only in dollars.

I will not be going with ATI again simply because they constantly out date their cards within a month and even then they are still not upto scratch, so I figured I would give Nvidia a shot. Oh and the fact that they joined forces with AMD doesn't rest well with me.

im having a feeling your problems are residing somewhere else, that 1800xt should be fine for this game.

And unless you plan on upgrading that processor to a duel core a 8800gtx will end up bottlenecked by the cpu. Not saying hte processors bad , but you will never utalise the power of a 8800 with it.

They cost about £450, your better off buying a duelcore cpu and gettign a 7000 series card if you really need to upgrade it.

Ive had problems with duel core processors in the past and so will try my best to avoid them at all cost. The reason for wanting a 8800 GTX is that it supports dx10, a 7000 series card does not.

£450.00 is just out of my price range at the moment anyways so I guess I'll have to wait a while longer. Oh and your right... the 1800xt should be able to run this game... but it doesn't - it struggles at best... and im getting more angry about it every day... you say the problem could reside somewhere else... any ideas... cos im stumped?

i dont have a clue whats causign your problems, but i wouldn't buy a 8800 just because it supports dx 10, you want to wait till they start bringing out the lower end models like a 8600GT or somethign that will cost a hell of a lot less. Plus vista isn't even out yet so dx10 is not relevant for a while, i don't think that we will see much of dx 10's potential till second quater next year.

I don't understand why you want to avoid duelcores, they are phasing out single core cpu's. The only problems that peopel have with them is old software that get confused by the duel core structure, most new games are optimised for duelcore now and if your building a high end rig thats what it should be for.

I have one question how much ram have you got?

Like Doono said, your system should run M2TW just fine and maxed out... I think your problem lies elsewhere, have you got all latest drivers? Are you running programs in the background? Is your powersupply decent? Also you might want to try formatting, gets rid of most problems

I for example still have a NC 64 3200+ (@2.3), 1gb ram, and a 7600gt and run everything on max except for shadows and bloom with a decent fps. Try cleaning up, or look for other malfunctioning hardware before spending money..

Also, does your mainboard support PCI-E? (EDIT|: nvm, just realised no AGP 1800xt exists)

Theres not need to upgrade your specs are a lot better then me and i can play 5000 men on all high with no shadows on AMD XP 3000,1024mb,Geforce 7600GT AGP

are you running alot of background programs like anit-virus, anti-spyware, etc.? Also, you should probably go through your background processes and get rid of all unnecessary ones, they are probably just dangerous for your system anyways.
