Default Re: Harrenhal, Seat of House Whent

Torrents of rain fell upon the blackened stones of Harrenhal, scarred forever by the dragon fires of Balerion the Black Dread. Its halls had been the resting place of Hoare, Qoherys, Harroway, Strong, Towers and Lothson. Now their ghostly wails were joined with the many who fell in battle defending the keep from the besieging Frey forces and who marched to aid their allies, Bracken and Blackwood, in their fight against the invading Lord Frey. All events had brought nothing but misfortune to House Whent, who stood out in the rain as thunder roared overhead, unrelenting and without ceasing.

The courtyard was filled with soldiers, of House Whent, her vassals and House Frey. The former Lord Robert, whose belligerent actions had brought shame to Harrenhal, sat in chains before his victorious foes and his son, Duncan, who sat within the traditional seat of House Whent, that had been brought out from the main keep for the newly raised Lord of Harrenhal, Harren the Young Lord. Harren's cousin and regent, Roger, showing not a single emotion upon his face, gazed at his idiot uncle who had only dragged their house through the mud. The Whents were only fortunate that Robert was to be the one punished and that the rest of their household was to be left alone. The Whents were to keep Harrenhal in exchanged for Robert's abdication and to be sent to the Wall as punishment. Roger kept his gaze upon his uncle; his younger cousins not within sight of the proceedings and kept within the main keep, away from what was happening. Without a single goodbye, the regent waved his hand, indicating that the Frey troops may take his disgraced kinsman away from his sight. He was done looking at Robert, done trying to figure out why he stood against Frey and Tully. Why he had gotten his own house involved in this war that was clearly one-sided from the start. And what the future held for House Whent and the young lord.

Roger was only grateful that, with the war over, the Frey's occupation of this castle would end soon and he could begin rebuilding his cousin's lands and home which had suffered so much due to Robert's alliances and ambitions. The Whents would need friends in light of this conflict and only time would tell if the alliance with Blackwood was still worth anything or not. As Regent of Harrenhal, Roger would see Whents and his family's keep rise to greatest, no matter what the costs.

A few days after the removal of Robert Whent to the Wall, Roger would be surveying the painstaking task being conducted outside the ruined keep of Harrenhal. The Freys had left some memoirs of their siege behind such as cut timber for ladders, tents, forgotten trinkets, fire pits and the occasional weapon or two. Attended by two sworn swords of House Whent, the Regent gazes out at the area before the keep that was once teeming with soldiers carrying the banners of House Frey and their vassals, both new and old. The male sighs quietly, knowing that there was now an even greater task ahead; the future of House Whent and of the young lord, Harren. They needed to reaffirm ties with their vassals, assuring them of House Whent's strength and prestige. New allies needed to be drawn up besides their alliance with Blackwood which was surely unpopular by this point. Roger would not speak openly of this matter however, knowing one of the Blackwoods still lived here and tended to her son, Harren.

Ellyn Blackwood had seen much sorrow in her life. Her Father was dead, one of her brothers was dead, her husband was dead. And now another brother would take the black along with her grandfather-in-law. Along with the oppressive attitude of harrenhall itself, this caused Ellyn to have a much more of a sour disposition. The sole light in her life recently had been her children who she worried for greatly. Her family had stayed at harrenhall during the war, but now they where gone, along with old Lord Whent. Now a cousin, Ser Roger ruled as regent. She knew little of this man, and was concerned about the future as Ser Roger held the future of her children are in his hands. So she went to speak with him.
"Ser Roger, i must ask do you have any plans? I am concerned for the future of my children."

Roger looks out at Gods Eye which could be seen from any tower of Harrenhal, no matter how ruined it was. The lands surrounding this large lake all swore oaths of fealty to House Whent and Harrenhal as a result. The lake was both a limitation and a blessing; for, despite the war, House Whent still controlled these lands. Yet these was as far as their influence extended. And who knows what neighboring keeps, sworn to his young cousin, would think of the Whents now. Hopefully Roger would know soon enough.

Plans will take time, Lady Blackwood, but the first and foremost is to rebuild. We must reaffirm our ties with our vassals, seek new allies and ensure the Whents have advantageous marriages through Lord Harren and his sisters.

There were only two notable alliances at this moment; House Lannister through Lord Robert's sister, Myranda and House Blackwood, which was slightly defunct given the death of Arthur Whent, but still remained true due to the fact that his son, a Blackwood-Whent offspring was to rule Harrenhal in short time. Roger glances once more at the cleaning up around Harrenhal's grounds before moving away from the rampart and beginning his descent down behind the ruined walls. Guards would snap to attention, bowing to the Regent and Lady Blackwood as they passed.

Perhaps even seek to rebuild the towers, one by one, and aim to rebuild Harrenhal altogether. She is a mighty castle, but she needs a remodel. A restoration, which hopefully, comes during the reign of Harren.

Many topics were covered during their discussion, and Ellyn tried to give her opinion on each of them.
On the topic of the children Ellyn says "I understand the need for alliances, but they are still young children, Harren is only nine. Betrothal's would be good however. My sister has informed me that my family seeks to do much the same".
On the topic of vassal houses, "i do believe house Vance will be quite eager for vengeance against the frey's and tully's after recent events."
On topic of harrenhall, "It is a enormous cost to simply maintain the fortress, let alone rebuild it, yet i see the wisdom in the idea."

Roger pauses for a moment to look at Lady Blackwood. The mention of vengeance was something the concerned him.

There will be no vengeance, Lady Blackwood. We cannot hope to survive in our own home with the Freys as powerful as they are. Revenge drove us to war last time and look at what happened; we are lucky enough to still be holding these lands. I will not risk the Whents with vengeance and Harren will learn the same principles. We must be patient and careful with our plans. As long as we can prevent ourselves from be swallowed by the tide, we can survive and thrive again.

The regent had seen the war first hand as he commanded troops on behalf of his uncle, Lord Robert. And it was these experiences that drove Roger to denounce vengeance against either Frey or Tully. They needed to preserve their own strength and build upon it. Garner favors, gain new allies, ensure that Harren Whent and his sisters had advantageous marriages that could ensure the continuation of House Whent's control over Harrenhal. Roger looks up at one of the ruined towers of their keep.

Its bad enough that the curse of Harrenhal still exists, Lady Blackwood. We cannot risk his Lordship's life nor that of his sisters over vengeance. Let us never discuss that topic again.

Ellyn was caught off guard by his response. "Ser, i think you misunderstand i am not calling for revenge, i know the cost of revenge and war quite well.
I am saying the that House Vance will be upset as Wayfarers rest has been stripped from their family, in violation of traditional customs. The Frey's will now be even more emboldened as their greed and avarice knows no end. In addition my sister has informed me that there has been much trouble in the capitol. As such I doubt the Tully's peace last long."

The Vances will still seek vengeance, Lady Blackwood. We cannot risk those emotions and intentions to turn to vengeance. For now, we must appease the vassals and help them change their focus inward.

Roger would continue to walk, moving into the main keep, passing servants that were cleaning up the corridors and changing up the scenery of Harrenhal. It appeared that they were preparing to entertain guests.

I plan to call a meeting of the vassals and see who shows up, determining who is loyal to House Whent still.

OOC- I think I forgot to elaborate on the "cousin" ties or what have you. Lord Whents sister, who was unnamed really because when we started it was a Lore tie and me and Oz Whent with it (get it ) was married to Warrick, Myles and Axel's dad, and their mother lol. So Harren would be our first cousin. Which one went to the wall again? And the one that went to Riverrun? Initially I went for the oldest sister of Harren.

Ser Myles Tully arrives after the dust had settled but emotions were still ever on high. 50 guards at his back, they walked slowly to Harrenhall and when they got to the gate Myles hopped off of his horse. "I request audience with Lord Harren and his advisors. I wish to talk about the future. Me and my men also wouldn't say no to a meal and drink." Myles announced politely at the gate.

OOC: Robert Whent, Harren's grandfather, went to the Wall. The one with the Tullys is.. Lysa? I think.

The gate would open, permitting the Tully party to enter. They were shown to an open barracks where they would be lodged. A meal, with what was available, was prepared and given to the guests while they awaited word for the Regent. Eventually, somewhere around the mid-afternoon, a guard comes to Ser Myles, stating that the Regent of Harrenhal, Roger Whent, may speak with him along the southern ramparts. The guard shows Myles the way, where he finds Roger once more gazing out at Gods Eye.

"Regent Roger, " Myles stood next to him gazing out on the water. They called him the Smiling Trout because that was his demeanor and personality. He could only temper it.
"I am truly sorry for how things have gone. Gods know I did not want things to go this way. My own Grand Father... Things shouldn't have happened as they did." Myles looked far in the distance. His voice somber and sincere.

Its Ser Roger. I don't like the formal title of Regent, but I had to take up the position in order to safeguard House Whent.

Truth be told, he wasn't sure what Lord Robert's old retainers thought of this move, but he believed they would trust a Whent leading the regency more so than a Blackwood.

Don't give me honeyed words, Tully. Your kin refused to stop Frey from the beginning and thus, Lord Robert was forced to abdicate. I am only thankful that Whent banners still fly over this keep.

When word of Vance's forced removal had reached his ears, many within the halls of House Whent made a great, and negative, commotion.

Why should I trust your apology is sincere or not? Why should House Whent trust such words?

Myles looked at the ground and back at the horizon. "Not honeyed. He is every bit of my blood as he is Harrens. I've marched to war with him. It pained me. PAINED me to send him to the wall like that." Myles hit the wall. " the wall. I wish, I wish he would have come to me first. If he would have come to me none of this would have happened." Myles turned to Robert. He looked around and whispered, "I would have told him what was happening, why, and the reasons! There was a reason we were idle." Myles pleaded. The Smiling Trout was no longer smiling. "All I've asked, all my brother has asked, is for loyalty, for trust. But no lord, none, has even looked to Tully before mobilizing and doing what they thought best for the Riverlands. Everyone going about their way, waging war, being careless." Myles looked to the horizon again. "I had to make some decisions. But it was a time for hard decisions. But it is over. Now it's over. Peace is restored and if anyone, that included Frey, breaks that peace the gods wouldn't be able to save them. It is tenuous however, we need to come together now more than ever. I would open my hand and seal that claim with my blood if I had to. Let us be united again."

OOC: Its Roger lol. Robert was the one sent to the Wall.

Roger doesn't show a change in his emotion despite the rousing words said by Myles. If Tully had wanted such trust, then why did they continuously favor the Freys over the rest of their vassals? Everything had gone to Frey... Red Fork, Wayfarer's Rest, Oldstones, and so forth. All that could have been rewarded to vassals who would owe much to Riverrun's generosity was in the hands of the Twin's Lord and his sons. Ser Whent glances at Myles.

Trust is something hard to acquire as far as the situation of the Riverlands goes, Ser Tully. There is nothing you can give as assurance to gain the trust of other lords around you.

The regent turns his gaze fully away from Ser Tully to look at him more directly.

The Riverlands have been shaken by war, time and time again. As I said, loyalty is something to be earned and, with this recent conflict, there are those who are unsure of House Tully. House Whent needs to know what can do Tully do for Harrenhal so that we know that the loyalty given to Riverrun is truly worth our oath? With what happened to Vances, I have my reasons to ask this question.

Ooc- damnit! Lol and Red Fork went to Blackwood to smooth things over.

Aye. Vance and Wayfarers rest" Myles said looking into Rogers eyes pained. "On the one hand, they are the only vassal House in all of this to follow their Lord through in through. On the other, they are the only ones that did not clearly see it as a fools errand to do so. The others let it lay well enough alone. On the other, they have displayed the kind of loyalty that only House Whent did when the Lannisters attacked our flanks. Just loyalty. Not expecting reward. But a decision had to be made. Loyalty to Tully had to be the message. With Frey seeking another appointment, and evidently my families only ally, I was deadlocked into another decision. Other Lords aren't happy either. They want Vance to be reinstated and I don't see that I can just take it all back. Again, loyalty to House Tully and piece had to be the message." Myles rubbed his face taxed. "If House Whent would have just come to me before launching against Frey we would not be here. I do not blame you for questioning. There has been a lot of that. If it had come earlier, perhaps I would still have your Houses trust. I still trust House Whent." Myles said quietly. "But I still share Whent blood. I will help make some reparations and help House Whent retool. On my honor, and on my blood."

Reparations and retooling... it was a start, granted, but it seemed small to Roger. As Harren was a cousin to House Tully, surely they would give more to their blood, but it seems that was a wasted effort to ask for anything more. For now, the Regent of Harrenhal would take the words of Myles Tully. If there was any treachery, he would make sure Myles was the first to choke on his promise. Ser Whent remained quiet before speaking any further.

If that is all you can offer House Whent, then it will be accepted. Its a start to rebuilding trust nonetheless and will surely please Harren when he learns that his Tully kin are looking out for him.

"It may not be all." Myles said softly. "Give us time, I will make it right Roger. Harren is to rule Harrenhall. He is my cousin. I'll be damned by all the gods if anything gets in the way of that. I would renew House Whent and Tully ties by marriage if I could. I allowed House Blackwood Red and Blue Fork. Noremund is an honorable man by my estimation." Myles squinted for a second, "The grand scheme of things has just been greater than some see. Some think House Tully to be enthralled by Frey," Myles stepped a bit closer "but it is not so."

Roger is good at hiding his emotions, but grits his teeth beneath his lips. House Blackwood, one of the causes of this recent series of conflicts, was awarded territory?! It was sure nice to hear that Lady Blackwood's family expanded whereas House Whent was left with Robert's sentence to the Wall and a regency with an uncertain future. Ser Whent would make sure that Harrenhal gained something out of this and at some point.

Actions are stronger than words, Ser Tully. Show House Whent the truth of your words and you can be assured of our loyalty to Riverrun.

"It's a two way street." Myles said offering the small knife and an outstretched blooded hand.
