Default Wayfarer's Rest, Seat of Lothar Frey

    Wayfarer's Rest

Wayfarer's Rest was stripped from Vance control due to their participation in a rebellion against House Tully and aided by Houses Bracken, Whent, and Blackwood. Lordship was transferred to Lord Lothar Frey at the conclusion of that war after the rebel armies had been driven from the field and their castles taken.

The Frey host some 15,000 strong arrives at Wayfarer's Rest. Edwyn remained behind at Stonehedge but Walder and Lothar went together. They parked their massive army outside the gates of the small keep and demanded that Lord Vance come forward.

A party of fifty riders arrived at Wayfarer's Rest. They carried the banner of House Piper

They are invited within the small keep and brought before Lothar Frey "Thank you for coming, Elyas." Lothar began. "We have some matters to discuss, I think, with the war concluded."

The war was indeed concluded but Piper was not satisfied by the result

"Greetings, Lord Frey." Elyas said with fake courtesy "I thought I would discuss that with your father, the other Lord Frey."

"My father is..." He didn't know what to say. "The sieges have left him weak. He is bringing up blood with his coughing fits now and is not well. But what business we have can be concluded between us." he replied. "The original agreement was to secure oaths of fealty from Houses Brackan and Blackwood and to transfer the vassalage of Wayfarer's Rest to House Piper. Tully has foiled those plans with his ill times meddling." A large chest was brought forth. "While I am the Lord of Wayfarer's Rest our swords will always be yours to call." he promised. "We would also make a gift of reparations paid by the King on behalf of the defeated parties. You will find 50,000 gold dragons in that chest. It is my hope that the alliance between our two houses may continue."

"I am glad not to be the only one weakened by this war. Tell your father I hope he gets better, he has lived through much just to be killed by sitting outside a castle for a long time."

Elyas heard Lothar's talk of reparations and interrupted him

"Lord Frey, House Piper has spent over 125,000 golden dragons in the war effort. 50,000 is not even half of that. It is an insulting amount, if I am allowed to speak honestly."

"It is a full third of the sum House Frey received, and we provided that proportion of the troops under arms. If the sum is insulting, then it is Tully who insults you by refusing to make the bastards who dragged this war out pay for the cost of it. I suggest petitioning him for the difference. I assure you, our expenses were not covered either." Lothar was growing annoyed. Elyas had been an ally but now he forgot himself. Are there no loyal lords left in the Riverlands? "I point out that I didn't have to give you anything of the sum paid to House Frey. You were wholly absent from peace negotiations and left no instructions as to your wishes. You wished the vassalage of Wayfarer's Rest, you have it in all but name. You were also gifted money, money not part of the original deal and money you did not have to negotiate for."

"It has been a truly costly victory if all we've gotten out if it are 150,000 miserly golden dragons and this keep, Lord Frey. Specially considering that Houses Whent and Blackwood remain unpunished."

The war had left Elyas bitter. 4 years of his life spent in battlefields and siege camps and all he got were a handful of coins.

"I don't blame you, Lothar, or your family. But Lord Tully is a fool if he thinks this is a fair deal." Piper said "This hasn't solved anything. This isn't peace, this is a short term truce."

"I agree." Lothar said with a serpentine grin. "But if the Tullys think they have bought peace they are sorely mistaken. And the next time our interests are threatened, our enemies will find far more troops arrayed against them than they did in years past. Blackwood has been set up by Tully as a power to oppose us, that much is clear. Why else give the entire House the incomes of the Trident? It is a blatant betrayal by Tully. It always was. It seems to me that our two Houses could benefit far more by controlling those lands and their incomes. Blackwood must be removed."

Removed. What a choice of words

"I agree. This new Lord Blackwood is quite a threat and must be dealt with. What kind of image is the Riverlands projecting when Houses as sedicious as Blackwood's are given lands and titles without any merit?"

"Tully grasps for support. He will find that thw harser he tries to hold on, the more will slip through his fingers. Myles and Brynden could have chosen to support us, but the chose a gambit. They try to keep our enemies on equal footing with us. It is folly." Lothar tapped the sword at his waist "if it comes to war again, Tully will find himself outmatched."

"Will he? The Blackfish lords the lands that belonged to Bracken and Blackwood was granted the rents of the Trident. They have built a strong position."

"That they have, in appearances only. TUlly is now on an island, and he lacks support. Most of the Houses in the Riverlands have cause to dislike their actions. Even the Whents and Blackwoods will despise them, and Bracken as well.." Lothar added "Those half measures will not gain them much favor. "

And how many despise House Frey and Piper?

"We have spoken too much of this, let's talk about brighter news. Your sister is pregnant again, House Frey and Piper will have a new member in the close future."

"This is wonderful news!" Lothar replied excitedly. He had just recently become a father himself. "The Piper line is secure and growing then, it is fortuitous."

"There can never be enough Freys, right?"

    Elyas chuckled.
