Missing executable and installation crash

Thread: Missing executable and installation crash

Default Missing executable and installation crash

I've downloaded various EC 2.2b files today from various sources. Each has had a missing executable and each has been described by 7 Zip as having a CRC error.

It has been suggested that anti-virus programmes may be causing this problem, though they have never been a problem during many previous iterations.

The link to the missing executable posted for me by Quintus earlier today downloaded fine, and I moved this into the unzipped bin folder and started installation. The installer informs me there is one error in one bin.

The installation has repeatedly crashed during the unpacking of the dugunthiz early normal texture file, which the installer reports as a corrupt file.

The PC is very new, and I have run all the tests you would expect to ensure it is not the PC that is creating corrupted files.

I see others have had a problem with downloads today. I am asking for suggestions.

It's exactly the same file that's been distributed by torrent; I've no idea why it wouldn't be working when the other has been fine.

I have no doubt the installer is working fine. The install is proceeding smoothly to around 75 per cent when it asks me to abort because the texture file mentioned above is corrupt.

All I can suggest is trying the torrent version - as I said no one's reported any issues with it (that includes me on my other machine).

Small update and errata: the repaired folder created by WinRAR is only 5.3Go big, and WinRAR does not detect the installer when it does its repair attempt. So I bet you that the installer is so unrecognisable that WinRAR never notices it. Also I'd like to amend my previous post above my saying:

the repair attempt DOES NOT mention any errors in the folder. However, when you then attempt to extract/copy the new repaired folder, only THEN does the message pop up about a Checksum error in the final Z bin file, with a message saying that file Z is corrupt, and the EB2.2b folder is corrupt.

I'm hypothesising that it is something to do with the download process, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to know if there are other reasons for that.

Unfortunately I've never tried torrent. Heck, I didn't even know what torrent DID until I read about the stuff like "seeding", in the announcement thread I'll certainly keep that option in mind, though I'll first like to persevere a bit longer in the other versions, at least for another day, before jumping into a completely new (to me) download program.

So I've had the same sort of problem. I'll just post here all that I know, and maybe that'll help people work out what works or not. I'll preface this by saying that my computer skills are severely lacking.

My laptop is a Toshiba make, running Windows 7, with a Core duo (2) intel processor. It's almost 10 years old, which probably doesn't help. I use Bit-Defender Antivirus, which I partially disabled on one of the download attempts below, but this changed nothing in the results.

I downloaded the file over the wifi, which is shared with the rest of the people in the house. Download speed is variable depending on what other people are doing.

Once downloaded (via google chrome), the .zip folder had a size of 5 986 923 ko. This is the same for both the folder from moddb, and from EB FTP.

Trying to open the folder via windows explorer gives a "this folder is not valid" message, and it fails to open.

Trying to open the folder via 7zip gives a "the folder cannot be open as an archive" message, and it fails to open (attempting to extract it provides the same message).

Trying to open the folder in WinRAR gives a "unexpected end of of archive" message, BUT I am able to access its contents, where I see every single bin file from a to z, except for the installer.exe.
--->Attempting to then copy or extract the files gives a "this folder is corrupt" message, and fails to extract/copy.
--->Attempting to repair the folder contents shows an error in the final bin file (the one with the letter Z), and this Z.bin file is not carried over (or not visible) to the new repaired .zip folder that is produced from the Repair command.
------> Attempting to then extract/copy the contents of the repaired folder gives the message "this folder is corrupt".

In any case, the installer in the .zip file was hidden or invisible, and I could not see it.

I easily downloaded the installer provided by QuintusSertorius, and extracted it with no problems.

I had no problem with downloading, extracting, and installing EB2.2 last weekend.

Maybe its a size problem? It's so big that my computer cannot handle it? I shall attempt tomorrow to directly plug in my computer to our modem, to see if the wifi download is problem, maybe try Mozilla Firefox, instead of Chrome.

I'll keep people updated on the other things I try, in case other people have the same problem.

I have a new PC and I hadn't got round to installing BitTorrent. I did today and the download and installation of EB2.2b went like clockwork.

Torrent is very quick and easy to download and install and there is a free version. After that it is just a question of clicking the Torrent download link on page one and off it goes. Nothing to be afraid of. You have to accept it is a little slower and not ideal if you are champing at the bit to get slashing. It would have been far quicker though than mucking about for hours yesterday.

Better still, it adds to the pool of seeds for other players, making downloads for those to come later quicker. Good luck.

Awww, but I was looking forward to spending hours trying to work out the problem!

Well, since you've had a positive result with the Torrent version, I bit the bullet and got one of those torrent programs. It worked perfectly, and the installation went just as planned. So yeah, torrent version: good. other versions: not so good.

It looks like I'll probably never know what was wrong with those downloadable versions, but hey: now I can actually play the game now.

Thanks for the help (you to Quintus).
