Default In search of lost Dragons

Arthur rode for days, stopping only to sleep at night, until he arrived at Oldtown. He was careful not to leave any traces and tried to be as discreet as he could. He did not want to draw unwanted attention

It was not as if he hadn't had experience in stealth, he had been Master of Whispers for several years, even if he had been a poor one, he had learnt about the trade.

He made his way to the Citadel disguised as a merchant, interested in adquiring an apprentice who had some grasp of mathematics. He asked around to be pointed towards someone familiarized with the recent arrivals to the Maester's home

He is taken to a small office where, eventually, he is met by a serving Maester.

"I'm told you seek an apprentice," said the man as he sat down, "We don't send out half-trained young men into the world before their time."

Arthur nodded as he heard the old man speak

"No, but the apprentices are not forced to finish their studies. If I am correct, they are allowed to leave the Citadel whenever they want, if they feel like it."

Had he started with the wrong foot?

"But I am not here to antagonize you or your colleagues, Maester. I am sure we can find a way for this to be benefitial for us both. After all, educated young men are worth a lot in my line of business."

"and in mine." said the Maester, his eyes narrowing slightly, "Why should I allow you to steal away one of my initiates?"

Arthur quietly took out a bag and put it on the table.

"Because there's 25,000 dragons in that purse to be yours."

The man gently opened the top of the purse, taking a coin and testing it with his teeth.

"I have some who might be best advised that a Maester's life is not for them."

Apparently even men sworn to a life of scholarly service had their price. The man had already began entertaining fantasies of using his knowledge and experience to start a business with this bag of coin.

Arthur did not know how to feel about bribing a Maester. He had done it for his Prince yes, but it just didn't feel right. He blowed those thoughts away and focused on the task at hand

"I am looking for recent arrivals, kids who have not grown accustomed to this kind of life yet. Between 10 and 15 years old. Younger than that and they are children, older and they are already men."

The Maester motioned for Arthur to wait, and left for a time, leaving him alone in the bare room. He returned some time, perhaps half an hour, later.

"I have reviewed our records, there are seven initiates of that age group who have been here less than a year," said the Maester, "All but two are from Oldtown. One came here from Dorne, the other from King's Landing. You are better with one of the latter two, easier for them to leave without so many questions."

"Nothing out of the ordinary in your records?"

Without expecting an answer he got up

"I'd like to see the boys myself, if you don't mind."

"Very well..." said the man, taking Arthur to one of the many libraries that the Citadel held. From afar he pointed out a group of four young men.

"The two on the left," he said, "The one closest is from King's Landing, the one beyond him is from Dorne. I dare not introduce you, lest I draw suspicion upon myself, but there they are."

It was very clear that neither were Rhaegar.

OoC: Is it fair to say that Arthur deduced that Rhaegar is not here?

Fowler stood there, quietly, for a while. If none of those boys was Rhaegar. Where was he? Was he being hidden in the Citadel? Was he even taken there in the first place?

Yep. He's seen the arrivals that should contain Rhaegar and there's no Rhaegar. It's possible the Citadel are hiding him but you've got justification for believing he's not here at all. Just no proof of where he is or whether he's not here on purpose or be design. This lets you start an investigation, it doesn't necessarily provide proof that there's a conspiracy afoot.

Mighty fine then. I just needed to know that, it was the reason Doran sent him here.

On an unrelated matter. Would you prefer that I didn't quote your messages? I get a notification on my cellphone when someone quotes mine, but I don't mind that. Maybe you do

"Keep the money. And keep quiet about my visit" He said to the Maester. Fowler was confident he wouldn't say anything.

Then he left in a rush. He had news for the Prince

ooc: Sorry to interject here but seeing as Rhaegar is my character...I think this investigation can lead a character to believe with certainty that Rhaegar never arrived at the Citadel.
