Information Thread for Potential Bretonnian Units
The Kingdom of Bretonnia is a highly-chivalrous feudal kingdom that lies between the lands of the Grey Mountains and the Great Ocean. Bretonnia is second only in size and military power to that of the Empire of Man, both their chief rival and closest allies, having a culture and society that revolves around the ideals of nobility, social birthright and the upholding of a strictly enforced code of chivalry. Ruled by a Royarch, the nation of Bretonnia has been known throughout the Kingdoms of Man for having the greatest Knights within the entire Old World, rivaling or in some cases even surpassing that of the Knightly Orders of the Empire. A proud and honorable kingdom, the warriors of Bretonnia comprised mostly of Knights and Noblemen, who ride into battle with lance, horse, and sword, seeking out glories and rooting out injustice wherever they go.

Cult of the Lady of the LakeSpoiler Alert, click show to read:Prophetesses of the Lady = Powerful sorceresses of the Cult of the Lady of the Lake. Their magical powers are vastly superior to the lower-ranking Damsels, being much more proficient in harnessing the power of nature using the Lore of Life, Beasts or the Heavens. Perhaps it would suit more if they are the Lore of Heavens as the wiki page says that Damsels cannot follow it, so it would differ them from one another. They have authority enough to use the rare Pegasus for a mount.

Character Mounts & Bound MonstersSpoiler Alert, click show to read:Bretonnian Warhorse = The horses were big, powerful and not lacking in stamina. The Bretonnian Knights therefore made every effort to maintain and improve their special breed. A very important factor in this was the peace pact with the Wood Elves of Athel Loren. Griffon = A Griffon is a combination of a giant bird of prey and a big cat, such as a lion, or tiger. Griffon's have massive feathered wings, and beaks which are hooked and can easily sever a man's limb. Their claws, which are reminiscent of a hawk's talons, are kept sharp by regular scoring against stone. Griffons appear to be creatures born from the mutating power of Chaos.

Female OnlySpoiler Alert, click show to read:Unicorn = Unicorns are drawn to female mages as moths to a flame, and find the taste of magic intoxicating. Cults of BretonniaSpoiler Alert, click show to read:The religious spirit of Bretonnia is often as divided as the division between the nobility and peasantry. Within Bretonnian society, the worship of the Lady of the Lake is considered the main religious doctrine. Much of Bretonnian culture is shaped by the actions of the Cult of the Lady, making them a large political power amongst the nobility. However, unlike the worship of other cults, such as the Cult of Sigmar, where Imperial doctrine claims the allegiance of all the Empire's people, the Cult of the Lady is restricted to the nobility.
Although the middle class of freemen commoners are allowed to worship at shrines and temples, they are required to pay a tithe unto the brotherhood maintaining such sites. For the nobility, such tithing is entirely voluntary and the amount dependent upon the noble's generosity. Most tithing's are thus made for show and to establish their social status and reputation amongst the peerage.
Peasants are prohibited from openly worshiping the Lady of the Lake under pain of death or very severe punishment. Instead, the peasantry are allowed and in some cases, forced to worship the Gods of the Old World.
Cult of the Lady of the LakeSpoiler Alert, click show to read:The Cult of the Lady of the Lake is a state-official religious cult that serves to follow and uphold the values set upon them by the Lady of the Lake, and to serve the interest of her and the Kingdom of Bretonnia. Since ancient times, the Bretonnians have worshiped the Lady of the Lake as their goddess and their primary deity, a figure of myth and legend who guides their kings and protects their lands from harm.

They burst from a mystical lake, riding upon bestial water-horses which snorted and grunted through dagger like teeth. Their hair rippled, swirling as if underwater and their voices roared in unison, untold years of rage waiting to be unleashed. Scaled warbeasts snapped and kicked and thrashed, hooked flails tore limbs from joints, tridents and spears sent bodies flying through the air.”

Cult of MyrmidiaSpoiler Alert, click show to read:While the Cult of Myrmidia is growing substantially due to the presence of nearby Estalia. Being a martial God, it is a common theme for peasant soldiers and common militia to revere Myrmidia more than any other deity. The academy is located in the small town attached to Castle Carcassonne. As it is far from court and in a conflict-ridden region, the academy is not fashionable with Bretonnian chivalry. The famously laconic Duke Huebald, a true warleader, values the academy greatly and sends promising squires there for training. Other students are drawn from the younger sons of noble families, the mercenary bands based at the castle, and recruits from Estalia itself.

They also hold regular services for expatriate southerners (the specific day varies according to local customs, but is often every five days). Shieldmaidens of Myrmidia = ”The command structure is also central to her teachings, but there are several legends where the Goddess or her Shieldmaidens chose to do what was right, not what they were ordered to. Knights of the RealmsSpoiler Alert, click show to read:Bretonnia has some of the finest Knights in the world. The current Bretonnian roster appears to cover the majority of these already, but here are a few that have been missed out.
Crusaders = Though not strictly linking to the time of the game, I thought that perhaps it would be interesting to suggest a regiment of veteran Bretonnian knights who fought down in the southern desert of Araby, trying to cleanse the evil from those lands.

Knights of the Glatisant = Not an official name, but the concept art depicts knights riding on Questing Beasts. Questing Beasts come from Arthurian legend, and they were also known as Beast Glatisant. So the name kind of works neatly. Knights of the Perilous Lance = Named after a knight of renown who won every joust at every tournament he entered, never revealing his face. I’ve created this unit based on the special hero listed in the 5th edition army book.
http://whfb.lexicanum.com/wiki/Warha..._(5th_Edition)
Preyton Knights = Assumed by me. These are knights who have taken on the valorous task of hunting down the savage and hateful Preytons in Bretonnia and have succeeded. To commemorate their victory, their helms bear blackened and serrated antlers, quite possibly from the Preyton they slew.
http://warhammerfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Preytons
The Black Knight = The Black Knight is an old and well known figure of Bretonnian folklore and legend. In his aspect as something to be dread, he undoubtedly embodies the age old fear of the Chaos Knight, the Dark Elf rider or the Undead horsemen who have plagued Bretonnia since time immemorial. Thus he represents the archetypal adversary of a bold Bretonnian knight. In his less ominous aspect, he represents the anonymous Knight. Such a Knight may wish to disguise his identity under black, shabby robes, lacking any heraldic device by which he might be recognised. Some Questing Knights do indeed adopt such a garb. There is always speculation as to why a Knight should do this, maybe it is because he must redeem his honour, or has he forsaken the true faith?

Knights of the Birth Sword = All male nobles are presented with a fine sword at their birth: it is supposed to be the first thing that they grasp. This sword is then hung above the boy’s bed until he is old enough to train with it. From that point, it rests on a rack beside his bed whilst he sleeps. Most Carcassonnians refuse to fight with any other weapon and do indeed seem to do better whilst holding it. This is only for Carcassonne. The sword is more vital to them than the lance.

PeasantrySpoiler Alert, click show to read:Adventurers = Almost every single wiki entry for the different dukedoms of Bretonnia has made mention of many peasants running away to become Adventurers in the big wide world beyond, it stands to reason that these may return and fight alongside their armies. I have no idea what they’d be like, I’m guessing a unit of randomly equipped and armed troops, but its up to whoever makes models to do it how they want, I’m just suggesting possibilities.

Freemen = "A small but growing middle class of commoners, also referred to as Freemen, make up both the professional trades and merchant class within Bretonnian society. Although literate for the most part they can be either self taught, or instructed by monks as there are no public schools within Bretonnia. Artisans, craftsmen and skilled semi-professionals live almost exclusively within the Kingdom's few cities and numerous larger towns, situated mostly along the kingdoms coasts and rivers."

The Bretonnians hunt them during the winter, when the Snails hibernate in the forests around Mousillon. Hunting sleeping snails is an exacting sport, and one for which the famous Bretonnian Snail Hound is superbly adapted: it is said these large, indolent animals can catch the scent of a giant snail from up to a mile away, indicating their excitement by slowly wagging their tails and loping towards their prey. Apart from Bretonnians, who eat them, these creatures are largely left alone, although their shells are sometimes used to make windows, lamp fittings, combs and other small decorative items."

Sea Elemental = Some say that as the ages pass, Triton and his kind slowly become more like the seas they are lord over, turning wilder and less controllable until there is very little to distinguish them from the towering waves and raging storms of the ocean. The Sea Elementals, living mountains of blue-black water that rear out of the water in the barely recognisable shape of a huge man, are perhaps some stage of this process.

The Monstrous Stone Thrower = "This is a catapult operated by a massive counterweight which swings a long shaft and hurls a boulder a very great distance. The Siege Tower = "Hundreds of wagons are required to carry the pre-fabricated timbers that make up the siege tower, and when these are put together the siege tower will be raised higher than any known wall. While Couronne is traditionally the seat of the Bretonnian throne, the steward of the city and the ruler of the surrounding dukedom is the Duke of Couronne. During the Crusades, the Chevaliers de Couronne served under King Louen the Righteous. It was this regiment that finally defeated the Palace Guard of Sultan Jaffar in the battle of El Haikk. The king rewarded the Chevalier de Couronne by granting them an enchanted banner of great potency. To this day, the regiment takes this banner with them when they go to war. It has flown over countless battlefields. At times of peace, the banner is kept in the Grail Chapel of Couronne, and guarded by the best Knights under the command of the noble Duke. They use lance, shield and barded horses. They carry the Banner of Righteous Retribution.

QuenellesSpoiler Alert, click show to read:Companions of Quenelles = In a more hopeful age, each of the Companions of Quenelles would have passed into legend, for there was not a knight amongst them who had not performed deeds worthy of Gilles. There was Gioffre of Anglaron, who had slain the dragon Scaramor, and Taurin the Wanderer, who alone held the Pass of Tainêle against the ghoul king Straxos for two nights and a day. Leon of Toular, slayer of the treacherous Baron Hernald, and of course Comte Raynor, who had set a goblin horde to rout, by the expedient course of making as much noise as a small army.

Man O' War NavySpoiler Alert, click show to read:Broadside Cannons = Seems Galleons use these, but gunpowder isn’t compatible with Bretonnians on the land, but at sea it might be another matter. I don’t know for certain.

Buccaneer = Buccaneers patrol the coast of Bretonnia. They are small craft crewed by private individuals who are chartered by the King to keep the sea lanes clear. In times of war these small, catapult-armed ships are used to swell the numbers of the fleet.

Buccaneers = Their crews tend to be villainous individuals, lacking the discipline and elan of Corsair crews. Many are condemned criminals, spared the gallows if they will sign on the crew of a Buccaneer. The offers on these ships are among the hardest men afloat, maintaining discipline among their men with fear and the lash.

Buccaneer Catapult = Buccaneers are armed with catapults; large mechanical devices which can lob huge rocks enormous distances.
http://jake.ryft.org/warhammer/mowstuff/MOWrulebook.pdf
Corsair = Corsairs are the greatest ship of the line. They are swift heavily armed craft ideal for long sea voyages and deadly combat. In battle their thunderous broadsides strike terror into the hearts of bretonnia’s enemies.

Corsairs = Each ship’s crew is taught to respect their captain and believe their ship is the finest craft that has ever sailed. This means there is tremendous rivalry among the crews to prove their valour and skill, and each ship in a squadron will vie to sink the most enemy ships.
http://jake.ryft.org/warhammer/mowstuff/MOWrulebook.pdf
Galleon = Galleons are built in the King’s shipyard from carefully selected oak timbers. The laying of each keel is a notable occasion marked by a great religious service as the keel is blessed. By tradition each galleon is crewed by volunteers, carefully selected from the ranks of the navy; they are an elite crew.
