So, what music, or more specifically, musicians were popular when you were growing up. Actually, lets be more specific, what artists were popular in your area when you were young? You know, artists that got the most airplay, not music that was necessarily popular nationwide, just in your locality....

    I'd say:

    Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
    Eric Clapton
    James Taylor
    Oasis
    Hootie & The Blowfish
    John Mellencamp

Those are six I can remember off the top of my head... guaranteed to remember more later....

I really can't remember much of what was popular when I was really young. I do remember hearing R.E.M. when I was only a few years old though, I think.

I grew up in what I consider the worst era in music history ever! I grew up in the era of the boy bands and the most popular of these in my school was backstreet boys, nsync, 98 degrees, and some other gay boy band, god how do I hate myself for listening to that music.

In elementary school they forced us to square dance in gym class (electric slide!), dance the macarena in music class and play the most ridiculed instrument of all time: the notorious recorder.

Yep, that sure was torture. Later on I remember liking coolio, tupac and an early green day when they had that song....forgot how it went, but the music video was about a mental hospital. Man that was a long time ago.

I think that the Offspring were still pretty popular when I was 8 or 9.

I'd say grunge. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, etc were all popular when I was young. Of course, in my house it was the Beatles, the Kinks, and other Brit Invasion bands.

I remember the Oasis, R.E.M. , Nirvana, some Finnish bands etc. from the early nineties. Then when the music quality declined in the late nineties I remember Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, Offspring, Eminem, Dr. Dre and Limp Bizkit.

Man, I don't know, it was back before I cared for music; although, well ... depends when you mean "young". At 18 you could say I am pretty much still young!

I don't really count primary school, no-one really listened to music seriously then. Then during high school there was the nu-metal explosion that I abhorred with all my living breath (a stance which continues to this day.) Soon dance seemed to get a minor resurgence, and everyone wanted to go to Ibiza at 16, which was propagated further by the Kevin and Perry movie. Then I think the first tentative steps towards the emo/new-wave stage appeared. But I think by around 16ish everyone started branching off really. My mates were all into the pop-punk going round really, which doesn't seem to have abated in many ways now.

I myself got into music about 18 months ago, kind of randomly starting with Guns n' Roses thanks to one of my mates forcing it on everyone in the 6th Form. I branched off from there, become the alt. rock fiend I am today...

Well, I grew up mostly with old-school rock music and heavy metal, influenced by my uncle. I can still remember Foreigner, White Lion, Black Sabbath, Bon Jovi, Systers of Mercy, Kiss, Venom, and the list could grow even longer.

Hmm, okay. I remember in 3rd grade liking the band Smash Mouth, especially that one song . . . "All Star," I think it was. In 4th grade, I liked blink-182 and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. In 5th grade, I'm not even sure. I know Sum 41 was one band I listened to a bit at some point in there. In 6th grade, I'm not sure exactly, but I think that was the year in which I started watching "FUSE" or whatever, so I liked music I saw there.

7th grade: I started liking some good bands, like Billy Talent and Alkaline Trio. I eventually started listening to stuff like Anti-Flag and Bad Religion by the end of that year. In 8th grade, my taste started to become better: Bad Religion overtook Alkaline Trio as my favorite band, and I started listening to more good stuff. I remember listening to the Rock Against Bush albums too; they were and are quite good in terms of music.

In 9th grade, I listened to tons more bands. Lasting additions to my favorite bands included: None More Black; Suicide Machines; the Loved Ones; Good Riddance; Against Me!; Rise Against; Hot Water Music; Flogging Molly; Fugazi; Minor Threat.

Bands I've come to like or like much more this school year: Ted Leo/Pharmacists; Gray Matter; Embrace; Bouncing Souls; World/Inferno Friendship Society; R.E.M.; the Walkmen; Paint It Black; OK Go; the Shins; and a few others.

Hehe, I remember Smash Mouth, though I only remember "All Star" as one of their songs.... When I was in Elementary school, and even 5th grade, i was still listening to classical, It was'nt until 6th grade I started listening to more rock oriented stuff....

So I suppose Elementary school was a mix of mellow rock (what I listed in first post) and Classical....

Oh! I see, I grew up in a classical household. We were always listening to Mozart at my mother's or The Beatles at my father's. I loved the music but I didn't started listening to any of it myself until about two years ago.
