Default Starry Sept-Oldtown-Seat of the High Septon

    High Septon
    Zyre Vaith
    Age: 42
    Position- High Septon
    Starting Income- NA
    Salary- NA
    Ethnicity- Westerosi
    Languages- Common Tongue

    Traits-

    +3 Charisma
    +3 Capture
    +2 Assassin
    +2 Battles

    Bio-
Zyre was born in the Reach to a minor noble family close to Oldtown. He was the third son of the family and though trained in the arts of war, at the age of 16 he joined The Faith and slowly progressed his way through the the ranks. Zyre was disgusted at how soft the church had become. Heretics and apostates roamed Westeros at will with no censure from the church. Most of the North still worshipped false heathen gods and some of the population even worshipped the damned gods imported from Essos. Zyre was forced to accept the status quo throughout his many years of service even as he became the septon for the Starry Sept itself in Oldtown. However, news of the burning of the Great Sept of Baelor and the death of the High Septon was simply too much for Zyre to bear. With the agreement of the majority of The Faith's leadership after a vote, Zyre was declared High Septon. Righteous anger and zealousness fill his entire being. The Northern heretic even now was said to govern the kingdom, the Great Sept of Baelor lay in ruins, the former High Septon was dead, Kings Landing was filled with heresy, and the North was also filled with heresy. Zyre knew much had been placed on his plate by the Seven, but their will would be done now that a strong man of faith had taken the mantle of High Septon.

    Treasury- 15,000 dragons

The Starry Sept is the new residence of the High Septon and it is filled with over 500 knights of the Reach as a new protection against the excesses of mortal rulers. The new and very zealous High Septon Zyre preaches to larger and larger crowds within the Sept, lambasting the Northmen, Rhllor, and both claimants to the throne. This is truly a place of zealotry and faith to the Seven.

    Other Residents-

Ser Ryker Frey, Sword of the High Septon

    +10 duels, +12 duels HP
    +3 Survival

    500 Warrior's Sons (Knights)

    Independent Septs

    (Added by Poach)

An independent Sept, which is a Sept within a province that has reached an agreement with the ruling Lord to be entirely outside secular jurisdiction, can be set up for 20,000 Dragons. (eg, a Tier I building)

These Septs will be larger than normal, acting more like a monastery than a simple Sept, having within them a larger number of Septons and other religious persons, and are guarded by small volunteer detachments of Warrior's Sons and Poor Fellows.

The Sept can become a Fortress Sept (and acts like a Holdfast) if a total of 150,000 Dragons are invested (including the 20,000 initial investment, so 130,000 more), but will retain the same basic garrison. The presence of such a Sept would allow for people to shelter within it should the castle fall (assuming the local senior Septon agrees) or house more Faith Militant (should more be sourced from players willing to devote some of their own standing troops as Faith Militant).

A Fortress Sept does not increase the max garrison size of the province it is in, but the basic garrison given to all independent Septs will not count towards that cap, only extras on top of that.

    Independent Sept Garrisons

    20 Heavy Infantry
    40 Light Infantry
    20 Polearm Infantry
    20 Archers

    Total: 100 men

These garrisons act like castle garrisons: they will not under any circumstance leave the Independent Sept or Fortress Sept. They may assist in repelling a siege assault on the castle the Sept is inside if the senior Septon approves of it, but they will not assist in repelling raids and they will not leave their Sept to join field armies, escort people, or perform any other function.

For RP purposes the Heavy Infantry can be regarded as Warrior's Sons, the remainder as Poor Fellows.

    Current Fortress Septs:

    - Oldtown (20 days)
    - Storm's End (21 days)

    Current Independent Septs:

    - Oldstones

"Your Holiness." After a stooping bow, the Knight shuffles forwards slightly. "I have been sent here by my Lord Baratheon. He hopes to find Your Holiness well. He wishes to inform you that the Great Sept of Baelor is currently under immediate reconstruction, after the dreadful incident that occurred in the capital." The young Knight, a Lonmouth, fiddles nervously with the stag badge that was pinned to his breast.

The High Septon actually rises from his seat, and clearly he is not a decadent man. His frame ins lean and his face burns with the fire of righteous indignation. The High Septon turns to the knight and stares at him as he speaks.

"That is a start, however small the start actually is. My own people will arrive in the city to supervise the construction to ensure it is up to the new standards of The Faith. Do not let your liege think that merely rebuilding the Great Sept will redirect my wrath. My predecessor is dead, heretics worshipping the red god fill King's Landing, and the heathen Stark and his Northmen still have power both in the capital and in the North. If your lord truly wishes to repent of past sins and become a new son of the Faith, I have a number of duties for him."

The Knight was preparing to interject, before biting his tongue. This High Septon was not the flatulent worm his predecessor was, it seemed.

"I shall direct any messages you have for my Lord, Your Holiness. He views the destruction of the Sept as a grievous sin." Came the reply.

The High Septon continues to eye the knight with an unnerving gaze.

"If your lord is truly seeking to repent and gain my support he will have to show himself to be a zealous follower of the Faith. The Great Sept must be rebuilt and my men will assist and direct this effort. There is a growing number of men within the capital worshipping the red god and there is word of a priest who seeks to convert more and more to his faith. There is even word of a red temple within the city! These heretics must be stamped out immediately. The red temple should be burnt, the red priest captured and sent here, and all heretics who worship the red god must either convert or die. The heresy that is the Starks and other Northmen must also be addressed. Any who enter the capital should be captured and sent here for judgement due to their heresy. In time, we will decide how the Starks and their heretic North are to be dealt with. Take these messages to your lord knight."

A message arrives and is brought to the High Septon.

    Your Holiness,

We, the League of Holy Lords, deplore and condemn what the mad Aerys did to the Faith. We, faithful men all, are revolted by the heresy and hear your excommunication of House Targaryen. We pray they repent, and conduct what penance the Seven deem appropriate for their heinous crimes.

Though we owe earthly bonds of fealty to our Lords and Masters, know that in our hearts we look first to you, as the representative of the Seven in flesh. We shall tolerate no further assaults against the Faith, we shall pay no heed to those of House Targaryen while they remain outside the light of the Seven. Instead we look to you for guidance, strength, and wisdom.

    Signed,

    Many names
[OOC: I don't know how many players are on that list. I believe it's only Dragonstone (me) and Tarth (Oz), but any players on there get first choice on whether they're excluded from it. I've elected to have Donnel Lefford on Dragonstone join the League, but Oz may not have Tarth do the same, and I don't know about other players.]

OOC- Understood. Should the High Septon ask for donations to help rebuild the Great Sept and improve the Starry Sept which has become the new seat of the Faith?

The messenger gets on one knee, bowing his head before the leader of the Faith.

Your Holiness, the most zealous and rightful High Septon of the Seven, I come bearing a message from my master, who wished to send this before his arrival.

A scroll was procured and handed to one of the Warriors' Sons to be given to the High Septon.

To one who speaks for the Seven and interrupts their word,

I come to speak with Your Holiness, but my lineage and surname would surely cause trouble for me if I arrived without this message being sent ahead of me. I request that the ancient and sacred tradition of Guest Right be invoked upon my arrival so that I may speak with your most holy person without fear for my life and with a clarity of mind. I come to you as a humble soul and hope that you may allow my requests so that I may speak with you.

Written by a most humble hand,
    Maegor of the House Targaryen

Righteous anger burned in the High Septon's eyes at the mere sight of the name Targaryen, but he would listen to the words.

"Take to him my reply. He will have the Guest Right and be free from harm while in this holy place, but I await his intentions and words to be known to me before I judge his devotion to the Faith."

Days later, Maegor's presence was announced to the Starry Sept. As expected, it did rouse a commotion of sorts among the Devout present. It was a gamble, but he was willing to do this for the sake of the greater good. To prove himself worthy could yield great potential for his own claim to the Iron Throne. Before entering the city, Maegor did pray to the Father for strength and guidance as he was entering a nest of vipers, vipers who did not take kindly to the Targaryen bloodline.

When he arrived, the Valyrian discarded his usual clothing and purchased a simple set of sack cloth robes and clothing. He needed to appear humble and humble he would be. Maegor came alone to Oldtown and the Starry Sept; he had no guards, no royally appointed soldiers, no retainers. He simply came on his own to the High Septon and the Starry Sept. Outside of the building, he knelt in his sack cloth garments; his fingers digging deep into his skin as the Valyrian awaited word of his request and his uncertain fate within Oldtown.

Many among the Warriors' Sons clamored to seize or harm Maegot, but a single stern word from the High Septon brought back calm and order to the situation. However, the High Septon did not return to his chambers to conduct a private conversation. This would be done in the open for all to see.

"What do you seek Targaryen? If you have not noticed your presence here is not especially welcome. Your kin murdered my predecessor and burned down the holiest of the holies. Speak your piece now while things are calm."

Maegor rises from his place. He thought over his words once more, having been doing so the whole way down to the Starry Sept, knowing they could decide his fate, good and bad.

I am a Targaryen, Your Holiness, but I am not of my cousin's ilk. I was not born through incestuous bonds nor have I conducted incest myself. And you may paint me with the same brush you paint Aerys, but I too was arrested and imprisoned by my own cousin when I returned to the capital a year before his death. I never knew why, but I was shackled and thrown into a cell, only to be released and put under watch by his minions. If I wasn't his cousin, I would have been murdered like the others he has killed.

The Targaryen then reveals his hands to the High Septon, showing them plain and ordinary. He then turns, showing his hands to all those gathered before returning his gaze to the High Septon

I lived among the commoners ever since I was 14 and left the Red Keep. I traveled throughout the streets of King's Landing, the shores of Dragonstone, the ruins of Summerhall and the mountains of the Vale. Even though my cousin deserved to die, I was given a number of chances to do so, but I would not sully my own honor by lowering myself to his base instincts of wanton violence. I am the grandson of Maekar Targaryen, son of Aerion Brightflame, both of whom were noted warriors. Even when I was coerced to slay my cousin on the day of his death, I slayed the man who tried to have me betray him for I would not become a kinslayer, I would not taint my hands with his vile blood.

With those words said, Maegor then fell to his knees and bowed his head, showing a pose of submission before the most holy of the Devout.

I am like all dragons of House Targaryen, Your Holiness. I have purple eyes and silver hair, but I am my own individual. Whereas power corrupted my cousin and madness gripped him, I have been free of such vices and continue to uphold myself as innocent as the day I was born. I ask that you not look upon me as you do my kin, but see me as a truly honorable man of my Household. That you may see that I am not like my kin at all.

The High Septon is not swayed. Aerys too spoke with honey words when seeking something he wanted.

"Your speech is well crafted, but despite your protestations you are a Targaryen and kin to the one who killed my predecessor and burnt the center of the Faith to the ground. Showing your devotion and loyalty to the Faith will require far more than mere honeyed words. Action is required to show that you are pure in the eyes of the Seven and to show your devotion and loyalty to the cause of the Faith. Return to your feet and pledge yourself again to the Seven and the Faith. You still do not have the favor of the Seven or the Faith and you are still a Targaryen, but deeds can help to erase the damage caused by your kin. Return to the capital and bring fire to the temple of the red god there. Burn it to the ground, capture those who worship the red god and either convert them or put them to the sword. Capture the priest who leads these heretics and bring him here to the Starry Sept for judge. If the bastarrd Stark or other Northern heretics still reside in the capital, kill or arrest them and send them here for the trial. Become a cleansing sword of the Faith and both the Faith and the Seven may forgive you for the transgressions of your kin. This sept is the new home of the faith here in Westeros and it could use a number of repairs and addittions. It would be well for you to show your faith with the fruits the Seven have gifted you as well."

To become a zealot of the Seven, it was something that Maegor was unsure of. However, he needed the support of the Faith if he was to claim his birth right and take the Iron Throne. He looks upon the High Septon before rising.

You shall have my pledge to the Faith as any man pledges upon the day of his birth. As for the heretics within the city, hopefully, you will see them burn as the Great Sept burned. It will be in all due time.

In the chaos that would be created by the arrival of the Golden Company, the Targaryen could easily ensure the Red Faith's eradication. As for Lord Stark, he would still need to determine that action.

Then his mind trailed to another show of devotion to the High Septon. Once more, Maegor bows before speaking to His Holiness.

As a token of my appreciation to Your Holiness for granting me this audience despite my birth and name, I shall pledge 15,000 gold dragons to your exchequer. I have little money, but I shall give what I can give.
