The aftermath of the Great Sept fire
The Great Sept lay in ruins, columns of blackened stone standing as a pitiful monument to what had once been an opulent and marvellous structure. Somewhere under the rubble, the High Septon's body lay broken and rotting.
Far away in Oldtown, what senior figures of the Faith that survived the culling had gathered and elected a new High Septon. A bitter man, an angry man, a zealous man. Five hundred knights had been found, the most devout and holy of men, and with them the Warrior's Sons had been declared refounded. Part of the Starry Sept had been turned into their chapter house, and they were now the security that kept this, the Faith's ancient and now new home, secure against further ravages.
In the Crownlands the aftershocks were most profound. Many Lords, once loyally sworn directly to the Iron Throne, had reacted with horror, and then anger. Some found comfort in their faith, and with the pronouncements coming from Oldtown excommunicating House Targaryen, their loyalties now lay with the High Septon over the King. The further one went from King's Landing the less severe the reaction was: those sworn to Lords Paramount had no one to direct their anger to, but nonetheless some would now find loyalty to the Faith over secular rule.
The centre of the catastrophe, King's Landing, was in turmoil. Self-proclaimed Poor Fellows had sprung up here in force, in far greater concentration than in other towns and villages across the Crownlands, making the streets unsafe for those not of the Faith. Brothels are regularly attacked, several Northmen have been found strung up as heathens, and nobles dare not go into the streets without heavy escort, less they draw the ire of any number of firebrand preachers and the baying mobs that hang on their every word.
Impact
- All Lords of the Crownlands (High and Minor) take an 8/20 roll for becoming loyal to the Faith over the Crown. Those who are loyal to the Faith will have a -15 malus to any commands by the King (summoned for war, summoned to King's Landing, paying tax) unless the Faith backs the command, and all will rebel against the Crown should the Crown move against the Faith (or them, on account of their loyalty to the faith).
- All Lords of those regions directly bordering the Crownlands (High and Minor Lords along the Crownlands border) take a 4/20 roll for the above. They will remain loyal as normal to their Lord Paramount but will use the -15 or rebellion modifier if the Lord Paramount is issuing commands for the King or attempting to assist the King (eg raising armies to fight for the King).
- All Lords in the Reach will do this 4/20 roll, due to Oldtown and the Starry Sept being the new centre of religion for the Seven.
- Any non-Seven characters that enter or leave the city (and I expect the playerbase to help us keep track of this, if you're a Northman and come to the city please let us know) will have a 10/20 roll of being set upon by an angry crowd, followed by a 1/20 chance of death and 4/20 chance of injury (eg, 1 dead, 2-5 injured, 6-20 survived).
- A player High Septon has been given fairly strict guidelines on how to act. There will be no armies of the Faith, no revolutions to create a theocracy. He will be a religious fundamentalist that views House Targaryen as cursed by the Seven, and will not be like the corrupt High Septons that came before him. The Crown will now have to struggle with the loyalty to the Faith among royal vassals.

Re: The aftermath of the Great Sept fire
The following is a list of High and Minor Lords that rolled low enough to become religious fanatics. Every region bordering the Crownlands got at least some Lords becoming fundamentalists. The Crownlands, as you might expect, has by far the worst of the fallout from Aerys slaughtering of the Most Devout and destroying of the Great Sept. All King’s Landing’s direct vassals have turned against royal supremacy as have a number of other provinces and High Lords. I’m still nominally Castellan of Dragonstone so I’m going to respect the roll there and have Donnel Lefford become radicalised. I’ve been at a total loss with him since Adamat dropped out so this might allow me to bring him back into the game.
These Lords will start referring to themselves as the Holy Lords and form a faction of their own. They will support each other against the Crown, or against other Lords who seek to attack them over the issue of their allegiance, or against non-Seven characters or houses.
They will not form an army for the High Septon upon request: they still have oaths to their respective Lords and King. They will take up arms to defend themselves or other Holy Lords, and have -15 to rolls when interacting with the King, and with their liege Lord (if not the King) if that interaction is trying to make them do something against the Faith or other Holy Lords, or if that something is to support any Targaryens.
Blackfyres are regarded as Targaryen by the Holy Lords. If the High Septon declares otherwise this list will be re-rolled at 10/20 chance for each Holy Lord to stop being a Holy Lord, as they have come to doubt the moral authority of the High Septon if he sells out: they’re of Targaryen blood and bastards to boot.
The faction will cease to have any effect if the High Septon reverses the excommunication of House Targaryen.
