Default Windows 10: cannot start even M2TW for EB2

    hello,

eager to try out the new EB2 release i first wanted to switch finally to Windows 10 before any larger Installations. ...but i cannot run even M2TW - and yes, i already posted this on the M2TW forum but there ist not much going on there and because i only bought it in order to play EB2 i put it here also.

So i finally accomplished a clean install of Windows10 Pro 64 bit - i installed M2TW Gold Edition on it and couldnt start it. (from DVD - not Steam, whatever that is)
right after trying to launch it, this Message pops up: (well it comes up in german, i can only try to translate it)

    "medieval2.exe - Systemerror
Programm cannot be launched, because d3dx9_30.dll is missing on your computer. Install the programm again to solve this problem."

well first i tried this but it didn't help. In the first Install i did not check the DirectX option because on Windows10 the DirectX version is 11.1 - so the version on the M2TW DVD would only be an older one.
In the second try i checked this option but then after half way of the installation a message showed up like: ..could not launch directX.. and i thought, ok this might be because
there is already a newly version of it on the computer.
But again above message showed up after trying to start the game.

I installed it not in the programm files because i need M2TW for the EB2 Mod and so it should be installed outside of the programm files. (..in my case like D:\Games\Sega\M2TW)

Searched on the internet for hours in regard of the d3dx9_30.dll file or a possible downgrade of directX ...but also, i dont know what exactly the problem is.

So if anyone here might know about this problem and could shine some light upon it here - i would be very thankful.
The game should run on Windows 10 at least i still hope so.

    thanks,
    Kleitos

I had this problem but i just checked the install DX thing and it worked normally.
Not sure why its not letting you install it.

Windows 10 has worked really well for me with everything so far.

You are missing some, if not all the DX9 libraries, please follow the steps here

    Edit:
    You need this as well

thanks z3n - but before i read your reply now i asked the microsoft hotline - ..got the info to just install an older DirectX version
(no need to deinstall the newer one) so i did - made a newstart. in windows 10 there was this actualize and then newstart option..
after newstart i checked dxdiag: and still there was v.11.1 (i installed 9.29 before) ...??
But, somehow anyway, who knows how all this stuff works, the missing file (or maybe files) seemed to be on the computer.
started M2TW and it really worked without any error message.

so, its time to get EB2.2.

...actually i expected the SafeDisc issue as a problem - like last year with Windows7 ...i am really positively surprised that i dont have to bother with that now on windows10...

The direct x version only shows you the latest, you installed all the proper (missing) libraries now which is why it is working, I once had that problem too.

You also need to follow this as someone else encountered an issue midgame at random times on windows 10 without following step two ; http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...9b31bf5?auth=1

    ok, good to know.
well this "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! ..sounds somehow familiar - but quite long time ago and with EB1 i guess.
...but i guess these two steps in this link: one would only has to do that if some troubles will arise - not as a requirement to get EB2.2 running in the first place?

Just do step two, you don't really need to do step one in my opinion, you could of course but with windows 10 it's probably not necessary.

As far as I understand it, this error happens when the exe calls on a function (as it is written in c++) that doesn't exist in the computers installed libraries. Windows 10 is missing some I assume, similar to your issue with dx9.

after EB2.2 installation i just saw the "post installation instructions for Windows 10" which included
this very link you attached in your reply..

so, the step 2 at least, the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 and 2008 Redistributable Package is anyway mandatory?.

ok, then but im a bit confused: there are four links. ..i have Win10 Pro 64 bit so i guess i need the ones
with (x64) right? And install "Visual C++ 2005" and "Visual C++ 2008 SP1" one after the other? ..or just one of them?

(..guess (x86) will mean the 32 bit system - dont get it why they can't name it like that?)

i installed DirectX version 9.29.1962.0 (as i checked now) before - is it still recommended to install
exactly this one from the "post installation instructions for Windows 10" :
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down...ylang=en&id=35

that one is version 9.29.1974 - the file name is the same as the one i downloaded: dxwebsetup.exe (but 4 KB larger)
or is this a special one, and if mandatory: can i just install it again without deinstalling any previous DirectX version?

i know im a total noob to this technical windows stuff,
but thank you for your patience and answers

The DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer detects if something is missing, otherwise it will let you know everything is up to date.

x86 does mean 32 bit, so take the 64 bit ones (x64) and yes that is all there is to it. No clue why they don't make that clear and yes it is mandatory so that you minimize the chances of encountering a CTD like that. I would do it myself on Windows 10 without hesitation to ensure the best possible experience without worrying about a sporadic crash I could have avoided.

yes, i got it finally running - made the two visual C installations.

I couldn't install this specific DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer though. (from this link in the "post installation instructions for Windows 10".) ..i always got those "internal Systemerror ...for more information look into dxerror.log and directx.log in the folder windows" message.
probably because i already installed this DirectX version 9.29.1962.0 (dxwebsetup.exe) the day before. ..since the recommended directX version is 9.29.1974 and with the same name, just 4KB's larger4 - i guess it will make not much difference.
Well, i got the game running - there are no problems at all - according to microsoft hotline: as long as the game/mod runs - the dirctX version is ok - otherwise the game wouldnt even start.

thanks, for your advice - im so happy that i can run the mod on Windows 10 as well.
