Default Core 2 Duo - disable 1 core?

    Hi guys,

Anyone running an Intel C2D chip (I'm thinking specifically of the 6600 but it applies to any of them) seen any performance benefit or reduction in any lag encountered in large battles/sieges by setting M2TW to run on only one core?

    Thanks, G91

Well, since both cores are the same speed, and one core will be running the game, whilst the other will be running your background tasks, you should see NOT a speed increase.

    Hi Shaun,

Do you mean a speed increase if you set M2TW to run on only one of the cores?

does M2TW even run on both of the cores? I though it is not programmed to utilize both cores, you can only set a preference as to which core you want it to run on, however, it does not divide itself between the two... I'm not sure though.

You can try and run it on one core and see what happens. Theoretically it M2TW should run a little bit quicker since the game isn't optimised for multiple threads hence the game will run at the slowest clock turn the processor churns out. This is why when dual cores first appeared single cores out preformed them.

To run the game on one core or one thread you need to start the game, and then exit to desktop (i.e. Alt-Tab or Windows Key + M so the game is still running in the background), then give it the old three finger salute on the keyboard and click on processes. Find M2TW in the list of app and right click on it and there should be one there that says 'Set Affinity' and then uncheck one of the CPU's. M2TW will now one use the one core and will run at the highest possible clock rate, which should in theory at least give a few more FPS.

I've noticed some older games not working with Dual core setups (and processors that have hyper-threading such as the P4 Northwood C model), this is a handy tip to remember in order to get those games to work.
