Default Moat Cailin, Seat of House Stark of Moat Cailin

    Description

The remaining three towers command the causeway from all sides and enemies must pass between them, the towers were some what revitalized by Brandon Stark. A small curtain wall of roughly ten feet skirts the outside of the "castle", with gates to allow entrance of those friendly the keep's master. Attackers have to face constant fire from the other towers should they attempt to attack any one tower, having had waded through chest deep water and crossing a moat in order to even reach the simple curtain walls.
    - Children's Tower
is tall and slender. It has only half of the crenelations of its crown. Legend has it that the Children of the Forest called upon their Gods here to send the hammer of the waters to smash the Neck.
    - Gatehouse Tower is the only tower which still stands straight. This is the "seat" and "reception hall" of Brandon Stark within the "castle". Inside its walls are decorated with the rusted blades and armor of the first men that were discovered in the reclaiming of the keep.

    - Drunkard's Tower is so named due to its great lean. It stands where the south and west walls once me.
    - Walls, the curtain wall is a simple affair, competently unrelated to the original that once stood. It stands well under 15 feet tall, and serves mainly to hold together the gates leading both north and south. In the stone over the southern gate, there are runes reading "We Guard the North" in the Old Tongue.
    - The "courtyard" is a boggy mess, filled with a small amount of water and the floor made from soft peat that gives way under the weight of a grown man. It is filled with megalithic stones that could not be moved during the reclaiming. Long faded runes and thick layers of moss cover these stones.

Flying from the Vale of Arryn, a raven arrives at Moat Cailin, addressed to Lord Brandon Stark.

Lord Brandon Stark of the Moat,

The blood of the first men runs strongly through the veins of both our houses. I hear you are unmarried. I wish my daughter to be wed to a true son of the first men, and there are none with truer blood than Stark.
Her name is Perra, nine-and-ten years of age, healthy and strong enough to bear many sons. I shall wait for your response.

Drakar and his men arrive, tired from their very long journey from all the way Beyond the Wall. The men have taken to wearing furs over their armor and many sport trophies taken from the loot after the battles with the Thenn. Drakar himself has the monstrous bronze looking rune axe strapped across his back while the new company banner is proudly displayed at the head of the column. They had finally reached the exit from the North after spending nearly three years in the horrible cold.

The keep was made of three prominent towers and a curtain wall about fifteen feet high. Dark green banners depicting a black wolf flew along the walls - so similar to the banners of House Stark.. but different. Halt! Came the call from walls of Moat Cailin. After about ten minutes another man appeared on the walls. Who'd pass the gate?! The man questioned in the Old Tongue, a formality.

Drakar looks to his second in command Stallor who shrugs his shoulders and Drakar growls. Another obstacle to their quest for the warmer south rarely had a Tyroshi ever seem this much snow for so many years.

"I haven't any idea what you said man, but we're mercenaries of Karstark's that have completed our contract. We wish to return south in search of more work."

Ah. The man acknowledged. You carry the stink of Wildlings, but you don't look like them.. and you don't speak like them. He scratched his beard, before descending a simple ladder to the marshy ground and approching somewhat closer to the stranger's column. That's one foul thing you carry here. He gestured to the banner of gore, it reeked of death. Alright.. show me the paperwork that proves you're purpose.. The man was tall and lean, with a wild beard and warm gray eyes. He held a half empty bottle tightly in one hand, while the other was extended to except their proof.

Stallor hands Stark the contract while Drakar speaks.

"We bathed in the blood of many of the fiends. I would be surprised if some of the smell didn't stick!" He nods at the mention of the banner. "The Ice Clans told us it was an accursed symbol feared by many. The company is accursed having been stuck in this snowy wasteland for years so we thought it was a great fit. The Thenn bastards who made it were dead anyway so they didn't need it."

He reads it over while taking a sip from his bottle, his eyes scan over the date once.. twice.. three times. Truth be told he'd stopped listening to Drakar. He pointed to the part of the contract in question. Is this the date you departed? He questioned, without waiting for an answer he had a follow up. Did you meet a man by the name of Benjen north of the Wall? He questioned. About as tall as myself, a queer staff always close at hand, overgrown with hair and moss?

Drakar fingered the handle of his axe as he usually did as he recounts what he knows. "Yes I met the man. We both journeyed to Hardhome together. We both spoke to a warg we had met and then went our separate ways. He went deeper into the forest. This was less than a year ago. Maybe six months or less. Time gets muddled in a place such as this."

He smiled with a hearty laugh. I knew the old bastard wouldn't just go off and die. He handed the contract back to the foreigner for their records. I'll grant you passage south, but my men will watch ya as you go through the keep, cant go around just trusting everyone in times like these. He explained. You've been gone too long to know, so I'll warn ya, Southerners have gone mad, their poor folk are killing foreigners in the streets and their septons have put out orders to capture heretics and bring them for judgement in Oldtown. He placed his hand on his sword's pommel. I'd leave this country if I was you lot. Hell, if this weren't my home I'd leave too.

Drakar hadn't known the old man Benjen had taken off without keeping his family up to datd on what was happening. Curious people these Northmen were. "The old man was quite strong. I didn't think him one to die easily." He accepts the contract which is quickly packed back into the company records. "Thanks for the passage, and the advice. Truly this entire land is crazed. That Beyond the Wall is a mad house and now my return south is met with worse? We truly are accursed as that Wildling said." Drakar shooks his head at that. "We're short on coin so going home isn't an option at this point. We need work and work that pays well right now. Beyond the Wall had plenty of those Wildlings to fight, but precious little gold to put in our coffers. You know of anywhere who needs our services Stark?"

A small band of Crannogmen appear on the long bridge to Moat Cailin. The guard's were startled, for they had suddenly appeared in the middle of the bridge from within the fog. A man shouted up to the guards, asking to see Lord Brandon.

The men on guard nodded silently, they'd become used to Crannogmen coming here and there. Soon the gate lowered and the party was welcomed into the small courtyard. They were directed to one of the towers, the one that was least crooked and inside they found the small court of the drunken wolf. Many artifacts discovered while dredging the place where this once great keep stood were adorning the walls alongside animal skins and heads. Brandon say on a throne of lizard lion bones, he was already deep into his cup. Welcome. He began lazily. What brings the men of house Reed to the Moat?

Eddard Reed stepped forwards to address the Lord Brandon. "My father feels that our two houses are the greatest line of defence the North could ever have. House Reed defends the Neck, while House Stark defends Moat Cailin.

Father feels he has neglected working closely with you to keep the Neck totally secure. Knowing that Moat Cailin has only a small levy, he wishes to offer you two to three hundred Crannogmen to supplement your garrison. We are expert trackers, hunters and archers. With a small force of our bowmen, Moat Cailin would be even more secure than it already is, making the North the most secure Kingdom in Westeros, save for the Vale or Dorne."

Brandon nodded. We've too many men to even camp within the walls of Moat Cailin, once this keep was invincible now it is a shadow of its former self. He replied sipping his mug. I already employ many natives of the Neck as archers, but we can always use more Crannogmen as scouts though, to warn us when men are coming up from the south. He licked his teeth cautiously. Tell me is there anything else you'd like to discuss, Reed? These people were different, they reminded him of his uncle who spent thirty years apart from human society, 6 of them North of the Wall.
