Default Siege tricks - show yours!

What are you guys favorite strategies when besieging heavily defended enemy settlements?

As Chaos, I've found that because of the great firepower of the towers, besieging settlements can be extremely arduous because of the constant shelling. If I'm not taking settlements by the easier method of simply stacking up two armies or more on it and auto-resolving(which I've found to usually be the easiest), I think my main strategies revolve mainly around just zerg-rushing the walls with towers.

Hellcannons are really slow at destroying towers, so I have long since abandoned any notion of trying to win an artillery war against any empire castle.

What about you guys? Have you found any impressive ways to deal with settlements in Warhammer more effectively?

You can rush up to the walls and hide in a few small zones where the towers cannot shoot. Just pan over the tower with your mouse, you can see its firing arc.

All in all, the towers are insanely strong, and absolutely force you to get down to business quickly.. but this works both ways. Walled settlements are easy and fun to defend

Wall settlements limit the strategy of the attack to essentially rushing the walls. That isn't a good thing.

Hopefully mods can change this. It is one of the blemishes on what is now CA best release.

Siege tricks? I guess waiting for the battle timer to count down like in R2 does not apply anymore I definitely need to play a Warhammer siege.

Vampire Faction 6 siege towers grave guards and two vargulf destroying the doors then releasing my cavalry lol. Then 2 terrorgheist for range unit. Just for fun I build a lot of siege towers.

Seems I'm not the only one who think the Towers are a little bit too strong. You'd think it was the garrison with the terrain advantage that made walled settlements a formidable obstacle - not towers of eternal doom, lol

I sort of miss the more methodic sieges of Total War: Medieval 2.

    Usually i do the same

It's a lot more easier the automatic resolve when you have enough armies.. yesterday i played the siege battle on the vampire capital with two full armies of the empire, i won, but it was a massacre.. i've lost a lot of units, and the artillery didn't seemed to be really effective against towers and walls (3 cannons, 1 mortar, e 1 fire cannon) , the door gone down pretty quickly. Defensive towers are so powerfoul, it's hard and challenging, but it's also fun to risk a lot to take big cities! I guess we have to focus all the artillery on a single point to deal good damage.

I just use an agent that can break walls.

Then I have two basic plans I put in motion.

    1) I set all my cheap fodder infantry to assault the walls with ladders, we need to stop the towers shooting.

    2) I slam my biggest and heaviest infantry into the hole(s) in the wall. If I have anything that can batter down the gates, I will do that and open a second front there, or try to slide cavalry through to tear up archers or artillery in the back.

The fodder infantry is just sent onto the walls to die, and to tie up any enemy infantry on the walls for as long as possible. The heavy hitters blast through the gaps in the walls. I like to use monstrous critters if possible because they actually create space for more infantry to pile in, so we're talking, Crypt Horrors, Dragon Ogres, Trolls. Basically anything that knocks back and has a decent unit size.

Spam crypt horrors; rush the gates; win battles.

I had a friend send me a mod he was working on that adjusted deployment zones. He may have erm... broke things a bit.

I was able to vanguard deploy my dwarves INSIDE the city.

Sadly I don't think that's a sound strategy for the normal game.

U can cheese most towers easily only thing u need is a strong lord and a couple long range cannons.

position all ur units outside of tower range

put hero and cannon in range of one tower with the lord waay up in front.

tower shoots lord the entire time and with good items and stats he should take very little damage. Just let cannons destroy the towers in peace. after first tower goes down u can then angle ur cannons to take out all the other towers without the lord as bait.

Have a look at "LegendofTotalWar" youtube video. He uses indeed the lord to draw fire (from one tower) and a cannon to kill the tower. After that he uses crossbows to kill off a lot of others. The AI will not sally out so it is really possible to kill a lot and lot of groups with your missile units.
I also breach a wall (with cannon) and stack my handgunners there to kill off any armoured units who nicely stay in front of the breach until they break.

Many times I have won a siege battle (against the AI) with this tactics and sometimes I won without entering the city :-) Thanks LegendofTotalWar

I find getting one ram and 4 (2 clicks) of towers work wonders. Push ranged units up to soak damage from towers, and use an arc firing artillery (or flying units for undead) to kill ranged units beyond the walls. As for the walls, I find putting 1 melee on each side of the gate works, along with where there are three areas of siege locations on the walls to place a tower, than a ladder (just click with foot soldiers onto the wall) then another tower. (Make sure your infantry are in FRONT of the towers to distract enemy ranged towers from hurting your siege towers) This way, the AI will spam towards the ladder guy in the middle section of the wall, meanwhile your siege towers come up on either side and overwhelm then. Meanwhile you got your artillery (or flying units) able to hit them. Will post a video or screenshot later to better explain, did this all the time with the other TW games that allow siege towers and ladders, works well for me

I find battering rams work best, unlike the siege towers the defense turrets dont attack them directly, instead they kill the unit pushing them. Once the gate is battered down, a monster like a troll or a high level agent or lord can smash through the defenders quickly so that units like Demigryphs can rush in, surround, and crush the enemy

I guess we are all re-discovering how painful sieges are. They are supposed to be a big price to pay ...

As for the towers I don't know if nerfing is the solution but perhaps slowing down the rate of fire could help.

When looking at a castle, on the far right or left there is usually one of the gates and to the left (or right) is a small section of wall before the impassible boundry, and a tower. I always send my strongest tower and units right there as the rest hit else where. Why? For whatever reason this section is always left undefended or very lightly defended. Whenever I pan around I always see my units there just standing there. Suddenly they just spill onto the ground and help fight at the gate.

I always send monstrous infantry at the gate, all of them, this A: gets them out of range of towers and B: gets them into the castle quickly. IF playing as the Empire...this tactic isn't a thing until late game when you can shoot down the gate and flood it with demigryphs, steam tanks and greatswords.

Also I always send my lord and any captains/wizards/wights right up next to the gate to get out of the firing arc. THis doesn't work as well if they have a flying mount. They may be floating in front of a line of handgunners...watch out.

Becareful where you place your soldiers. You may get them out of the firing arc of the towers but they may be blocking your siege towers from reaching the wall. Don't make a mistake in this micromangement.

I have not had an issue with the towers like some have. Plenty die on the walls though. I think the most fun race to siege with is the VC because of all the flying units. For other factions I use the range units to attack the enemies on the walls, not the towers or gate. I have had a fair amount of luck with 6 siege towers and no ladders. If I do use ladders it is important to move the infantry close to the walls then tell them to use ladders otherwise they won't run.

Also like others said, try and avoid getting shot. The towers have a long range of fire but it is narrow and has blind spots.

I usually bring overwhelming numbers, so the ratio is 6:1 or so for me, and then i just autoresolve.
