Icon3 TWC Total War Warhammer benchmark thread - last updated: 26.12.2016

    Greetings TWC members!

This thread is going to be the 4th iteration of TWC exclusive Total War benchmarking to help you to find out what you get and expect for your bucks.

Reminder: It is not a thread for hardware advice. If you are looking for this I would like to pass you on to more specific thread by HigoChumbo over here.

So why benchmarking games instead just playing them?
Some think benchmarking is no good but for some few those enjoy putting all their eggs (not guts) in one basket or simply showing off other people .
This can be the case but nevertheless this thread should not be considered to be a place for nerds only, having the most potent hardware around, but should be also a place for all others having weaker and more common hardware setups. Also their results are much more important, because they are quite the majority of common of Total War players.

That said: Benchmarking can be fun for everyone regardless the hardware setup you have, to compare your individual performance to others, and often enough find improvements.

As the game is still unreleased and also the preparations for this thread will need some time to setup worthy comparisons I hope you can forgive me posting this as a placeholder.

Here are some quite vague benchmarks I've found for Warhammer, but I am confident that the ones we'll gather here will be more meaningful as they were with Shogun 2 (post #5 and #6), Rome 2 (post #10) and especially with this specific thread dedicated to Attila.

As always I will try to find the easiest way possible for everyone to participate so it shall and hopefully will not fail just because you aren't a computer expert.

Have a look at this thread again in a couple of days for detailed instructions. If you are willing to participate or interested into the results don't forget to subscribe.

Prior to start bothering with the benchmarking process make sure to update your drivers:

The links will redirect you on a german site but the drivers are multilanguage:

    AMD drivers for GPUs:
    HD 7700 to R9/RX Series,
    HD 7700M to R9 M (Mobility / Notebooks)
    A-Series APUs (CPU integrated GPUs)
    Pro Duo

    https://www.computerbase.de/download...imson-edition/
    Current version: 16.12.2 (20th December 2016)

    HD 5000 – HD 7600 Series
    HD 5000M/6000M (Mobility)

    https://www.computerbase.de/download...imson-edition/
    Current version: 16.2.1 (1th March 2016)

    AMD CPU / Chipset drivers:
    https://www.computerbase.de/download...ipsatztreiber/
    Current version: 16.12.1 (8th December 2016)

    Nvidia drivers for GPUs:
Geforce 400-700/900 series, Geforce 10xx seriesGeforce 400-900M series (Notebooks)

    https://www.computerbase.de/download...force-treiber/
    Current version: 376.33 (14th December 2016)

    8 + 9/100 – 300 Serie
    8M + 9M/100M – 300M

    https://www.computerbase.de/download...force-treiber/
    Current version: 342.01 (14th December 2016)

Intel drivers for iGPUs (CPU integrated GPUs):
    https://www.computerbase.de/download...grafiktreiber/
    various versions: 4-6th Gen 20.09.15.4501 (6th September 2016)

    Explainations:
2nd Gen - Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs
3rd Gen - Intel Ivy Bridge CPUs
4th Gen - Intel Haswell CPUs
5th Gen - Intel Broadwell CPUs
6th Gen - Intel Skylake CPUs
7th Gen - Kaby Lake CPUs (upcoming)

    Intel CPU / Chipset drivers:
    https://www.computerbase.de/download...ipsatztreiber/
    Current version: 10.1.1.14 (23th February 2016)

It is important to update chipset and GPU drivers for optimal performance.

    How to benchmark properly:

    0. Check / Update your drivers (see above)

    1. General rules before benchmarking:
    - only use the given presets, do not alter the settings manually to make the results comparative! Do not use the "optimal settings" for the benchmark either!

    - Warhammer doesn't save any log files - again- for the benchmarking process. If you got a "downgrade message" due to insufficient video memory please do not submit this results as it is not comparable - it has individual downgrades
Instead pick the next lower preset. Only use unlimited video memory if you use an inbuild on die CPU like AMD Axxx CPU, Intel HDxxxx etc.

    - You do not need to run all presets if your machine is not capable enoug (3-4 GB VRAM needed for extreme quality or manually maxed out quality btw).
It would be helpful enough if you can submit at least one preset where no "downgrade massage" message appeared. Refer above.

    - never use unlimited memory options if you have a laptop card or discrete card in your PC.

    - keep your Windows updated, including the so-called "optional" updates, they contain non security related but needed updates, you need to enable them in the Windows Update settings.

    - I am aware that the Attila benchmark still does not reflect the ingame performance that much as it still misses massive close combat situations. However it is the only tool we have to get objective comparisons. Please do not post "in-game" performance figures here, and just use the benchmark.

    2. How to obtain, use and submit cpu-z.txt results
    - results without CPU-Z logs won't be included in the original post
    - Download CPU-Z. CPU-Z is free and available here: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html
    - Install CPU-Z. It does not contain any adware or malware.
    - To create a cpu-z.txt file open CPU-Z > open the "About" Tab > Save Report (TXT) > Save the file where you like and can find it later.

    - How to enclose the a cpu-z.txt logfile in your post:

There are several options for that:
    a. use a cloud / uploading service like Onedrive etc
    b. use TWC attach file feature
    c. use pastebin.com (no account required)
    d. write me an e-mail with the logfile attached to: twcbenchmarks@chynet.de, don't forget to include your forum name please.

    3. Temporarily needed system changes:

    - set Windows Energy settings to "performance" to avoid a temporary downclocking of your CPU / RAM

    - disable all unneccerary processes and (system tray) applications, especially webbrowsers like chrome and Antivirus programs like Windows Defender in Windows 8.1 / 10 or Microsoft Security Essentials in Windows 7.

    4. Rules how to post your results:

When submitting a benchmark result, please state the following:
    - minimum FPS
    - maximum FPS
    - average FPS (at least)
    - include a cpu-z.txt log, refer above
    - name the preset in use
    - don't forget to include your in-game resolution
    - if you use Windows 10 determine the build number by entering "winver" in the search bar

    5. Example / Template:

    Intel Core i7 2600K, 4.6 GHz, 16 GB RAM 1600 MHz CL 9-9-9-24, EVGA 670 FTW, Windows 10 pro 64bit (14393.105), resolution 1920x1080p, no SLI

maxed out settings (refer screenshot for correct settings, needs at least 3-4 GB VRAM), optional for high end computers and / or experienced users
    min FPS: xx
    max FPS: xx
    avg FPS: xx

Ultra preset (needs 3-4 GB VRAM):
    min FPS: xx
    max FPS: xx
    avg FPS: xx

    High preset:
    min FPS: xx
    max FPS: xx
    avg FPS: xx

    Medium preset:

Warhammer stats still missing due not existent benchmark mode.

    Testing Environment:
    Intel i7 2600k @ 4,6 GHz (or as shown)

    16 GB DDR3 1600 MHz 9-9-9-24 1T, 1.30 Volts
Zotac GTX 970 AMP! Core Extreme Edition
    Windows 10 pro 64bit (10586.318)
    Nvidia Geforce 368.22

Graphic settings: 1920x1080,I've manually set all graphics setting to the lowest possible, because low preset does not set everything to low. I considered that having lowest graphical settings should usually prevent GPU bottleneck situations. As we have seen this in former tests with Attila, even mid presets had still some GPU bottleneck.

    Shogun 2 / Rome 2 / Attila

Often enough people claim that Total War does not scale well when having more CPU cores available. This is not the whole truth. There might be some occassions where it would be feasible to have a more linear scalation per core, so all cores should be equally loaded and utilized. While we can see the named TW games do make use of having more cores and they are gaining a lot of performance, especially with Attila.

I just want to highlight one result here:
if you run Attila with 2 CPU cores we will see see a 91-96% performance increase over having just one core. Hyperthreading (HT) will make a difference of about 5% compared to having no hyperthreading.

On the other hand if you compare the performance having 4 cores and hyperthreading off the difference is more than 3 times the performance for the average framerate compared to just having one core.

Of course I know we have to take all TW benchmarks with some grain of salt, as the true CPU intensive operations just like battles aren't (much) included in the graphical benchmarks. Still the results speak a clear language, also with no or less battle scenes. These Total War games does benefit from multicore CPUs. Unfortunately I cannot test the behaviour with 6 cores or more, yet.

There is one thing I found is very interesting in particular: Rome 2 has some battle scenes in the benchmark while the Shogun 2 GPU benchmark offers none, still Shogun 2 outperforms Rome 2 regularly when it comes to CPU core scalation.

Investigating the direct HT improvements, we can see that Intel Hyperthreading will only make big impacts if Total War games are bottlenecked by CPU core count.
As soon 2 cores are available the effective gains are pretty much neglible. It would be interesting to see how this turns out with Warhammer.

These graphs show framerates. More exactly the scalation of framerates for each individual game when you enable more cores and / or hyperthreading.
Same with the previous results you will recognize that TW games seem to need AT LEAST 2 cores to accelerate and even providing 4 cores won't be a bad thing. Hence, as soon you have more than 2 cores the impact of hyperthreading is again negible. So the rule of thumb that an i5 is sufficient enough for Total War seems to be still valid.

    next to come:

    CPU speed scalation (3.5 GHz / 4,6 GHz / 5,2 GHz)
    Warhammer figures (hopefully)

Oh my, I think we have to delay this thread or maybe close it at all... I have build a second computer and already put some hours into benchmarking the older games like Shogun 2, Rome 2 and Attila to have current figures on a same Windows / driver state. And what happened now?!

    - no DX12 mode yet
    - I cannot find any benchmark button in the graphical options. I could excuse this, as also the current Tomb Raider delivered a benchmark and DX12 later on but I am not confident if this will happen before I may not be anymore able to return the game, as I bought it solely for benchmarking.
    - last but not least there is no Nvidia driver with optimizations for Warhammer yet but CA announced they are working on it. To be honest not even for Rome 2 and Attila there was a driver gaining sustainable performance

this is madness... releasing announcements about a DX12 compatible game without DX12 support, reminds me a bit of Shogun 2 where this took about 4 weeks to happen to work with DX11, because they needed time for optimizations. But no benchmark anymore... I am speechless. I have (still) low confidence that they will patch DX12 along with a benchmark at a later time. Otherwise I've wasted about 26 bucks for the game and additional 120 € for additional hardware to make better comparisons.

I too think they will release it along with DX12 patch.
So far the game runs very good. FPS 50-60 while zoomed in but at the same time they are using lower unit sizes for TWW. At ultra average unit size is 120 not 160 like in previous games.

Yes I am very surprised Totalheadache, I think they have added benchmarking with Shogun 2 and proceed to include this in Rome 2 and Attila. I do not see a point to remove it in a Warhammer most of all as it would be technically most interesting to see how good a 64bit Total War game and DX12 (in future) will deal out.

Somehow it feels like no other mind this lacking feature more than myself.

According to this site, whose authors were able to get a pre-release DX12 build, say it has a Benchmarking tool (the DX11 does not however). Their tests for performance looks good, I hope that whenever DX12 support drops those numbers hold up.

    Yeah, so no benchmark, lol.

For me it seems performance is maybe a little bit better than in Attila but it seems that CA downgraded the Ultra settings (clever move, lol), so it's difficult to compare.

Here is a performance test which implies that CA was essentially lying about any multi-threading improvements in DX11 mode. I also think that there are minimum improvements in multicore usage in DX11 at best:
    http://www.dsogaming.com/pc-performa...ance-analysis/

I also think that CA can't actually do much about it in DX11 because of the draw call bottleneck between CPU and GPU in DX11. Only in DX12 we can expect some major improvements in that regard (esp. zoomed in performance should be much better). And DX12 should also bring some improvements to NVIDIA hardware because the draw call bottleneck also affects NVIDIA GPUs. I can't imagine that just Async compute will boost framerates more than 10% on AMD cards. Most of the performance advantage of DX12 should come from better multi-threading which should result in better GPU utilization.

The move to 64 bit improved load times (quite a bit in parts, especially if u have a lot of RAM) but essentially didn't do anything for battle performance (as expected).

Yeah was disappointed in the no benchmark tool, but if it is added in that makes sense. Just seems to me they pretty much made the game for the future and not present day dx11. Which I am fine with, only if it really does get a performance boost when dx12 hits. Personally I rather have it early then wait for dx12 but I feel as a game developer/producer waiting for dx12 would have been ideal for first impressions.

If there's a way to share a replay, someone could record one, come up with a standard camera script to follow (e.g. zoom in/out for x seconds), then upload the replay file and the script (e.g. youtube) so that we can compare results. We'd probably have to use FRAPS to logs framerates.

As far as performance goes, it's predictably running very well on my i7 6700 and GTX 970 Strix. I used this Min/Max Comparison video to gauge which settings had the largest performance/image quality impact to come to a compromise. According to that video screen space reflections, shadows, and anti-aliasing are relatively heavy performance hitters as the other settings had little to no performance impact on that test rig. That said, I'm running maxed out except for those settings: Screen Space Reflections = OFF, Shadows = Ultra, and Anti-aliasing = MLAA.
