It took some time before all great lords of the Reach arrived at Highgarden for the election day. The first to arrive was lord Randyl Tarly, punctual as always, and the last lord Mathis Rowan who had duties at the borders prior. Once the feast started everyone was in the mood. The war with the Greyjoys was over, so they took the liberty of having some fun. They were drinking, laughing, telling jokes, talked past and future battles and making promises and threats Willas knew they couldn't keep.
"Listen to me people! I, lord Hobber Redwyne of house Redwyne...!"
"You already said Redwyne... ", lady Olenna replied.
"Wha, what?"
"You don't say your last name if you're going to declare from which house you come you idiot. Now go on..."
"Well... as I was saying. I, Hobber of the house Redwyne, promise to you.... if we face the kingslayer at the battlefield, I shall kill him myself!"
Everyone burst to laugh though, they all knew the Redwyne brothers did not shine on the battlefield, but they were both strangely overconfident.

After some more promises and war talk, it came time for the jokes. Willas surprisingly liked them, since they weren't at his account this time.
"Do you guys know why Northerners don't suffer from alzheimers? Cause the North REMEMBERS! HAHAHA", *laughs
"Hey, hey everyone... how many Targaryens does it take to change a lightbulb? THREE! HAHA" *more laughs
"Oh you gotta hear this one my lords! Why did Catelyn Stark hate the bastard so much? Cause she had a STONE HEART AHAHHA!", nobody laughed though, "Sigh... showfags"

As they were having fun, though, Willas noted, nobody was drunk, they all behaved themselves for the most part, ate with a spoon and fork as it befits the noble and elegant southorn lords. There were laughs, but no shouts or screams. No wine was spilled and no fights were started. True lords of the South, Willas thought, and he admired them for it.
"Only a fool makes promises he cannot keep.", Randyl Tarly replied sharply to more Redwyne bickering, "Look at our lord Willas for example. He promised to us that we would thrive through the Ironborn invasion and we did. I did not believe it at first, but we won, we drove them back! He might not be a fighter anymore, but he is the true lord! My vote goes to him!"
"Oh, oh have we started already? I wanna vote I wanna vote!", young Rickard Mullendore, son of late Martyn Mullendore who died defending the Arbor, was very enthusiastic about his first acts as new lord of Uplands.
"Not now Rickard, behave yourself!", his mother said.

Willas was seated at his father's old chair, surrounded by his brothers, Garlan and Loras. After the feast was over, they all promoted themselves and sold their plans to the lords. Both Loras and Garlan promised them the war with the Lannisters and all the might of Westerlands, though through different ways of obtaining them, Willas noted.
Loras recklessly wanted a direct fight, while Garlan, even though he was just as good on the field, thought they should wait for Dorne to fall and join up forces with their king Aegon.
Loras also promised better military educational system, everyone, even the lowborn would be able to attend military schools or join war training camps with secured roofs over their heads and two meals a day if they work good. He also wanted to lower the taxes, an idea which every lord liked instantly, due to their increasing wealth from trading with Targaryens and after liberating entire South, most notably the Arbor.
Garlan was more harsh, he would have every able bodied man from the Reach go through several months to a year of training before being released back to their homes and sworn to answer the call to war when needed. Randyl Tarly liked the idea, though he counter-argumented it with a statement that many would try and avoid and escape such harsh regime which would hurt their advantage at numbers. Garlan agreed, but he considered that 20k well trained, armored and disciplined men were more useful than a 100k levies who barely ever held a spear in their lives.
Judging by their two speeches, the reponse was mixed for the two brothers. They all liked what they heared but didn't want to judge anything before the last contender spoke, so most eyes were closely looking at Willas once his brothers finished. He stood up and said:
"My lords, my ladies. I won't promise more riches or glory or more lands because I am not sure if we can achieve that. Defending our lands from the Ironborn was one thing, we had the advantage, but facing a fully raised, trained and supplied Lannister army will be the toughest challenge we ever faced. We have some very capable commanders here, and good field warriors as well, many of us have proven ourselves several times on the field... but a good lord, a TRUE lord as lord Tarly complimented me, needs to look at every possible angle, solution or option. Is war with the Lannisters what we really need? What have they done to us? They haven't harmed us or threatened us. They are enemies of the crown but our noble king doesn't say much when asked about a potential threat in the Westerlands. I have no love for the Lannisters and I would like nothing more then to see someone put them in their place, but am I the person to do that? I am no war leader, not anymore, I just want what's best for our people. We liberated our lands, let us rebuild them, make them better, make the Reach more beautiful than before. Let's make Reach GREAT AGAIN! I don't want any of you to die fighting a war that nobody asked for. I want you to LIVE and see this country growing.... growing STRONG. Let us live for a while, until a call to arms is heared again. I say, let our king decide where our armies are needed and where not. My brothers gave some very interesting proposals about our inner politics. But here is mine..."
He detailed them his entire plan on finances, the strengthening on the borders, shared a mutual agreement with Loras about an educational system, proposed a new way of taxing and new trade routes to Dorne after it is completely anexxed by the dragons, and more.

The time for votes came up. Each lord stood up and shouted a vote. It was obvious after the very first men who gave shouts that Willas would win. Most of them were for Willas. Loras gained the support of Redwynes, Garlan from Hightowers and Rowans, but Willas was backed by the Tarlies, Oakhearts, Meadows, Merryweathers, Peakes and several others. Mullendores didn't cast their votes though cause young Rickard insisted that he voted for himself. When Loras tried to explain to him calmly that he couldn't do that, Rickard kicked him in the balls so hard Loras couldn't get up for the next five minutes.
"Well, it's not like he was using those for any good.... ", Garlan replied
"GARLAN!",
"What?!", Garlan asked
"Too soon... ", Willas replied.

After the voting was done and the result was clear, Willas was not particullary happy. He was suprirsed actually, though he realised that many of these lords thought of him highly after his defense mechanism agains the Ironborn worked. He knew better than that though, he didn't win that war, Lannisters won it for them, they just survived long enough for it to happen.
"HEY HEY GUYS, LISTEN TO THIS ONE: A Tyrell, a Baratheon, a Lannister and a Stark all walk into a bar and the bartender says 'Whass dis? Som sorta bar jouk?' HAHAHA", lord Fossoway began..
"We're finished with the jokes, sit your arse down!", Olenna replied
Randyl Tarly came up to his feet to honor their leader!
"TO LORD WILLAS! Our lord, our leader, our friend! GROWING STRONG!", Randyl Tarly shouted!
"GROWING STRONG! GROWING STRONG! GROWING STRONG!"
