After learning of the bloodless fall of Storm's End Lord Commander Harlan found himself reanalysing the outcome of the war. Instead of wasting their strength against the greatest bastion in Westeros, the Blackfyres had won themselves the Baratheons. Even if that was temporary the damage was done.

"Your Grace, if you have a moment."

Aerys was standing at the balcony in his solar, his chestplate tossed carelessly on the desk. He stood in his red and black scale shirt, looking at the tens of thousands of loyalist troops mustering from all across the Crownlands, mustering to his call. His sword sits in the corner of the room, resting against the wall. He had read the report of Baratheon's surrender, and while he was angry, he wasn't angry at Baratheon, he had a feeling he had surrendered at sword point. The Monstrous had slain Ormund after all. He sighed lightly, thinking of the large and ferocious Stormlander, he had been with him when he'd died and he still felt shock that such a man could be killed.

He started lightly when he heard Harlan talk. He turned and addressed him. "Lord Commander, I always have time for the Leader of my Kingsguard. What do you need?"

Ensuring that the door behind him was firmly shut Harlan had taken a knee, rising when merited. He had refrained from appearing in full garb, instead settling on white leather, thick shoulderguards fashioned in to coiled lions, black on a bedding of yellow fringe. He had always considered it counter to what the guard stood for, bearing heraldric memory of his former House. And yet, even now, he could not truly throw it away.

"Your Grace, I thank you for this chance before events take take to mount. I have served with a white cloak on my shoulders for longer than I have worn any other colour, perhaps for too many years. I have tried to protect the kings I serve, faithful to the oath I swore and yet it is I who continue to age. What if, instead of a shield I am no more than a blade? I have failed in giving my life in exchange for your family and yet none who committed the regicide long survived their Grace's fall."

Collecting his thoughts, the man wetted his lips, feeling the years heavy in the copper taste found in the ravines of dried flesh.

"I feel as if this war could be settled with a single well-placed strike."

Aerys nodded slowly, before turning back to the balcony. He gestured for Harlan to come and join him. Once Harlan was beside him, he asked; "Ser Harlan, what do you see mustering in those fields?"

"Your Grace, the pretender also fields an army, tested by some of your father's most leal lords." The knight lowered his voice, tensing the water as he spoke with the younger man. "And his men are marching on the back of victories in Stepstones and now Storm's End. Even should the monster be defeated, what guarantee is there that he will be brought low in the same instant?" Returning to a knee, the commander continued. "Blackfyre's name is legendary among many of the smallfolk, his ties still in memory among many lords. House Peake is only the most blundering of the pretender's supporters. What I suggest is," he struggled over the word, "dishonourable." At the utterance of the word the Lord Commander bowed even lower. "The Blackfyres rely on their symbols for their claim. A sigil. A sword. A...crown." Hesitatingly, Harlan looked up at the new king. "The kingsguard is sworn to protect the king with their lives. Maelys thinks himself the true king. If members of the kingsguard were to agree with him, to join him, carrying with them a Targaryen crown, what choice did he have but to accept us in to his camp? To deny the symbol of legitimacy we would present would harm him as well, Your Grace." Still on his knee, Harlan found himself speaking words that tasted of, milk curdled. "I served Maekar, Your Grace. I served Aegon. I cannot let more good men, good men beneath both banners die when there is hope of another way."

"My dear son." She gave a warm, maternal smile and kissed him on the cheek. She then held the note aloft "You wouldn't even come and visit me in order to make such a request?" She went to pour herself some wine, watering it down significantly. "I've come to offer some counsel. It will be your decision to heed it or not." She took a seat on a cushioned chair, crossing her legs.

"I offer two pieces of advice. The first regards taxes. It is your prerogative as King to levy a tax, of course. Taxes keep the realm healthly; they pay for the armies that keep us safe and other Royal institutions. The logic behind their existence is obvious. Not all of your subjects, I'm afraid, are logical. They are only aware that they have several fewer pennies to buy ale with at the taverns, or a grumbling in their gut. Many of them will never see a battlefield, but less money in their hands will affect them nonetheless. So then, how do we make it seem more fair? I propose this: exempt the lords who send a force of troops to fight for you from the tax. Instead, propose a war indemnity upon those who support Maelys. This will make the sting of defeat for his supporters felt doubly when they lose, and they will think twice about supporting him." Ahw took a sip of wine and let the counsel sink in.

"Lastly, about your mission to the Summer Isles. I counsel against it. The capital is a lucrative source of trade taxation, and it can be sued to secure loyalties and more troops for the cause. Offer it as you would any other commodity, as part of a bargain to strengthen ties to the Throne."

Aerys blinked, while being a clever young man, his experiance had shown through, this was certainly a clever idea to put into actions. He nodded thoguhtfully, liking the proposal. "This is a wonderful idea, mother. Thank you."

Aerys goes to his balcony and looks across the tens of thousands of bowmen. "Summer Isles gold is not what I seek. A huge portion of my army is made of bowmen. I desire their timber to give our forces an edge against his horse. Meet the Bastard on a hill and slaughter them with arrows from a longer range as they come up it. Or even a slope would do. But I respect your advice, Mother, if you still advise this then I shalk heed you."

She took another ginger sip of the wine. "You have the heart of a warrior, I shall never fault you for that. To field more spears is a wise tactical decision. But once Maelys is beaten those men will disperse and you will be left with a fractured Kingdom regardless of the outcome of any abttle, commerce can help to heal that afterwards, and for the time being will fill the royal treasury. As for cavalry, you can also fight fire with fire. My sellswords will arrive before the next moon, they will be yours to command. They number one thousand horsemen, and their lives matter very little in the grander scheme."

Aerys nodded, he understood her advice and agreed with it. "With your cavalry, as well as the regiment of the King's Cavalry I have ordered raised, as well as our Dragonstone Knights and militias we will have enough horse to combat his. Whom do you suggest trading with?

"Truthfully, I am not sure. The North has offered nothing, neither representative or tax, the Reach remains silent and the Vale distant. Dorne has made no stance clear, but I imagine they will be loyalists, considering Lewyn Martell is a member of my Kingsguard. The Tullys have pledged us their arms, although they have not yet arrived. I worry about the Westerlands most of all, Tytos Lannister is weak and there is a chance his son, along with many other Western nobles, are held captive by Blackfyre. I have no idea what they wil do."

Lord Sarric Swann arrived at the Red Keep. He never liked the capital. It was too crunched together and smelled something awful. He had intended to attempt to see the King in the Great Hall, bit opted for the Holdfast. He awaited to see if entry were possible, still clad in his armor from the march from Stonehelm.

Aerys sat down, pouring himself some wine, and topping up his mother's goblet while he did so. He gestured for a servant to bring some food in, and a platter of cold meats and bread was soon delivered. "I already have trade with the Arbor, their gold, fruit and tax will go far for our efforts. I had been debating trading with the Riverlands, both to reward their loyalty and to provide us with the grain needed to supply our armies. The Vale would indeed be a strong ally, and it would secure our Northern flank, but I distrust these Valemen, they sent nobody to the Coronation, and provided no reasoning for doing so. The North has the excuse of distance, the Vale does not.

I was thinking of introducing Sellsword Contracting Laws, what do you think?"

Aerys stood silently. He was shocked, but also pleased by the offer. He was glad to know of the loyalty of his Lord Commander. not every man would offer to break his beliefs for a king. He felt he needed to ask the question though. "What if you fail? What if the Usurper lives, has a Targaryen Crown, Blackfyre, the hostages, a member of my Kingsguard and a tarnish on House Targaryen's honour?"

Harlan nodded, finding himself unwilling to contribute further to that line of thought. It was not because he truly cared: there were lords who would accept him for Blackfyre or for Targaryen, but instead because if he truly did this act, then his loyalty, his desires, would be called in to question.

"That is why it could not just be me alone. I would have to have support from my other brothers, men whose families are not known for their love of the throne. Together we would have the ability to treat with the Stormlords, men who may still harbour ill intent towards the pretender. A physical presence would be better served than a single unsupported blade."

He took in a heavy breath.

"The tarnish of honour would be ours alone, Your Grace. We would he declared traitors, stripped of rank and privilege in order to make the facade believable. As for the crown, when his armies are crushed, Maelys will sell it to a peasant to buy himself a grave."
