Default Goldentooth, Seat of House Lefford

The fortress of Goldentooth spans across the gap created by one of the valleys into the Westerlands proper, blocking the route to all that House Lefford would not allow freely through their gates. The valley is host to the River Road, which travels from King's Landing through the Riverlands to reach the mountains of the Westerlands, causing the town and fortress of Goldentooth to see considerable mercantile traffic. Behind the imposing walls that block the valley, deep gold mines produce a steady flow of the valuable ore that the Westerlands is famed for, making the Leffords among the richest families in the Westerlands.

Donnel rode wearily up the winding path that lead to the gates of Goldentooth, his brother Ryon following behind. In a scene repeated outside every holdfast in the Westerlands, a tired and battered handful of Knights rode through the gates where, weeks previously, hundreds had marched proudly out of. The brothers had been part of Lord Baratheon's reserve of heavy cavalry in the battle and were thus spared the destruction of the Westerlands forces in the catastrophic defeat.

Inside they were rushed to the family solar, wherein Lord Harmund sat with his second son, Godric. Neither had marched to war, Harmund for his advanced age and Godric for his horseriding injury.

"Tell me everything." said Harmund with a sympathetic, and slightly worried, tone. After all, his son and Donnel's father, Raymar, had not returned himself. Was he dead?

"It was a slaughter." said Donnel in a resigned tone, taking a deep breath, "The Blackfyres broke through between Tywin Lannister's forces and the Crownlanders and trapped our men against a marshland wood. Their heavy horse sallied through the gap and intercepted our reserve, where I was, preventing us plugging the gap. We were pushed back, and only a few Westerlands knights made it back to our lines."

    "Your father?" asked Harmund nervously.

"I don't know." came the reply, with a hint of anger, "He was part of the break out attempt when they first charged but wasn't when they reached the lines, I'm told. Somewhere in the fighting he fell out of the formation. He's dead or a captive of Blackfyre. Tywin Lannister is missing as well, and Ormund Baratheon was killed in the reserve."

Harmund pondered for a moment, then slid a thin string of parchment over to Donnel. A raven's message.

"Maelys has landed in the Stormlands." said Harmund seriously, "He has moved quickly following his victory, and if Tywin is alive but captive, Tytos won't dare risk moving against him. We await word from the Rock as to whether the Westerlands will attend Aerys' coronation as a result, and on whether Maelys has made any demands or statements implying he holds Tywin alive."

    "Jaeherys..." started Donnel.

"Dead. Heart attack, or so the official line goes, found dead in his bed the day after word came from the Stepstones." interrupted Harmund. He rose to his feet and paced round to Donnel, his cane clacking on the floor as he moved forwards.

"It may not be what you wish to hear Donnel, but until your father's fate is ascertained for certain, you are now the Heir to Goldentooth."

"What of Serra and Kyra? They saw us return and will have noticed father's absence." chipped in Ryon.

"I shall deal with them. That will require some delicacy. For now, rest, I will inform you if we hear from the Rock."

The two departed to their chambers, to be drawn a bath and then to rest. Both had been on the move constantly since they first set out to Lannisport to embark for the Stepstones weeks ago.

A raven arrives at Golden Tooth, carrying a letter sealed with the sigil of House Lannister.

    To Lord Harmund Lefford,

I hereby request your presence at Casterly Rock as soon as a horse can carry you here, for matters concerning the Westerlands and the realm.

    Signed,
Tytos Lannister, Lord of Casterly Rock and Warden of the West

The corpses had been cleaned and clad again in their armors, their hands holding again their swords proudly. All the coffins were covered by the captured banners, tattered and bloody, but still prideful, identifying each fallen. The company rode under a white banner embroidered with the seven-pointed star; the shaft was black as symbol of mourning. It was then widely announced through Lannisport that Maelys Blackfyre in good faith and as a sign of good will had returned the West their fallen sons, cousins and retainers.

A raven arrives to the main castles of the Westerlands:

To the Lords and Ladies of the West:

Those who fell in battle died valiently, their swords in hand and a roar on their lips. Now the Warrior gives them rest. However, the fault is of that prideful King, scion of a cursed line who refuses to acknowledge that Blackfyres are the rightful rulers of this great realm. My victory, however, came with a cost, the lives of those I want to rule, with Justice and a firm, determined, strong hand. Now, the so-called King Aerys has even dared to raise taxes; will you pay? haven't you spilled blood for him? isn't that enough? For me it is. Coin that should be employed in burying properly these brave sons of the West and not funding the excesses of the royal court. I wish no harm to the Westerlands and thus in sign of good-will I return to you their corpses, who have been properly attended and cared for, at my own expense. Let them rest, bury them and think twice who is the one you should really fight for.

Only the strongs shall thrive, in war and peace, through loss and triumph.

The doors of the curtain wall open, allowing the army to pass through onto the other side and into safety. Meanwhile, Lord Arryn and his retinue are invited up into the keep itself, overlooking the valley.

"Lord Arryn of the Eyrie!" said the announcer as he entered the main hall to meet with Harmund Lefford, Lord of the Golden Tooth. Sat with him was his second son, Godric, and his younger Grandson, Ryon.

"Lord Arryn," called Harmund, raising his arms in greeting, "What brings you to the Tooth? I am told by the rider that you seek Lord Lannister, I regret to inform you he is not here, but with his army somewhere in the interior of the Westerlands, facing off against rebellious Lords."

"Then he should hurry up", Lord Aurane replied demanding, not feeling all too convinced, "A King of the Rock, declareing for Blackfyre and he is not aiding our attack? I prepared you the Riverlands on an open plate, but all I see is our forces getting slaughtered. My brother Lyonel holds the position alone against the Riverlords - the moment would be ripe to strike."

"I am not privvy to Lord Lannister's decisions," said Harmund, "I know only that I am to man this pass and prevent the Riverlords entering the Westerlands. Though they have so far not made any attempt."

"At least one person doing a fine job", was all Lord Arryn said, being definitly not pleased though he remained patient, "Either way, we'll wait for your lord to join the combat together."
With these words he rode away, as it would be the last words, Aurane spoke with the Leffords.
Weeks later, when the message of Maelys' death spread and the Arryn levies protested against the decision of their Lord to still keep up the vigil, they left at some point with another Lord in charge. Whether Aurane was killed or not could not be said, though the majority of rumors, which spread over from the Arryn camp to the Goldentooth garrison state, that the Lord is still alive but probably went into hideing, fearing the wrath of the Targaryen king or even stateing that he might have retreated to bring similiar tides over Westeros like Maelys did. Only few men think that he probably killed himself in suicide, as he once promised in front of influential Lords like Lord Waynewood or the Royces.

Lord Lefford is summoned, the West march to war:
    Lord Lefford,

Tully plans to make himself Lord Protector and rule over the Kingdoms, a representative of his told me so, trying to convince me to serve him. I said: nay. That cannot be, we shall burn and loot the Riverlands, show them their place in the hierarchy and gain lands, gold and glory. Then, we will show the Seven Kingdoms which King the Westerlands considers worthy of occupying the Iron Throne. Call your banners and assemble your troops, brother.
