    Default [RFC] Common marching speed

    Hello,

What do people think about making the marching (non running) speed of *all* units the same, so that an army moves in a coherent way even over long distances ?

You can make a submod about it, but it will never be a part of main mod due to various reasons from balance (cavalry) to historical authenticity (hoplies).

I didn't imply to make slow units faster, rather the contrary.

Yes, but current values are there for a reason : D Except hoplites, all infantry walk at the same speed and only units that move faster at walk are cavalry units.

That's something I'm not sure I understand. Why do we need different marching speed ? I would assume people only expect different running speeds to really matter. Personally, I don't care that all my units are slow when marching. And I'm asking if people feel the same or not.

Cavalry has higher walk speed so you can position it faster without a need to run, same applies for AI. Hoplites have lower moving speed since they are obsolete unit and due to game limitations there aren't many ways to make hoplite phalanx obsolete without giving them penalty for movement (low maneuverability) and hoplites are only infantry units that have this penalty. Like I said, you can just make a submod for it, changing all units to walk at the same pace takes less then a minute.

Isn't that a feature of the base game ? Like, if your whole army is in a locked group, they'll move at the same speed and thus your cavalry will stay behind and not run over your troops :p

This forces the use of locked groups. The most common (or at least efficient) way to move troops is to select a bunch of them, then drag one of them, which moves the whole group of selected units in formation, without the need to create a group which would break existing ones.

I tried with locked groups (which I never use) just to see, and it doesn't even work with that. I also tried to make a mod I guess it takes only a minute when you already know what you're doing . I tried to change the battle_entities table to no avail.
