Default Does this mod give its place to the hellenistic phalanx?

I only had the oportunity to try this mod out a few minutes before I had to format my PC some days ago. I kinda had a good first impression but something that bothers me is the complete absence of phalanx in vanilla. The AI doesnt give a damn about it wich is just dumb and there is also few and horrible looking phalanx units.

I know there are great phalanx units in this mod, but... are they actually useful? Does the AI use them?

Yes. Fight a war against macedon and you will see so many phalanxes you will choke on them.

If used right they are a very good line holder. Killing off a hoplite phalanx from the front takes long, even with superior infantry.

If they get flanked, they are pretty much done for unless the enemy troops are vastly inferior.

Pikes are fine, maybe a bit underperforming when holding the line right now but you can actually push back the enemy line by double clicking which I find to be ing awesome. Flanking and missiles wreck them appart though.

I remember reading somewhere that KAM reworked pikes for 1.2 so they will perform better at defence.

Well, a hellenistic pike phalanx should be almost invincible on the front... In Rome 1 they were like a wall but could be easily outflanked without support. In Rome II vanilla thery are just a good infantry unit but you can storm them charging into them if you have superior numbers. That sucks.

I´m glad that macedonians use them, but I wonder about seleucids and ptolemaics

Well pikes aren't invincible from the front but they're still pretty tough. Charge them head on with mediocre inf is definitely a bad idea Elite units especially if massed might break them. Push your cavalry in the front of a pike phalanx and its a massacre.

AI also uses them pretty well!

Seleucids use them too. Ptolemaics also but not to such an extent.

Pikes were nerfed at some point in DeI development because the AI did not understand how invincible they were from the front and would consistently suicide its armies by frontal charging pikes. I believe they are going to get some of their previous functionality back in 1.2. The difference between vanilla and DeI pikes right now is that in DeI opposing infantry is able to push into the pike line, while in vanilla they can't even engage because the pikes keep them out of range.

And before this thread gets out of hand as these threads regarding pikes often do. Pikes are do to the game engine very difficult to balance but as some have already stated, they will be tweaked for version 1.2 and will be better than they already are. So far I havent seen anyone doing a better job in balancing pikes even though many have tried
