    Preview: Dale
A preview on the Dalians who are ready to resurrect from the ashes
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Much ill fate has been wrought upon the Dalians. Their city upon the lake now too lies in ruin because of Smaug, many innocent have died and even more during the Battle of the Five Armies. How much hope is there left?

    Faction Description
    ------------------------

We are the men of Dale, slayers of Dragons, Marshalls of the North, friends of Dwarves and Elves. We have recaptured Dale from the clutches of Smaug the Golden, and rebuilt our ancient cities, now our trade lines prosper once again. Wine comes up the River from the men of Dorwinion, our merchants traffic this to the Halls of the Woodland King, and the Dwarves of the Lonely Mountain. Often our Merchants travel by the great Western road, over the Misty Mountains and into Eriador. We are known far and wide as good and fair traders, our reputation fills our coffers. But as we rebuild our old lives, the Shadow creeps in once more.

Though we were victorious in the Battle of the Five Armies, we are yet surrounded. The Easterlings are our chief foe, they lie to the south east, ever watching our lands and scheming. The Orcs of Dul Guldur are encamped in their fortress to our west, and other more foul creatures have been seen near our borders. But we are not abandoned, we have many strong friends abiding in Rhovanion. The Dwarves of Erebor are our greatest friends, we share much; trade, weapons, maps, and in times of war we will fight for each other. The Elves of Mirkwood, while strange and mysterious folk are our friends as well. Their rangers often keep the creatures of Mirkwood from entering our lands. Also the Court of Dorwinion lies to our south, they are good and noble men, and perhaps the richest as well. Yet it seems the enemy has no fear of these. In the end the Dwarves will stay in their mountain, the Elves will stay in their beloved forest and the men of Dorwinion will continue to abide in secrecy along the shores of the Rhunic Sea. We however have no mountains or forests to hide in. Trade roads, outposts, towns and cities are scattered throughout our lands, and all the eyes of the enemy are on our wealth. Both our people and our trade must be protected.

in Dale our finest weapon is the longbow, we are masters of its art and deadly accurate, our archers will be the key tool we can provide in the upcoming war. Also we have many fine spear-men, and others armed with weapons from our dwarvish friends. But we are untrained, and largely undisciplined, after Dale and Esgaroth burned many of our barracks and armories were burnt, and our troops must be retrained and re positioned. We are valiant Edain, -Northmen as it were- and will not easily be frightened by shadow or sword. But the time of war will come and Dale must be ready, ready to fight, ready to hold. We have forts and towns along the River Running to aid in the defense of an attack from the south. Dale has many high towers and strong walls, and there are but 4 bridges into Esgaroth. An attack from land would be a hard campaign for the enemy. But he has the men to do it. We have barely the strength to hold our forts and towns, much less an army to meet him in the field. The overflowing of our coffers is worthless if not protected.

Dale is the gateway to Mirkwood, and if we are overrun, our friends will be surrounded and slain. We can no longer trust in the strength of our friends, but must look within for the strength to fight. Rhovanion will soon be flooded with tides of evil men and orcs, burning and pillaging as they go. Now more then ever we need a captain, on like Bard, who, when the Dragon comes he will not run in fear, or be dismayed by the fire, but will take up his bow in defense of his Kingdom and slay the fell beast! You now are the captain of Dale, and when the Dragon of war comes...you must slay it.

Dale Quests & Features: A Kingdom Rebuild

All of Dale seems ruined, but still, the Dalians must serve a goal in their lives, and determined and brave as they are, they will do so, and follow their king into every peril.
The following traits will they carry everywhere they go, characterising their very entities

    Northmen traits:

Hardy Folk: Northmen are hard but good people, they work the earth and guard their homes. But with a heart for home comes a power in battle, and the northmen are natural warriors.

(Increased income from agriculture, small morale bonus when fighting in home territory)

Middle Men: Although most would see the absence of 'nobility' with the Northmen as something bad , it would seem in fact that this has ever helped them to survive and to endure hardships with smaller means, like loyalty, devotion and friendship rather than pride and dignity.

(Less Smithing potential than other races (reduced income from industry),
Increased income from trade, and diplomatic bonuses with all non evil factions)

    Faction Traits:

Keen Marksmen: Led by Bard the Dragonslayer and having a long heritage with the bow, the Dalians are among the finest Marksmen to be found among men.

    The Muster of Dale
No evil might is overcome without a force of war. The military structure revives parallell to realm itself, from humble levied peasants, to organised and well-disciplined troops:

The Generals of Dale will grant you exclusive insight in their plans. With this structure, a machine of war will be made ready to defend the newly-rebuilt city of Dale to the last, so that it will stay rebuilt! Here follows an in-detail description. A clear development can be seen from agrarian units to professional soldiers:
    Rivermen:

With the arrival of Smaug who drove the Dwarves out of Erebor and laid waste to the city of Dale, the survivors of the Desolation of Smaug ventured south to find shelter in the lands near the many rivers and small streams, or to labour in the city if Esgaroth. This made for a major shift in the society of the northmen: the income of trade caravans coming from far and wide, and of large cargo fleets carrying silks, gems and other precious resources, was no longer. Now, the Dalians and the men of the lake rely on farming and fishing for their everyday survival. There is little more trade in the lands to the north-east due to the oncoming darkness. But now that the dragon is gone and the great battle won, the men who dwell on the marshes are scrambling for what food and shelter they can, hoping to find the opportunity and strength to rebuild the lives of their forefathers. They will not hesitate to use their hunting tools, javelin, dagger, and shield to defend their land from anyone who would seek to hinder them in their rebuilding. They will not let anyone take the last belongings they possess, not even the most terrible of foes, for most have seen dragon-fire in the sky, and a city turned to ashes.

    Northmen Scouts

Ever since the fall of Rhovanion, Easterlings have been pouring into the plains east of Mirkwood. There is no longer a safe place to dwell in peace, for the land is subject to plunder and bloodshed. No longer are these lands controlled by any free people: their influence halts where the watch-posts, of which there are many, have no more sight beyond the horizon. Such a watch-post is often situated quite far away from any settlement, but is no less important for that. Between the many small villages and the sentries, there ride the scouts. Often descendants from the ancient horse-people of Rhovanion or even from the people that now dwell in Rohan, they are the swiftest of all and thus the most suited to carry messages concerning important findings and events from the ever-threatened and uncertain frontier to the garrisoned towns. They are a vital part of the protection of Dale and the other lands to the north. Without them, an army of Easterlings might already be far up the Celduin while the Dalians were yet unprepared for any assault. This must never happen: do not abandon the scouts of the north.

    Spear Militias

When the Dwarves attempted to retake the Lonely Mountain and to kill the Dragon Smaug after they had awakened it, Smaug came to Esgaroth to destroy the allies of Thorin's Company in vengeance. In this he almost succeeded, if had it not been for Bard who slayed him with one of the few black arrows still remaining.
Immediately after the great firestorm that once again burned the homes of the northmen, Bard led the survivors to the ancient ruins of Dale in order to seek refuge there and negotiate with Thorin, demanding that he keep his word to provide shelter and the promised share of the treasure for the rebuilding of the lakemen's homes.
Thorin, however, did not heed the call of Bard to fulfill his promise. If it had not been for an army of evil, also pushed by the presence of an army from the Woodland Realm commanded by the elven-king Thranduil himself, they would have fought each other to the death, but such was not their fate. Together, they defeated the enemy, and at last the hopes of the northmen for a new and better future, a future where they no longer have to live in the shadow of a darkened mountain that is home a terrible malice, and where they do not have to endure rotten timber under foot, dreadful smells of fish-oil and tar in their noses, and corrupt Mayors that hold them in thralldom. All thanks to the valour of the devastated, yet resilient and brave men of the Lake. They have proven that no matter what shadow afflicts their lands, they will either fight against it in unity or die trying to save the women and children. And should the hour grow late, and should all hope be abandoned, the fishermen, the guardsmen of the royal hall, the merchant and the soldier, will remember the great deeds of their ancestral kin, and they will stand firm and equal the great deeds of yore.

    Yeomen

Ever have the Dalians been familiar with the use of the bow. Indeed, ever has the improved version of an ordinary bow, the longbow, been of great use to all men of the North. Their lives depend on this weapon, for they use it for the hunt and for driving back unpleasant visitors. The tradition of the longbow in the heritage of the Northmen goes back to years beyond memory. From generation to generation, a bow was passed over from grandfather to father, and from father to son. The bow is a family heirloom to a man of the lands of Dale. They wield it in honour of their ancestors and family, no matter how miserable their lives may seem.
Now that the Dragon is dead and the enemy, for the time being, has been driven back, many who used to live in fear and under unpleasant circumstances now seek now to better their lives, often by moving to the city. The road of their new lives lies ahead, open, and they will take it. On their way, they will carry their beloved bows, bows that aided them in their struggle for survival. Although life in the city will change, they will forever carry it with them and use it in defense of their new lives in the city of Dale newly-built.

    Watchpost Sentries

Despite a terrifying dragon, fierce battle, poverty, corrupt overlords and a sea-storm of fire, the Dalians endured. Slowly, their territory begins to revive. It can be seen throughout the lands: the city of Dale has grown, from the Lonely Mountain once again streams of gold slowly start to flow, trade ships set sail from Esgaroth to Dorwinion to and fro, roads are build, traversing marshland and crossing rivers, more folk on the move can be seen, and more is yet to come with oppurtunities in the cities drawing folk from far and wide back into the homes of their ancestors.
Although evil has been pushed back, the Dalians should not rest in their efforts of war, for the shadow of the east has rekindled and none now can forsee what fortune or doom lies ahead. However, it is known from contacts with the men of Dorwinion, that marauding Easterlings are seen more often at their borders. They do not yet have the will and courage to cross rivers into Dalian land, but these sings must be taken seriously so that no ill fate will struck the land once more and history repeats itself.
Being wise, King Bard of Dale and the Mayor of Esgaroth fund many watchpost, situated from the springs of the river Carnen on its eastern banks to the sea of Rhûn, and from the oncoming Eastern Bight of Mirkwood to Dorwinion. The many watchtowers are maintained, garrisoned and guarded by the first new fine troops, recruited from the common people with a will to guard the new Kingdom. They keep a watchful eye upon Dale's many borders, and a good thing too, for ever evil seeks to gain a foothold in this world, and should indeed Easterlings pour into the lands, the Dalians must know!

    Rangers of Rhovanion

As the wealth of the Dalians grows slowly but steadily, so does the unwanted attention it draws. Many that do not benefit from trade with the Dalians are now looking to steal that which they desire. Easterlings have been spotted on the wastelands of Rhovanion to the south and the barren plains of Rhûn to the east. From Dol Guldur now spawn great beasts and large hosts of orcs that plunder the lands of the Dalians. Of course, there are the watchposts and messengers, but lately, the King of Dale has decided to recruit some of his fine bowmen into stealth units to patrol beyond the frontier and perform skirmishes and ambushes on packs of Easterlings and orcs that would possibly threaten Dale's borders. This adds another line of defence to the still young and upstarting nation that is reviving from the shadows and disasters of old. As such, these bands of rangers are already an unmissable group of survivallors. They are among the bravest, most keen and agile men of Dale. They will make sure as little foes and servants of an evil will trespass into the lands of Dale as possible, or cross the rivers into the realm.
They are hooded and masked, padded in leather armour and armed with a longbow and high skills, providing excellent shot and aim, protecting life for the innocent, and assuring death for those guilty of evil ways.

    Shipsmen

Ever have the men of the Lake had a heritage of trade, maritime commerce and shipping. Large fleets filled with fine gems and silks used to sail up the river Running, but those days were ended, for when the Dragon came, the markets of Dale were set ablaze, and the Dwarves were driven out of their mountain, and no more riches flowed out of the mountain's gate. Trade came to a halt, many died in the firestorm, and survivors sought refuge in the woods and fields living from hunting and farming. The Shipsmen were forced to survive with fishing, yielding far less than in the past, but such was the way of the world.
Times have changed now though, and anew there is hope for trade flourishing again in the Northern Lands. It lies in the hand of those who still remember the ancient profession of shipping. They will arm themselves and take risks for a chance to let trade revive. With fine wine from Dorwinion coming from the south up the river, grain and food from the many farms on the land, goods from the Woodland Realm traded with Thranduil for many new luxuries, and gold flowing from Erebor once more, there is hope for the ancient trade fleets to be rebuild in double size! Even though there is the ever danger of plundering Easterlings and woodland creatures, the fisherman shall awake and take up his ancient profession of a trader, the markets rebuild, and the riches of old, revitalize the Kingdom, enriching it, and fill the treasures of the Dalians. Armed with sword and courage, these shipsmen will guard their precious fleets, for the sake of all.

    Merchant Escorts

Development of the lands to the Northeast means the agrarian and fishing-society is slowly replaced by an urban society based on trade, replacing agriculture on its turn. However, the lands are still dangerous and not fully-protected and trade over long distances to the Woodland Realm, Dorwinion and the Iron Hills is still not without high risks. Protection for this could only be provided by fine soldiers, of which there are still many left in Dale, but they are expensive to hire. Not even the most wealthy of merchants and caravan owners The state has noticed this unwanted blockade, as it deprives men for opportunity to earn money as a soldier and withholds traders to trade against profitable yields. To boost the economy and the common welfare, the King of Dale now subsidizes these troops to train them for combat, give them proper armour and a horse to respond quickly to enemy raids far afield. As such, the price for these protectors has dropped significantly, and already, many merchants and trade caravans eagerly choose to travel towards their trading partners far away in Dorwinion, the Iron Hills to the east and the lands to the west.
In order to provide continued protection, these escorts are provided with a horse to drive back enemy brigands effectively, a decent sword and a shield for combat. They are trained to group themselves efficiently so that even when some men are off driving back raiders, the trade caravans are still protected. Such ways guard the wealth of Dale.

    Laketown Guards

Esgaroth built upon the Long Lake is situated south of Dale and the Lonely mountain, with the River Running flowing down from the north into the lake, and southeast to Dorwinion and the Inland sea of Rhûn. Many trading ships would come from downstream up to Esgaroth, and they would be filled with large quantities of fine silks, precious wine and other valuable goods. The Lakemen would sell these goods to the men of Dale, to the Dwarves of the Lonely Mountain, or the Woodelves of Mirkwood, generating huge amounts of wealth that would flow through the channels and streets of Esgaroth like blood running through veins.
However, those golden days were ended. With the Desolation of Smaug and the stirring of the Easterlings, many trade routes ceased to exist or simply could not effort adequate protection of their cargo. As such, the people of Esgaroth slowly turned from wealthy traders into poor fishermen. But this did not move the aristocrates: they lived on in the old fashion and would raise the same high taxes only for their own good and luxury. Especially during the reign of the last Mayor of Esgaroth, many commoners rose up against this decadent higher class. In respond to this, the aristocrates would pay these Laketown Guards more than any other person of a different profession, in order to prevent the rebel-rousers to gain a significant voice.
But now, in the restored days, the Dragon is gone as well as the corruptive mayors. In the chaos that arose after that Smaug came, the rich tried to escape by boat carrying almost all their treasures away instead of desperate people, as such, presenting themselves as an easy target for the Dragon. Few survived, but with them, the suppressors passed away too, and now, the Guards of the Lake are presented with a new duty: to protect the new trade routes, wealth and riches of the people of Esgaroth, that now flow once again from all directions to the Long Lake, from the perils that lurk beyond the horizon in the East, or creep beneath the shadow of the trees of Mirkwood. The Laketown Guards only take with them the experience, training and skill to fight with the glaive in wet and narrow streets, from the dark past. Their new duty is an honourable one. A duty which they carry with pride and dignity towards the very end.

    Marksmen of Dale

The city of Dale is situated on the banks of the River Running between the Lonely Mountain to the north and Esgaroth to the south. West of it lies the realm of Thranduil and the Great Wood and to the east the road leads to the Dwarven colonies of the Iron Hills. Such central positioning makes this location crucial to trade and control of a strategically important position. Although its proximity to the Dwarven realm of Erebor has mostly been a blessing, it has also proven to be a curse: the fact that it was the Dwarves and their wealth that drew the attention of Smaug the Firedrake meant the utter destruction of the wealthy city of the Dalians. Such ill fate could have been prevented if Girion, Lord of Dale, ancestor of Bard the Dragonslayer, could slay the beast with a Black Arrow shot from the Dwarven Wind-lance that was mounted upon a high tower. His attempts, however, were in vain, for none of the three Black Arrows he shot found a mark. Why he had to turn to this last measure, shooting precious and rare arrows from a piece of artillery, is quite simple: the tough and thick hide of a dragon is harder than any steel and more resilient than any shield. Girion did try to pierce it before he laid his hands upon the Wind-lance by rallying his famously-skilled marksmen to fire upon the beast. Yet no matter how keen the shot of his men was, and how many times it would have slain many other creatures of the Dark, it was no use. And thus the fate of Dale was sealed.
However, all those days are gone. Dale has risen from the ashes like a blade forged anew, and once again its bells ring in gladness. The fountains have sprung anew, and the men of Dale have returned to their former glory. Their markets are crowded with travelers and merchants from afar. Fleets come up the River Running filled with fine silks and wine from Dorwinion. So too has the military and urban structure been rebuilt. The ancient longbows, along with the cloaks and armour of the Marksmen, are now wielded and worn once more by a new generation: a generation of hope and glory restored, a generation that will stand its ground against the oncoming tide. None that seek to reduce Dale to its old desolation will escape the feel of an arrow, sharp and keen, shot in his shoulder!

    Dalian Sword Infantry

Dale has been rebuilt. The markets thrive again with the trade of goods brought by merchants from lands far and wide. King Bard rules with a sovereign and noble hand over the Dalians, and the manufactory flourishes once again, further securing the continued wealth of the People of Dale. Befitting such a well-organised and continued urban system is a structured military organisation. The government of Dale has called for a professional army, an army whose training and maintenance is financed by the state. Such measurements would no longer require levies or militias unless the need is extremely high, giving ample time and energy to spend on Dale's economy for those keen on crafting and trading, as well as giving strong-willed warriors or the poor a chance to prove themselves and get a career in the army.
The Swordsman's regiment is among the core of this new army. It provides many closed ranks of professional troops to outflank enemy formations and to strike heavy blows upon the ill-equipped ranks of Orcs and Easterlings. These men are recruited from among Dale's finest warriors and its most able men. They are disciplined, well-equipped, and well-armed, providing a decent threat to any that would seek to once again lay waste to Dale.

    Dalian Spearguards

A storm seems coming. The hordes of the East seem to linger behind the hills, waiting to strike when they are at full strength. Already have the rangers reported seeing more organised groups of Balchoth harassing just behind the frontier. They state that their skirmishes become more organised at the day, and more threatening and serious with that!
Being wise, King Bard has called upon the generals of Dale to reform their military structure once more in order to introduce a sturdy unit of defence. As such, the Spearguards are born. Hailing from many fanatic warriors among the Dalians, these men are properly trained and well-disciplined. Their armour and weapons are provided by the state and are of great quality, far superior to that which a common man could purchase himself. Carrying a shield and a spear in battle, these men can withstand harsh punishment by missiles, cavalry and infantry.
These men are well-equipped, but more importantly, they cherish in their minds, the memory of their beloved city, with its towers and its markets, that now flourish once more, having resurrected from the ashes of old. None now shall once more question the might of Dale, nor tempt it!

    Dale Cavalry Regiment

Many northmen have had a long history with horses. Most famous are the Éothéod, the forefathers of the Rohirrim that now dwell in Rohan. These Éothéod lived for many years near the springs of the Anduin south of the Grey Mountains, their capital being Framsburg. Those that did not aid Steward Cirion of Gondor, or did not want to leave for Calenardhon to dwell there, remained in the upper Anduin Vale. Also known are the ancient people of Rhovanion, whose lands were overrun by many foes and are now a wasteland, many being driven out to Gondor and Rohan, further strengthening those realms at the cost of Rhovanion itself.
But now that evil has resurged from the deep, and many orcs and goblins creep under the night sky near the banks of the Anduin and the plains of ancient Rhovanion, many now seek to organise themselves. At that very moment, it was King Bard of Dale, that sought to recruit a cavalry regiment into his armies. For that, he sought after these ancient peoples, and they pledged themselves in service of the king of Dale. They now fight alongside the Dalians in defence in these evil times for as long as the Free Peoples can stand firm against the dark tide. Armed with a lance, a shield and very decent armour, the skill and tradition of the ancient Éothéod has been rekindled and now serves well against the evil of Sauron.

    Bardings

Off all men, the Dalians are the arguably the best and most renowned marksmen of all Middle-Earth. Indeed, their tradition in the use of the Longbow has ever been intertwined with the Dalesmen. But even among the best, there are the best of the best, and these are represented by the Bardings. Only the Elves can outshoot these keen marksmen. They form the elites of Dale and are the bodyguard of the King of Dale himself, mostly being among the best marksmen himself. For sure, King Bard the Dragonslayer, who killed the dragon, rebuilt Dale and Esgaroth, and revived the Kingdom of old, is the best, but he is followed directly by these. No finer shot is to be found east of Mirkwood, than that of the Bardings of Dale: the Marshalls of the North!

    Dwarven Windlance

(All artillery pictures are still to be made)

As long as there have been foul beasts coming down from the north, Man and Dwarf have been looking to devise a weapon with enough strength to pierce the hide of a dragon, for a dragon's hide is tough, to tough that no ordinary bowman could penetrate it.
In the days of old, when Erebor was thriving and Dale's merchants would acquire riches from far and wide, an ancient weapon was created successfully in cooperation between Men and Dwarves: a wind-lance. This wind-lance, combining a Dwarven ballista and a Dalian ship harpoon, represents the cooperation of the two peoples in its very entity. With its ingenuity, it can shoot arrows with dreaded accuracy and speed, so that any beasts of evil could be killed by its shot, even dragons.
For that purpose, Black Arrows were made for it. Only a few of those arrows were ever made. When a marksmen missed his mark only a few times, he would find his ammunition supply swiftly spent. Now, in the restored days, with evil stirring again in the east, anew have the arrows of the Dragon-slayers been forged, to be fired by wind-lances once again in service to the free peoples by keeping at bay the terrible creatures of evil.

That is because of the face model they use, not the helmet itself. The facemodel is kinda chubby.

I assumed that but just never noticed it in Attila so I was wondering where the face comes from. Just looks a bit odd to me. Armor and clothing look fantastic otherwise.

A face comes from Rome II Total War if someone remembers this game
But it's used for test, Dale units will have nordic faces from vanilla game.

Dale was my favorite faction in third age, and this mod seems to have a new and unique take on how the armies of Dale would have looked. I am very exited to play Dale. For me it is a toss up which faction I will play first dwarves of erebor or Kingdom of Dale, regardless fantastic work I am looking forward to seeing the models for the rangers of Rhovanion they sound amazing and their unit cards look very cool!

Next preview is going to be Gondor. It'll be different from the one you've seen before and will come with descriptions as in this thread. You'll see more units added to the Gondor roster.

Great job, it's a very nice roster. Could be add, in the future, more Laketown units with bow, scimitar and mounted? What about an elite melee unit with the helmet 3 and 4 of the picture?
    Kind regards

In case you haven't seen it, we have previewed the unit cards roster for the Iron Hills dwarves and a few pieces of armour/weapons. Its all in the Development Picture Gallery under the Dwarves tab. http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...icture-Gallery
Its a slow process doing really good descriptions of the units, making quality unit cards and all the things associated with just getting a rough idea of each unit.
The entire mod overall is, in my opinion, attempting to:
Create an entirely unique and fun to play roster for 25 factions, with as little repetition amongst the units.
Represent Tolkien's lore to minute details, through the unit descriptions, faction descriptions, balancing of units, representations of units and more.
We've got to create all the 3D models from scratch. Its quite a big job to say the least.

Edit: Theres 25 factions, and on average 14 units per faction so far. Thats 350 units.

If you look closely, you can see that the spearguard already has this helmet with mainchail.
Why adding Laketown units? Laketown militias are exactly the same as Dale militias all over the realm. They would only differ in name

Woops I meant that I thought there might be 350 units total when the entire mod is finished. 350 units have not been planned yet, thats just my guess for the total number at the very end of this process. Then of course, submods can add additional units. The number 350 was based off 25 factions, and so far there is an average of like 14 units for each faction so far previewed.
