    Default Cease hostilities! What's the best way to edit the game to make this more playable?

    Hey thanks in advance for any help here:

    I want to change how cease_hostilities from the pope operates.

    I've been playing with the descr_missions.txt file. Saving the file and going back into my game doesn't seem to apply changes.
    * Do I need to start a new game before it picks up the script?
    * Do I need to tell the game somehow to use my script instead of the packed one?

    As far as the changes, here's what I want:

    I either want to change the penalties (maybe small drop in favor rather than excommunication, which seems a bit harsh)

    or

    change the triggers for the mission to start. For example, maybe the war duration should be 15 turns instead of what it is now: having me attacked and the moment respond with a siege on the enemy settlement, I get the cease hostilities mission. Maybe the cease hostilities trigger shouldn't go to me if I didn't START hostilities. Etc.

    Yup, you need a line in the CFG file to do so, if you use the main game to mod (not a smart idea) then you need to make the CFG file read-only:
    [io]
    file_first = 1
    Use my mod base folder to experiment with stuff like this, it's properly set up for that purpose.

    You can change the penalties (payback_id) or set up your own, but I am afraid your other trigger suggestions are not possible.

    Are you referring to medieval2.preference.cfg ?

    .. and to that add

    [io]
    file_first = 1

    .. and then set it as read-only?

    It's funny how this was exactly the answer I was looking for and I didn't find anywhere something telling me how to sort of "make script changes work".

    All is backed up, but I tried loading it with the lines added and...

    "Medieval Total War 2 has encountered an unspecified error"

    incidentally this exact same error occurred with Kingdoms and is why I don't run Kingdoms.

    If you get an error now then you have a made a mistake when editing your files. There could be a clue in the log.

    The error message as such is generic and doesn't refer to any particular error, for that you require to be able to read the log.

    I seriously suggest to use my set up to start modding: there are a number of pitfalls (like the Ragusa map error, the mongols winning) that are removed. In principle it is the grand campaign with kingdoms capabilities (hot oil, yes\no events, expanded scripting).
