In my mtw2 folder did't have medieval2.preference.cfg

Not possible, that file gets generated if it isn't present - did you look in the correct folder?: Medieval II Total War

Check this tutorial and delete the medieval 2 total war folder in the virtual store folder if it exists.

I am sorry, but I still think you are not looking in the right folder:
- Right click on the desktop short cut for the Medieval 2 game
- Choose 'open file location'
- This is the directory where the medieval2.preference file is

If that file is not present then it should get generated when you start the game the next time.
