Naval warfare is still kinda dirt even in DEI. That said, it's much much harder to set ships alight. Ramming is the most effective way to sink a ship. Or artillery. Use your marine ships like an infantry front line, ramming then boarding, and use your missile support ships as flankers.

Honestly it's been a while since I navied. I usually just autocalc.

Ramming is definitely the name of the game against transports. Just sail around them and isolate 1-2 of them at a time. Against warships? Sometimes you can double or triple team them. Have the AI follow one and use 1-2 others to ram the side. But this is harder to do due to their speed. Sometimes in naval warfare bigger is better. If I am to fight transports, then triremes are what I use. If it's sea battles against warships then I use 4s and 5s. A 4 or 5 will beat a 3 just about every time. Board em.

My main battle fleet has a Pentere, 3-4 Tetreres, and about 4-6 triremes. Anymore ships than this can get very difficult and lead to unnecessary losses.

6 triremes can easily defeat 20 transports and run faster than larger warships. These make great small fleets to react to land invasions. Remember that your fleets on campaign move as fast as your slowest ship, so use the trireme admirals in these fleets.
