    Default Early Roman Enemy

I'm Ardiaei and have all of Illryia, Apollona, and several thracian towns. The roman have started invading illyria and apollona after I took it from them. Really dont stand a chance agiant roman units I dont think.

I'm asking for 1. tactics to defeat the roman army with late hastati and princips.

    2. a away to peace

My concern is that i really dont want to defeat rome now, so early in the game. and I want to know if anyone knows a way around it.

Dont pick a faction next to Rome and expect to live in peace

The illyrians actually get access almost immediately to very high quality spear, sword, and hoplite units. Something I wish would be reserved for more late middle, or late game to promote illyrians being a more raider/pirate like light troop faction, but what the hey.

They would give you the best bet at tackling Roman troops at any rate.

Be happy they did not get marian

You can use a lot of light troppers as Javelinmen and horse skirmishers.
If the Roman army are heavy based on infantry, then they do not stand a chance against ligt tropper
Recruit also some cheap spearmen and use the hammer & anvil tactic.

Romes strength is infantry, your strength is good peltasts and decent hoplites, Rome tends to be superior cavalry wise due to Socii Equites Extraordinarii spam , the best bet you have is using Hoplite to hold, Slingers to kill cav and Velites, and Peltasts to attack from the back, I think that the only affordable cav Illyria has is the crappy Illyrian cav so you can try to route cheaper Roman units like Rorarii and Hastati via those with rear charges. Also a warning, Velites can destroy Illyrian cav due to their Gladius and decent melee stats.

Bout sums it up. Hold with hoplites, use slingers to kill cavalry, and light infantry/peltasts to circle and flank.

If a Roman unit has exposed thier flank against a melee unit with javs, take the extra 35 secs and let them throw all thier javs, then charge. It makes a huge difference.

Not at all. The game auto calculates them, but they give some odd results. For example you can have a unit that for elite cavalry units is displayed as high treat, but those cavalry units will have no problem with routing it.
