Default Culture Conversation and overpowered Phalanx

    Hi,

Great mod, it's so much better than the vanila version of this game. But 2 topics I'd like to talk about.

    - Culture conversation: I'm playing as Egypt, the province Libyia (left of province Egypt) is complete under my control. I have 2 tempels (+9) and one Dignitary (+11) in that province which gives me a culture conversation of +20. That gives the region a plus in my culture of 0.1% per round. That means i need (I'm at 75%) 250 rounds to be at 100% The province Syria is also with 2 tempels (+8 culture conversation) complete in my posession, but my culture influence is decreasing! There are no enemy Dignitaries in this region, Seleucid don't exist anymore. I don't know if this was even influenced by the mod, if this is so, please change the paramters in the next patch, if not please add it to this great mod

    - The strenth of greek Phalanx-Pikeman: I played as Rome and it was fun. Till I arrived in greece. Attacking a levy-pikeman unit with 2 units of Principes, one from the front, one from behind. The pikeman take down my unit in the front, turning around and slaughtering the unit attacking from behind. I think the problem is the kill/death rate of these pikeman units is unbalanced. They take out ~5 units per minute in their front but only losing ~3 units per minute from my unit stabbing their backs. Anyone else having trouble fighting greek states like Epirus?

You can't get to 100% of your culture in most provinces. Depending on the local traditions in the province, you can only get to a point where cultural influence is balanced between the different sources of influence.

Also, as your imperium level goes up, your cultural influence will decrease. This probably explains why your influence is decreasing in Syria. You can't see it in the cultural UI unfortunately, but it should be visible in your imperium effects.

What battle difficulty are you playing on?

Thanks for your answer and explanation, seems I have to live with it But sad that the local traditions in Syria seem to be hellenistic because it was Egypt terrotory a long time ago before Alexander. But that's another story.

And I'm playing on mormal battle difficulty, was the first thing I checked. I had late Hastati/Principes/Triarii fighting Epirus normal units and had no chance.

    Yes, but campaign difficulty?

Hard, does that influence in any way the battle difficulty? I'm playing Egypt now, also with hard campaign/normal battle difficulty and have no problems at all because now I'm the master of the pikemen

    About local traditions:

First of all I find the current system pretty "realistic". No power could ever convert all and everybody to their onw culture, thats not even the case in today's countries. Also Alexander was the one who tried hard to convert them to Greek culture. Other

empires did not have such a strong emphasis on converting the populace to their culture. Carthage is actually a pretty good example. They didn't care if everybody in their dominion were Punic (which actually is just a Roman term), they were more relying on

    trade.

Campaign difficulty doesn't have an affect on battle difficulty, if I understood your last question correctly

The culture system is the way it is since CA did..patch...11? I don't remember, it was 2 years ago . There is a submod that removes them, but I find them realistic because you can never remove a local culture over the course of a few decades, history has proved that.

There are Hellenistic bonuses there because thats where the Seleucids start.

Umm. In my last trial of the hardcore submod I also found Rome to be ill-advised going on some Greek adventures at the very start of the game. As the first Roman troops are still fighting very much in Greek style, couldn't it be Greek troops are a very tough nut to crack early in the game?

Yeah xD I'm playing on Very hard (campaign) and hard (battle) and I find pikes to be used scarcely since they have such a slow kill rate... might be good to hold back enemies but OP? Definitely not

Maybe I should play an older version
Even it was Hastati, the point for me is the missing effect of attacking a Phalanx from behind. The moral goes down due "attacked from behind" but the number of kills doesn't seem to be effected by stabbing their backs. I know that's hard to mod because lowering their defence skills will also influence their casulties taken from attacks from their front. But maybe the effect of "attacked from behind" should be a little higher for Phalnax units.

There is a lot of fun to see many claiming the phalanx in DeI is not effective, but you think it is overpowered. In Vanilla the pikes are actually more powerful.

Anw, I believe phalanx in DeI is as balanced as it could be. Please be aware that in Rome 2, phalanx units have no secondary weapons. They use kopis in melee but their stats remain the same. That's the main reason they are not weak enough while attacked from side and behind.

I actually thought that the higher end pikes could be called a little OP but that the initial rank (levy) could be buffed in the attack just slightly. Very few kills in a battle.

I think they're fine. Although I'm confused on how best to use them. I've noticed that in deep formation, (8+ ranks deep) they still tire way faster than other infantry of the same stamina.

Yeah def not OP. Except for when they magically move through my fort walls....
