Default Plans for realistic sizes releases?

    Good evening,

Long time ago I was by own account changing the game in order to makes it more realistic, and making my own mod (a year of work later I ended up stopping the mod, as one of the last patches broke the game to me and I I would have to redo all the tables from scratch).

Although what I have achieved in that time did not reach 1% of what we see implemented in Dei, I still miss playing with those units with greater sizes and close of what is referenced in the history books: the first cohort of 960 men .. standard one with 480, phalanx with 512 men ... and etc.

So, the questions is: The team has plans to release in the future a version with units with more "realistic" sizes?

Thanks for the time and the effort in the mod, Dei is fantastic.

... And sorry for my English.

There are many technical reasons why larger unit sizes do not work. But, you are welcome to change them very easily using PFM.

I imagine, a unit in milliaria with 768 riders is beautiful to see, but destroys the balance of the game, in addition to increasing the confusion and blobbing of lines of Ai.

In the future, after I finish the campaign with the mod I might try.

And I say try, because the variety of units is so great that the process of searching one by one in books / internet and then modificalas in the two tables will be very laborious.

Anyway, thanks for the reply and keep up the good work!

Well the main problem will be sieges as cities are to small and naval invasion will either crash the game or lead to neverending battles as transports will not be able to handle that many troops :/

Yeah, I mean, I made a submod with some increased unit sizes if you want to try that, but I didn't go that far. Battle maps just aren't big enough for it to make sense.

This is something I've been struggling with for some time. You can read about my experiences here: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...resent-an-Army

Performance limitations aside I think it is something that is very possible, but there are several things you have to give up to make it a reality.

    1) Anything Naval. The ships are very limited with how many men you can get on a single ship, and introducing multiple ships into a unit breaks the already terrible naval combat. Since the Naval part of the game is so poor in Rome 2 this was an easy concession for me.. but as KAM has stated above, the game just cannot handle landing that many ships. Aren't enough spots on the beach. ** There is a way around this. It would involve a massive overhaul of the naval part of the game, and would not be historical. You would have to remove all but the highest tiers of ships that are able to hold 140-200 men at a time. There are enough spots on most beaches to land x2 of each ship. The other option is to increase the amount of HP naval units have to a large degree, but I personally feel that turning marines into elite units where 60 men can compete with 480 is a poor decision.**

    2) Sieges will be a cluster. This is another area of the game that I feel is poor enough that not partaking means not losing much, but it is still something to consider. Cities aren't big enough and streets aren't wide enough. You'll get massive blobs due to the AI throwing all it has into one area and causing massive slog on your system. It does this anyway but it is so much more of an issue with large unit sizes.

Everything else works well with it though. The battle maps are large enough to support it, and even gives cause for deeper formations. Also, as an aside for the realistic army enthusiasts, the AI handles 20 units of 400 men better than it handles 40 units of 200 men. I do not recommend achieving realistic army sizes via increasing the amount of units are available in an army.

Naval will give you other problems aswell. Users report units which disembarks lose their torsos and other parts of their bodies due to limitations in the game so introducing a huge number of troops for transport will most likely end up with alot of units missing parts of their bodies.

I've never actually ran into this, and I've tested this a loooooot. My guess is those people are trying to put more than 200 men on a ship instead of spreading it out over multiple ships, thus the graphics glitches (since the extra men they put on the ship are actually bugged out in the middle of the map).
