    Default Text Missing in Campaign

I've been playing this game for ages now, and this is my first time encountering this issue. When I play a campaign, a good amount of text is missing. For instance the "Army" text is missing from the box on the towns, there is no text listing what the numbers mean in the treasury, and no text appears when dealing with a diplomat.

I have verified that my drivers are fully up to date for my graphics card.

I am running the game through Steam. I have completely uninstalled and deleted all files and reinstalled the game. Once I did this, it seemed to be fixed. However, I then went into export_descr_unit and made some edits. I also added the required line at the bottom of the preferences file for these edits to take hold. I then went back into the game, and the text was missing again.

I've been able to make edits to units and run the campaign for years without this issue. Can someone please help me fix this?

    Cheers

I just tested it again. I completely removed any trace of the game from my pc and reinstalled it. I loaded it, and the texts worked just fine in the campaign. Then I went in to the data folder and edited the units. I loaded the game and the texts had disappeared again. Why is this happening?

Just to be clear, is it just text related to your edits, or various random text that is missing?

I do not use Steam so I can't say whether or not it has anything to do with that or whether the following is applicable, but your problem could be related to VirtualStore, which is where Windows takes your edited files and puts them somewhere else. Check for a folder called Sega (or possibly Steam - again, I have no idea what the install path is for Steam games) in any one of the subdirectories located in C:\Users\*yourname*\AppData\. Let me know if you find anything.

Also, is it totally necessary for you to mod the main data folder? You could install Gigantus' Bare Geomod, which is the fully-functional, original game in the form of a mod folder. It would be a lot safer going forward to put your edited files in there. That way, if you make a mistake, it won't ruin your game, and any issues with Kingdoms expansions or other mods you play can be avoided. I would install it, make the changes you want, and see if the issue occurs in Bare Geomod.

No, the missing text has nothing to do with my edits. The only edits I made were stats on four different units. The missing text includes things like the word "Army" on the tab next to "Town", the words signifying what each number means in the treasury, all of the names of each tab when you click on the national icon (pope, allies/at war, etc.), and all of the text in the window when either I or the AI initiate a diplomatic discussion.

As for the virtualstore location, I deleted that when I did my complete eradication of anything to do with Total War on my pc. Since I tested everything again, it has not reappeared.

Also, I've never had this issue editing the main data folder before. I've been playing Medieval II Total War for years, and editing the main folder for years, and this is the first time I've had this issue.

Well, it's up to you, but I would try the Bare Geomod route just to see whether there is a difference or not.

I assume you've already checked your error logs for relevant warnings?

What I decided to do was again completely delete the game and all of its files from my PC. I then installed the game from the original disc. Then I went in to the main data file and made my edits. I haven't had any issues at all. So something must be going wrong when I do it through Steam.

I don't have steam either but I believe there is a way to verify your files. Have a look on the steam forum how to verify your installation.

I tried verifying the files on the first attempted fix. It made no difference. But I'm playing from the original disc with no issues now, so no worries I suppose.

I'm having the same issue. If I run the game unpacked with the edited descr_unit file, the units will be recruitable but the UI screws up and text boxes, unit cards and city tabs are missing. When I run the game normally it works fine but my edits obviously aren't there. I've tried verifying and all that does is keep replacing my edited strat file. I'm re-installing the game now so I can't show my system log but I did have a look at it and at the top it said that there were several data/text .txt files missing that only had .bin versions of them. Maybe the game is having trouble reading them?

It's really bummed me out. I was having fun as the Papal States and when I found out my Huge Cities wouldn't recruit the Papal Guard I decided to edit them in. I can't even run the game unpacked without the UI stuffing up without ever even editing any files.

Use my Bare Geomod set up - it's the Grand Campaign with kingdoms abilities. If you want to edit a particular file that is not included in BG's folders then simply copy it from your unpacked files. Just make sure you deleted\renamed the two descr_geography files in the main game's data folder - else the battles will crash.

Unfortunately I made a post about this in the mod workshop before finding this one. I have the same problem as the others. I also have the game on steam so I'm now wondering if it's a Steam problem. I never had this problem before just from changing a few numbers in a file.

I didn't mention this in the other post but verifying the game cache on steam doesn't do anything. I did it and it just fixed one file which was desc_strat so I had to unlock the factions again. The file I modified was untouched. The problem only happens when I put the "[io] file_first = true line" in the preferences file.
