    Icon11 Who wants more provinces?

Hey there, well this is my first post on the forum so i thought i would just say hi, ive been playing the series since shogun and my favourite from the series is Rome Total Realism so naturally i couldnt wait for a mod of Medieval2 as soon as i saw the text files out (never modding total war before) i got stuck in.
Using Spurius's Bigmap that i love to bits i proceeded to work out how to add settlements, i was previously going to just do this for myself but i thought heck, other people might like it to pass some time before the real modders churn something out . Just a taster so far as it might not be available to download for a while. So far i am working on greece, asia minor and the balkans as Byzantium is "my area of intrest" so to speak, any one who wishes to offer me assistance in the way of important cites in the rest of the world is welcome to as i dont really have a clue . Well screenies for you(about 4-5 hours work, but once i cracked it it sped up a lot):

And yes i am aware Brusa only says Brus, its strange that when i added athens(not done at time of pics) it changed to Brusa and athens is now called athen lol must be some kind of bug, i will just stick a fake character on the end of my last town i suppose

Just press 'Enter' so the cursor is actually at the start of the line below your last town. The parser assumes the last character will be a carriage return.

isnt the map a bit to... geometrical? and it lacks the detail the original map has.

Yep, but is the old version - upcoming one looks a lot more natural:

will be available in a day or two at most.

more provinces on the big map will be great. That, and some of the unit changes that Lusted is working on will be quite an improvement over vanilla.

See if Repman will use it in his mod.
    This seems to be quite a racist comment. The Guals did a lot more than "wonder around pillaging";
It's not as if they were a bunch of dirty, stinking, fatherless Huns.

Dunno really. More provinces has to be balanced carefully, as not to do mistakes like in some RTW mods where Gaul became the economically damn important becouse of the added cities. Of course, during that time, the economically critical areas would have been elsewhere.

More cities, even historically significant cities, doesn't automatically create more historically accurate gameplay. Add wrong cities and you might have similar problems as in the RTW example.

Also, more cities = more boring siege battles, more micromanagement and so forth. Don't really see the point of adding cities unless the coverage of the map is extended.

Obviously, this was just my opinion. I'm sure there's lot of people who will enjoy added provinces nevertheless.

Personally I'd like more cities only if they are carefully balanced, in faction strength, historical relevance and in gameplay sense. Medieval : Total Siege War isn't that enjoyable.

    @Methoz, help you with what?

Also yes i thought it would be unbalanced like i said earlier i intended to make this mod for my personel use and was going to intigrate it into repmaps mod so the economy would be much more balanced. I've got a lot of time tonight to work on it, again if any one wants to give me some advice on european cities or point me to some sources that would be great.

Bah, dont listen to him .. the more cities/regions the better
Escpeicaly once a few more factions get added by the moders ... more regions will be needed for sure then.

Maybe you could add another province to the portuguese? that way they would have 2 historically accurated provinces, and Navarre could be given to the spanish or rebels.

Actually many provinces will be a Total siege game play which most people including me hate...i mean imagine have to conquer a city each turn, and absolutely no field battles, so only a few additions to each area would be good.

    this is true
+ to much cities screw up the economy also
However on the big map is space for some cities but not to much plz
You ask for steak, I bring you fish. You say that you think steak is better than fish. I say that fish is much more popular than steak so obviously it's better. You say that no matter how good the fish is it can't be better at being steak than the actual steak we used to serve. I say that's just your perception and you're entitled to it but you should accept that fish is the future and that's good. You begin to say something but I stab you in the eye with a fork and run into the kitchen.

I have a few concerns about this idea:

1)Due to the larger map size, wouldn't it take crusading armies ages to get to there destination? A similar problem could arise when the new world is discovered, as players may simply not bother visiting it if it takes too long to get there.

2)More settlements will mean that it will be easier to get money and therefore the whole game itself will be changed economically if you add more settlements. I remember in one version of RTR, that because there were so many settlements you never had to worry about monetary problems.

3)New resources will have to be added to make sure there are enough goods to trade for the merchants.

4)Try to balance where the settlements are placed. Do not just focus on one area, otherwise some factions will be in much better starting positions than others.

5)Try not to add so many settlements that the game essentially becomes a siege-fest. Siege battles are the most repetitive kind and are, in my opinion the most boring to defend.

6)You may need to increase the movement speed of diplomats to make sure that they can just as quickly get to neighbouring factions.

7)Mission times may have to be altered since it will take longer to get to that particular region.

I'm not saying this idea is rubbish, just that it will require a lot of thought to overcome the ideas I have listed above. For example, a possible solution to the economic problem would be to increase the cost of troops/buildings or decrease the amount generated from trade.

Well ... dont download the mods that add them then. Pretty simple.

But I DO like playing on maps with lots of cities, I dont blitz play and feel like I have to conquer a city every turn. "Most people" ..hardly. Give your own opinion for sure, but dont discourage people from modding just because how YOU like to play.

Hey yeh, thanks for the advice on thinking it through but yeh i had already thought about all that , i have nearly finished adding all the extra provinces in greece, the balkans and asia minor so me and a friend are gonna test the byzantines and turks see what its like and i will go from their really. But thanks for your criticisms guys as they were mostly constructive.

Thats how it is now in vanilla, especially in the Western part of the world

Have you actually played the Big Map? There is plenty of room to add more cities and still be less of a siege-war that plagues the vanilla version of the game.

Adding a couple in North africa, and around russia would be nice. Also maybe a few here and there. With the bigmap i really do feel adding more would be better.
