    Default Cavalry?

okay, so i fought some rebels with my general...just my general...and it went something like this...

the rebel army was composed of three spearmen...or sergeants, you know, the typical generic merc spearmen. formed like this:

    xxxxx
    xxxxx-xxxxx

    ggggg

i wanted to kill this general so i had him go strait for the second line at distance. basically, my general put his lances down and the entire force was decimated and routed.

it seems that this is a common occurence as i tried it several other times and the first line always gets pwned and the second line too...it's like the lances = death when put down.

Did you double-click or single-click? I have been finding lately, particularly with experienced units, that I don't have to go through the whole "double-click to gallop to start position, form up, then single click to charge" routine. All I have to do is double-click and they lower their lances and charge immediately.

My knights charge all the time...I think getting them in position first is a big part of it.

Just a couple hours ago I swung my Teutonic Knights around the side to charge the idle general but they drew the swords and started running in without charging so I pulled them back and reformed them quickly the charged again...worked perfectly.

Also seems like they don't like using their lances on moving enemies unless they are moving directly toward the knights.
