    Default The Black Ships Sail

In the 408th year of the Fourth Age of the Sun, the Emperor of Harad is the undisputed master of the South.

The Principalities of Harondor and Far Harad have been subdued and brought under his rule, and the wild men of Khand destroyed utterly. The shores of Gondor are awash with Haradrian troops, and the great white cities of Dol Amroth, Pelargir, and Minas Anor itself are firmly in the grip of the Empire.

From the jungled lands far beyond Umbar, trees are felled in great numbers. The slaves of the shipwrights are set to work to build a massive fleet. And from the distant corners of the South, marching feet and hooves stir dust to swirl beneath the vast yawning sky.

In the chambers of the palaces, emissaries and diplomats are likewise busy. Agents of the Shadow Cult are admitted into the Emperor's confidence. Pacts are made.

The preparations ready, three hosts assemble.

Three separate Corsair fleets will carry these soldiers of the South to do their lord's will.

Pirate raiders, swift horsemen, Palace Guard, giant Men of Far Harad, armored Cultic swordsmen and cavalry, even the feared Inquisition Enforcers - all take to the ships.

A fourth fleet follows, bearing reinforcements. For these three hosts are not the only armies the Emperor is sending north.

Too large for even the mightiest ships of the Corsairs to bear, the great Mumakil must march, cutting a crimson swath through the green lands of Rohan and leaving burned cities for the survivors to rebuild.

But it is not the thatched halls of the horse-lords that the Emperor wishes to conquer. His eyes are turned toward a greater prize.

In a few months' time, the quays of the fabled Grey Havens will fill with black sails from the South.

And the city of the Firstborn will burn.

Cool! Are Mumakil actually unable to sail?

Also, obligatory comments: dat Rohan, dat Tharbad, dat Rhun, dat Dorwinion.

I haven't actually tried putting them on ships, but I believe Mumakil lack the 'seafaring' attribute, which means they can't sail.

Rohan is definitely my biggest concern at the moment. While a previous northern expedition saw me sack Edoras, I had to withdraw (Mumakil can't leave cities during a sally battle, which makes things difficult). And Rohan is sending some good cav units against me, too! Hopefully I can bust through with most of the elephants at least.

As for those other factions, Rohan is beating Tharbad back. Dorwinion is either eliminated or a protectorate of Dale/Rhun (the minimap isn't really current). Dale is actually emerging as a big power in the North; they've taken some of Dorwinion's territories and are currently fighting Rhun.

I'm just glad I still have Far Harad as a buffer in the east!

That's Far Harad? I thought it was Khand, I didn't even notice. Did you manage to make the two principalities into protectorates?

Yes indeed I tried to make Khand a protectorate too, but accidentally starved out their entire ruling family, so the faction was destroyed. I gave their couple of territories to Far Harad.

They should be able to walk across the sea floor, like the experimentals from Supreme Commander

They can, I've had them glitch through both ways. It's difficult though, and not a reliable method.

I know - I love the native rosters myself. But I had to have at least some Black Numenoreans for an assault on Mithlond.

As the great fleet pass Dol Amroth, it meets only token resistance from the weakened Reunited Kingdom.

The Corsairs swat away the Dunedanic ships and continue on, adding reinforcements to lend strength to the host led by Obiajulu of Far Harad.

Having passed into Dunland (held now by the Rohirrim), this captain is one of the most well-travelled men in Middle-earth. In this green and soft land far from his desert home, even the stars are strange.

But supplies are dwindling. Foraging in the unfamiliar countryside will not suffice.

Scouts report a vulnerable settlement within reach.

The Mumakil make short work of the gates, and the hungry troops flood inside. The settlement is ravaged.

The fleet passes along the shores, and fresh Corsair troops make an unopposed landing.

The commanders meet. Dunfada has served its purpose; now fully supplied, Obiajulu draws his full army from the settlement and commits all that will burn to the flames. The armies must march together for protection against the hosts of the Rohirrim that shadow their steps.

The horse-lords have found their courage, it seems...

... but their riders and levies are little match for the combined armies of Harad.

The victory won, the commanders must decide on the path north. There are but two crossings into Eriador, and thence to Mithlond: the fortified bridge at Tharbad, or the ford at Swanfleet. The latter is less protected, but would oblige the Southron hosts to march far out of their way, in the shadow of the Misty Mountains. In order to meet with the ships, it is decided to attempt a crossing at Tharbad. Since the bridge and its surrounding cities and fortifications are held by the Rohirrim, such a passage will mean several sieges, and potentially costly assaults.

But time is of the essence. The fleets near their destination. Hugging the coast, the ships pass by dark forests crowned with distant hazy mountain peaks.

As the ships approach the Gulf of Lune, there is dissent among the men. Some are eager to press on to the Grey Havens at once. But many are weak from the long sea journey. The commanders order the ships to disembark at the nearest harbour - Harlond.

It is here that the Men of the South will first clash with the Elves.

Don't endless loading times just heighten the tension, though?

Good call. Time for another update!

As Obiajulu's forces approach Tharbad, a host of the Rohirrim is seen just outside the Southguard Fort. Battle is joined, in the hopes that the fort's garrison can also be destroyed and the fort taken without a costly assault.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The Rohirrim make a valiant charge, but their horses are tossed aside easily by the great Mumakil.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The foe withdraws, leaving the Haradrim in possession of the field. But the survivors retreat to the fort. Obiajulu settles in for a siege.

In the North, the Southron armies declare war.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Abaan will spearhead the attack. A Corsair from Umbar, he has much experience with such coastal raids: attack a lightly-held town, destroying any opposition in the field, and claim your prize without a siege.

His host comprises Corsairs and Swertings, Umbar Guard and the best cavalry in the fleet: Scarlet Shields and the dread Inquisition Enforcers. But the Elves prepare to defend their lands with formidable Lindon Guards.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Abaan moves to the higher ground. The larger part of the Elven resistance is deployed ahead, beyond the trees. The reinforcing garrison approaches from farther downhill.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Abaan orders the right wing of his cavalry forward, hoping to scatter the Elven archers.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Though weakened, the Elven Bows do not flee. As the Elven infantry marches to engage, the riders are forced to withdraw. Abaan throws his infantry forward into a chaotic melee. The Elven Retainers have sped tirelessly up the hill; giant Men of Far Harad rush to meet them.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Beneath the shade of the trees, the elite Umbar Guard clash with the deadly Elves of Lindon.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The Elves take losses, but too few - and the host of Harad is cut to pieces. With most of his infantry in flight, Abaan throws himself and his remaining cavalry into the fray.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The charge is stopped short by the wall of Elven polearms. Abaan withdraws from the field.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Of this proud host of Harad, only one-eighth returns to the ships. Two untested armies remain, to try another assault. But this first skirmish has taught Abaan and the other commanders to be wary of these strange folk. Future battles must be fought with more care. And now, the men of the fleet look anxiously for news from the south - for Obiajulu and the fearsome Mumakil that march in his train. If they cannot force an overland passage to Mithlond, the men fear they will be unable to take the city itself.

The men of the expedition have more to fear, however, than Elvish wights. The displeasure of the Emperor is just as dangerous - especially now that he has made allegiance with a shadowy new figure who desires nothing less than the utter ruin of the Firstborn:

C'mon, Webba - your sig says no, but your avatar says yes!

I'm somewhat alarmed at the possibility that this entire expedition will end in defeat and disgrace. I've had some success against the Elves since the above events, but I'm honestly worried!
