The shame! If it makes you feel any better, Edward Bruce (Scottish king Robert the Bruce's younger brother), technically proclaimed the High King of Ireland, didn't do so well with his invasion of Ireland, either. He was eventually killed in battle. Just be glad that your Scottish prince got to run back to Scotland. Fun fact: I have personally visited the Anglo-Norman Carrickfergus Castle in Northern Ireland (not far from Belfast), which was put under siege for like a year while the Scots held the surrounding town. Ireland is a tough nut to crack.

They are late 11th - early 12th century.

They are between tiers 2 and 3 (or at least that's more likely as far as I know).
In tier 4 you see the introduction of heraldic surcoat which (IMS) historically happen in the second half (maybe fourth quarter) of the 12th century.
