    Default Age of Discovery

Between the 15th and 17th century, Europe began to explore the unknown and powerful exotic entities around the world flourished. This is the perfect setting for a map I am dying to make- one which covers the globe in it's entirety.

I am just beginning to learn map-making and this is what I've decided to set my sights on. I was going to wait until I had something to show, but can't contain my eagerness >< The focus should be on the colonial powers of Europe, but with major factions of other areas also represented. With only 30 slots, this will leave a lot of the planet in the hands of 'rebel' or independant nations.

Here's the factions I were thinking of. This is entirely conceptual and open to suggestions, not having undergone much uin the way of research.

    Americas:
    Aztecs
    Incas
    Huron
    Iroquois

    Africa:
    Ethiopia
    Malindi
    Songhai
    Morroco
    Zimbabwe

    Asia:
    Mongolia
    China
    Japan
    Korea
    Ayuthatta (Thai)
Mataram (Java and other parts of Indonesia)
    Vijanayagara (Southern India)
Mughal Empire (emerging faction, spread from Afghanistan into most of Indian subcontinent during 1500s)
    Safavid Empire (Persia)
Khazak Khanate (Roughly modern day Kazakhstan)

    Colonial Europe:
    Spain
    Portugal
    France
    England
    Holland
    Denmark
    Russia
    Ottoman Empire

Other European countries which may be good to include (Not sure about Sweden):
    Holy Roman Empire
    Papal States
    Sweden

This large variety of cultures will require much research and original artwork, but will provide the player with a rich game experience where every faction should feel completely different.

If you are interested in starting up this sort of project (I don't necassarily want to be Team leader btw, so that position is open) then please post Any thoughts at all are much appreciated.

sounds good man, only if you want the world in its entirety, you should start looking into what local peoples were around. For example: In the Americas, there were many tribes of Natives.

But hey, good luck on it.

I'll download it if you make it.

Yeh I know, I have a fairly good idea about what cultures were present at that time, and also Europa Universalis II (which is closest game to this mod) has done most of the research needed already

But will need a good team, no way I can do this by myself. Hint. Hint.

Sorry wasn't really hinting at you in particular Ameribriton, but I may just take you up on your offer Do you think the faction line-up is valid for this period?

Africa, Asia, and Colonial Europe I wouldn't know to much about. But for the Americas, I could go on for hours.

The Huron, Iroquois, Aztec and Inca, too few tribes. In the New England region, the Abnaki were there, and within New Hampshire, Northern Massachusetts, Vermont, and parts of Eastern Maine. I almost certain that the Settlers at Plymouth ran into the Abnaki. The Plains Natives were around during this time, although they did not posses firearms, and fought with the spear, bow, slings, and clubs. If you could progress the mod, to say around the late 1700s to late 1800s, ending at around 1885, the United States could be a spawning faction (like the Mongols) at around 1776 and push the British out. That would leave room for the alot more TOTAL WAR and some scalping issues. But before I go too of topic, the Americas need more factions. All that room for expansion and nothing but rebels to claim it? Caribbean (SP?) factions could emerge too. Like the Dominicans and Haitians rising up over the Spanish and the French in revolt. With room for 30 Factions, this game could progress up to the Spanish American War.

Well the focus of the mod is the Age of Discovery, which means it will start in mid-late 1400s and end sometime in the late 1600s.

The problem with the Americas is that, apart from the Aztecs, Incas and maybe Zapotecs, there weren't really any 'empires'. I added Iroquois and Huron because, while they were more of a people than a faction, they did have some sort of cohesion. They also traded with Europeans and made various alliances and pacts. But the main reason they are there at present is like you said, that's an awful lot of grey 'rebel' area. Also, as most of these tribes didn't massively expand, an independant (rebel) province should suit them fine. Africa has few factions as it is, and I feel the Asian factions I've selected are also far more 'nation-like' than any of the Native American tribes.

I am perhaps willing to substitute Sweden with another one though (I was thinking Cherokee), but not sure as it would help keep Denmark in line... and am open to changes with Iroquois and Huron. So what three North American tribes, in order of importance, would you include?

I think he means create a map first. An empty map, with no empires, factions, nothing. Then from there take a look at the size and see what you can do for factions then.

Huron, Iroquois, Abnaki, Cherokee, and Seminole would be a start.

Oh by the way if you haven't thought of it yet, in South Africa, Zululand. The Zulus have been around for ages.
