Any bass players here?

    Default Any bass players here?

Two weeks ago I took up the bass guitar. Its a wonderful instrument, far more power than the normal guitar, plus they are actually a decent size as well, when I pick up my strat I feel like "Wow, its like its a 3/4 size"

So, any other bass players here? What kind of Bass do you have?

I have zero basses and zero equipment, they are all my dads. I just use what ever bass I feel like, and how now commandeered a custom made Pangborn.

I have a rogue Violin Bass, but I don't use it that often and it was a gift for me a while back. I can play bass, but not that good, and it definetly isn't the instrument of choice for me.

I do admit though, I admire some of those bassists that when you hear them play, something just mezmerises you.

I think we have a couple on the forum, but not nearly as the guitarists

Especially when they have amazing voices (ie Jack "the ****ing Man" Bruce)

And John Paul Jones, he was a good bassist.

Pretty much this whole list, actually

Funny that, I've just become a Bass guitarist (like father like son, sort of thing)
I've been playing guitar for years, but i've joined a new band to play bass, and i'm really enjoying it so far. Just got myself a new Boss Bass distortion box, and i'm going to try out on the Ampeg at the rehearsal studio for the first time tonight..

which reminds me, i need to get moving to actually make it to practice!

Just acoustic for me. Chicks dig acoustic way more, as long as you don't call it classical.

At the moment I'm literally just learning songs by ear or by tab, because I've really had to concentrate on the bands set list as we have a few gigs lined up very soon, so I'm not worrying too much about technique or theory.

Switching from Guitar to bass is relatively simple in theory, but there is a lot more to playing bass than I realised whilst i was playing guitar, the most obvious being that its actually a lot more physically demanding to play.
I'm trying to "model" my playing style on a cross between Geezer Butler from Black Sabbath, Justin Chancellor from Tool and Rex Brown from Pantera, but my main problem so far is getting a half decent sound out of the Bass i'm using (the band has a bloody great big Ampeg bass stack, so it can only be the actual bass guitar thats contributing to the flat sound.)

I wouldnt want to skimp on technique, often a very simple riff played with good technique and timing is far better than a really complicated one without either of the former.

I already have good enough technique from playing guitar to be able to play bass perfectly well.
Of course, mastering the Bass and becoming an actual bass player will take a bit more time, and eventually i'd like to learn to play without a pick, and maybe slap style.

    Buy a new bass then.
Good idea, i'll just go and get that spare £600 I have knocking about in my spare change jar!!

Or, perhaps you could lend me the money?

I'm thinking of getting a Bass in the not too distant future - maybe around my Birthday in February. Not that I'm bored of my guitar or anything, I just feel like experimenting!

No idea what bass to get mind

A Fender Precision bass is a good intermediate bass.

I actually like bass more than guitar. I just know that I am too lazy to learn how to play as well as I want to.

I'm actually a drummer, but I plan on starting to play bass next year (cannot right now for very good reasons).

Come Christmas, I will have been playing bass for three whole years. Wow... since I was 11. I have been in 4 bands over the years, 2 major ones, one just starting up... need a drummer though.
As for my instrument, I have a Gould Jazz Bass (cream). Kind of like a Fender, but much, much heavier...

I've been playing bass for about a year and a half or so. I prefer to play with my fingers, like the sound better and I just can't play very well with a pick.
    I got a Washburn Taurus T14. It's a decent bass and i like it's sound.

I play the upright bass, I think it sounds better than the bass guitar.

Yeah, but how many rock bands use the upright/double bass?
