    Default Battering Rams...Really?

    Has it ever worked?For anyone?
Most of the time, the very moment the ram reaches the gate house it is instantly burnt down by boiling oil without getting a single swing in and conviently sealing the gate for the rest of the battle

Its frankly absurd at the moment that your only option in the early game is to go up the ladder and gets instantly surrounded from all sides. This is espacially an issue because its DEI and you can't hack through the the enemy like vanilla and the flanking morale penalties are significant.

I know this is a vanilla issues, but could a mod ever resolve this? Can a ram be made immune to boiling oil?

Why? Then it would just be too easy.

Also, how did you even come to the conclusion that making battering rams not instantly burn down make the siege battles 'too easy'?

He was referring to your suggestion of making battering rams immune to boiling oil, which is idiotic, I don't recall anybody of late who has come here complaining about how hard it is to gain entrance to a city.
I apologize if the word idiotic offends you, but I really don't like the way you replied to FlasHeart07, the guy spends a lot of time on these forums helping people and even more trying to make you people happy modding this game, so please show a bit of respect.

I destroyed gates with rams many times, hell, even my screenshot of it won weekly award for best screenshot.

But I can look further into it although boiling oil is just horrible thing to work on.

You suggested that rams should be made immune to boiling oil. That I find to make the game too easy. Its okay to come with suggestions but immunity is never the answer. Nerfing boiling oil or increasing the HP og rams is ideas that would somewhat solve the problem but not make the game too easy. I asked why you would give them immunity.

I gained entry into a city last night with a battering ram. Well, I had to send my swordsmen in to attack the hoplites after the gate broke. I absolutely hate performing siege battles. My armies can take large casualties. This is very realistic and maybe should be harder.

Try using towers and ladders at the same gate as the ram. Something will burn, maybe two, but something will get there. Siege for a few turns. Place a support army in siege mode and your better army behind in raiding mode. Patience. They are a pain. But if anything, it should be harder. Taking walled cities was no walk in the park.

There is no issue it works fine for me and it's the first I've seen of anyone complaining about it.

Yeah never had a problem here either.

Except when people get snippy at Forum regulars who spend hours away from their friends and family modding a game solely for the uncompensated enjoyment of strangers. That I have a problem with.

Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever had a ram catch fire...

Ok i admit that you shouldn't be able to get through gates casualty free, but I agree that it is nigh IMPOSSIBLE to storm gates with oil. Sent in THREE legionary units all dead and shattered

We are all considered ourselves better than the AI and yet i have never seen AI attack my gate before.

The solution is simply ignore the gate

or you can simply put your army on fort mode just outside the settlement if theres a enemy army present. The AI will send the army and the garrison at you and u can wipe it out on the battle map, allowing for a auto resolve of the walled settlement. if your having trouble against a garrison without another army in the settlement. i dont know what to say. i can normally take a normal city garrison with just the ladders.

Guys, there is no reason to start making personal jabs, from either side.

Right now rams are kind of a novelty because it is simply more effective to use artillery to break walls or to storm the walls via ladder.

I do wish sieging was more like Rome 1, the huge medieval castle walls may have been a historical, but the sieges were much more entertaining.

And AI would run away from battle if it knew it would not win it or if their siege engines were burn down or they only had cavalry left.

The ram should be and is the riskiest move on the part of the besieger.

At least with ladders you can attack across a broad area.

Siege towers are the way forward, with ladders sent in once the enemy is occupied. I wouldnt rely on a ram.

Pin down defenders with area attack missile fire, roll up siege towers with ladders for support. I usually don't even build a ram. Take the gatehouse, raises your flag and just March on in while the AI regroups in the city center.
