I have heard something strange these days. Every unit who has militia somewhere in its name has free army upkeeps? I didn't know that is it true? Or do other units also have free upkeeps ?

The size of your city determines the amount of free upkeep militia units you have (which is specified by wall upgrades). Castles do not have free upkeep militia. I think the maximum is 5 free upkeep militia units with the largest wall/city. You can only benefit from this when the militia units are garrisoned. Once you take them out on a march, you pay.

Would you mind listing the max number of militia for each wall size please? I don't recall seeing it in the manual or strategy guide, and it would be helpful indeed to know.

You see it at the description of the city wall upgrade
Maximum is 6 for a metropolis

You'd have to wait 8 hours for me to do so as I'm at work.
Just look at the building descriptions in the game. If you want to see a breakdown, pull up the ingame tech tree/database, right click on the building and it will show you the details.

So this isn't for all units only for militia? If my other units are garrisoned i still have to pay?

On high level castles if you upgrade the Jousting Grounds you will get free upkeep on 1 unit, however I haven't been able to figure out if it works or not yet.(The Unit card didn't change color when you move it into the castle)
